It's Kamikazetime for Nezumi Monogatari! Review #8
3 months ago
I love kemono in anime, no matter if they only show up a bit or the anime is all about them. But, unfortunately, there were many of them that to this day never got a proper translation, or the subs stopped before finishing the anime for some reason, which happened, for example, with Wan Wan Celeb Soreyuke! Tetsunoshin. And since they don't have translations, such anime or movies end up becoming underground as fuck and forgotten.
That was the case with the movie we're talking about this time. Nezumi Monogatari - George to Gerald no Bouken, also known as Mouse Story: The Adventures of George and Gerald, was released on December 22, 2007, but was only subtitled many years later. Despite that being the case, it was a movie on my radar for years, one that I had always hoped would be subtitled one day. And now...it is~
So, what is the movie about? As translated from the Japanese wiki: "Nezumi Monogatari: George and Gerald’s Adventure is based on a picture book titled 'Taisetsu na Nakamatachi: Nezumi Monogatari' (Precious Friends: Mouse Story), written by Shintaro Tsuji, the founder of Sanrio. The book is part of Sanrio’s collection of children’s stories, which often emphasize themes of friendship, kindness, and perseverance. The movie adapts and expands on this story, turning it into a full-fledged adventure about two mice competing to become the leader of their community."
It's not every day that we get a movie based on a book written by someone like the founder of Sanrio.
You know Sanrio, right? The company that deals with and sells products based on a lot of cute and mascot-like characters! The most famous of those is Hello Kitty.
This makes me wonder what the other stories are in that picture book. Would love to check it out and compare what's in there with the movie, but unfortunately, I couldn't find scans of it online. If you happen to find some, please let me know~
While the movie has a lot, and I mean, a LOT of characters, only a few of them are indeed real characters. Will talk about this later, but for now, let's first talk about our "real" characters!
- George: The MC of our movie. According to Hanna, he treats his friends kindly, but he's hasty and scatterbrained. And she's right, haha. He's quite cute and naive and is a perfect contrast to his best friend, Gerald. So much so that the movie hints he always wondered about what the world outside is like, which is something Gerald sees as a flaw.
https://imgbox.com/g/CSNsfcbFTa
- Gerald - Considered by Hanna to be strong and reliable, but only boasts about himself. He's George's best friend, and he's... let's just say more feisty than George. If you're into bad boys, then he's the bad boy of the movie, though more in the sense that he isn't as nice as George. He isn't evil or anything xP.
https://imgbox.com/g/VBQzg0dGnE
- Hanna - A very kind mouse girl who works as the "nurse" of their group and is always taking care of the Elder. She has a crush on George, but it's not known if he feels the same. Probably not, given how George acts toward Marie Lu...poor Hanna. https://imgbox.com/g/tTSm1f7Ktr
- Marie Lu: Annoying and narcissistic but also cute mouse girl who kinda forces herself into the adventure just because "it sounded so fun". As expected of this kind of character, she's only there to create trouble for our heroes. If she wasn't cute, I wonder if our heroes would always let her get away with the stupid shit that bitch does.
https://imgbox.com/g/2V9BnpRlh1
- Chamberlain - Gerald's friend. He must be his second-best friend since he's the one that Gerald chose to go with him on this adventure as his "attendant". Based on a scene at the start of the movie, he has a naughty side, so it makes sense that he would be Gerald's friend.
https://imgbox.com/g/aL6UQRGVMP
- Walter - George's friend, same thing I said about Chamberlain, but he's George's attendant. Unlike Chamberlain, he's a coward. Sadly, we don't see that much of those two and will talk more about this in spoilers. https://imgbox.com/g/UzFzIgSF9P
- Raon - The Cat, who only shows up at the start of the movie, makes me wonder if he even exists in the picture book. He doesn't even talk or anything; he acts like a normal feral cat.
https://imgbox.com/g/uzKWA36wvq
- Norma - Owl that lives in the forest near their home. Helps them a bit, including by introducing them to Alex.
- Alex - A mysterious old mouse that lives in the forest near their home and helps our heroes.
https://imgbox.com/g/UR0NJlA6Q8
- Leopold - The Elder is getting too old for this shi, so he has to choose between George and Gerald to take over as their leader. And the way he did it is the reason why the movie exists!
https://imgbox.com/g/tTSm1f7Ktr
The movie begins by introducing most of our characters, and then Leopold has trouble deciding between George and Gerald to take over as the leader. So he decided that whoever captured the so-called "Dragon of Light" in the Moon Valley would become the new leader. The Elder doesn't explain exactly what this dragon is, all he does is allow each of the two mice to let an "attendant" accompany them and give them half of a map that has the area they live in, but is missing the Moon Valley area, and they leave on their little journey by hitching a ride on a truck. We presume that the truck belongs to the owner of the mansion they live in, so we guess they were lucky he was going that way on that day?
