So lately, I've been hearing some faint bleating about offering "resistance" to the sadistic depredations of the knuckle-dragging thugs Trump has sent out to enforce the orders emerging from his manbaby tantrums. To which I say "WELCOME!" and think "MAN, are you ever late to the party!"
Because our brave boys in blue didn't just turn Nazi overnight. OHHH no, this has been a long time building up. Here's an article from Bob Herbert, New York Times columnist, from almost twenty years ago:

In it, he asks: "I wondered then, and I still wonder, why so many seemingly decent people in law enforcement are willing to participate in the evil practice of sending people to prison (or worse) who are demonstrably innocent of the charges against them"
To which Fred Woodworth of THE MATCH! fame replies:
"(Police and prosecutors) do, in fact, realize what's right and wrong, and that they consciously try to inflict harm when they think they can get away with it, because they like it. To a great but unrecognized degree, jobs as police or prosecutors have been filled, we believe, by self-controlled psychotics who have chosen to adopt this relatively risk-free lifestyle as a means for carrying out their predations.
.....Here we reach the heart of the matter: cruelty. Most real crimes are motivated mainly by self-interest (gain, or profit), with only a tiny admixture of cruelty. For example, a professional burglar's motivations are essentially 100% self-interest. So are those of an ordinary thief.
....Cruelty begins to play a bigger role, though, in crimes like murder: but even here it seems probable that most instances arise from some momentary circumstance (for example being detected during the commission of another crime). The element of cruelty must make up a still-greater proportion of rape, and in the serial killer plain cruelty must become the overwhelmingly dominant motivation, with self-interest or profit having a role of about zero.

....Looked at through the glass of this brief analysis, police or prosecutor abuse is in the same class exactly as serial killing. The brutal policeman who insults, wantonly arrests, kills your dog when it jumps out of your car wagging it's tail, etc., gets paid exactly the same sum at week's end whether he's cruel or not. So his cruelty is just for his own fun.
The prosecutor who gets a man sentenced to 50 years, or to death, when in fact he's fully cognizant of exculpatory evidence, draws not one single nickel more for having done so. These non-self-interest crimes, then, are the particularly heinous ones. The word "evil" keeps recurring to mind as we think about them. The same word evidently occurred to columnist Bob Herbert as he puzzled the conundrum of how seemingly decent men could behave as they do.

It's sheer cruelty, Bob. It's a legacy of our animal ancestry, probably going back to the reptilian age. Civilization and moral codes have pushed it into a dark corner of secrecy and hidden motives cloaked by suave justifications of "Law" and "public interest" and so on.
But at base, it's purely the total evil of wanting to inflict pain. The greatest horror of authoritarian society, perhaps, is that it provides the perfect cover for these maniacs; and the longer a society of this type continues, the more positions within its official ranks will be filled by inhuman monsters."

Geddit? The masked thugs jumping out of unmarked vans and "disappearing" people are not a shocking new twist. Such evil, such contempt for law and basic human decency, is how things have been for a long time. But now the mask covering the sheer ugliness of the monster we call Government has started to slip a little. You're seeing a sliver of the reality.
So if you believe the damage of the Trump Tantrum can be fixed by replacing a few politicians and tweaking a few official policies once he's out of office, I must sadly inform you that you are wrong. Genuine liberation takes grueling hard work. De-Nazifying America is gonna be a lot harder than de-Nazifying Germany, after the war. For one thing, most of Germany's postwar Nazis had been disarmed.
This is not to say that Resistance is futile. Far from it! It's our only hope, the light in the darkness. You gotta start somewhere, right? Just don't expect it to be easy, for the next, oh, 20 or 30 years.