I'm not going to talk about the plot in detail more than that aside from my input in the spoiler section, since it's a short movie. Only 52 minutes long, so anybody can watch it quite easily.
The short length of the movie would be enough to recommend it to most people! But that aside, if you like anime with cute characters like the ones from Hamtaro or Gamba no Bouken, for example, then I have no doubt you will love this movie. It's not common even today to have a movie about small, cute characters like those guys. The last time I saw a movie like this was the "newest" movie of Gamba no Bouken.
Heck, the animation of the movie alone is enough of a reason for any anime fan to want to check this out. It's VERY good! I couldn't believe this movie wasn't from 2024 or something. And so many fun and different expressions for the characters! The last time I saw an anime with expressions so good like this was from Digimon Ghost Game!
Those are enough reasons to justify anyone checking this movie out, because I can't say the plot is one
of them xD. I will elaborate more on this in the spoiler section, but at the end of the day, this is a kid's movie, so they didn't work very hard in the plot itself, as stuff as say Night of the Galactic Railroad. It is quite a simple plot, even if it has some...problems along the way, especially toward the end, though maybe that was me not liking it and still wanting more. Seriously, sometimes the movie feels like a pilot for a series. A real shame that it never became a full anime series if that's the case.
Now that’s subbed, it’s very easy to find the movie, heck, it’s even uploaded on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/bth7CYOWN1Q.
So I will talk about some stuff about the plot and my opinion on it that will have spoilers. If you want to avoid spoilers and want to see what the movie offers for furries, which is the main point of my review, then please scroll down to the “KEMONO SCALE JUDGEMENT” section!
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE AND THE ENDING
- The main issue with the plot of the movie is also its biggest strength: the movie is too short. It's very hard to make a movie with a good plot in only 52 minutes, and Nezumi Monogatari isn't a movie that managed to do that. It's an okay plot at best. So, at the end of the day, you will watch this for the gorgeous animation and the great interactions between the characters.
- The short length of the movie also means we won't see that many of those interactions, though. What's there it's good, but really, we needed more to give the movie more staying power. I don't know if they were following the plot of the picture book that closely or something, but there is a lot we could have seen to add more to the movie. For example...more of Chamberlain and Walter. Maybe see how George and Gerald became friends. Or do something with Hanna's crush on George, since that didn't go anywhere and could even be cut from the movie entirely. But as it is, the movie feels like it ends when it should be getting to the "middle" of the journey or something. Shame, but it is what it is.
- Maybe it's also because of the short length of the movie, we only really have one action scene, which is the fight against the random weasel. This is something else that feels they could have expanded on more to add more fuel to the movie, since, from what Alex said, he already met that weasel before. Compared to the rest of the movie, this scene stands out, given it's the only sort of action scene in the movie, but I wonder if it was something they added. And if so, if they did it because they felt inspired by Gamba no Bouken, since this is exactly the sort of stuff you would see in that anime! xD As it is, I'm not sure if it belongs here, though. I think more drama or more interactions between the characters would have been better and fit more with the movie.
- If there is one thing in the movie's plot that is quite a mess and shouldn't be at all is the whole thing between Alex and Leopold. We don't know about their past or anything, only that they were "friendly rivals" that heard of the legend of the Dragon of Light (what legend exactly? They never explained) and just got a random map to travel to the Moon Valley because...that was a thing that they liked to do? George and Gerald had a reason to make that journey, but those guys didn't. We don't know their past, where they came from...and yet this Dragon of Light thing was enough to make Alex so upset he abandoned Leopold, even taking half of the map with him. It's not like they were competing for a specific reason here; there were no stakes like there are with George and Gerald, as the one who wins that competition would become the new Elder.
And yet, this little mess was enough to make Alex never talk to Leopold again, it seems, since he's now a hermit living in the woods that happened to be close to the manor that Leopold was living in anyway. And yet they never met again until they were old lol? Were those guys really that much friends to begin with? I get what they were going for, but since those two had different circumstances compared to what George and Gerald are going through, it really isn't the same thing at the end. And that fight those two had wasn't such a big deal since by the end they made up so easily despite not seeing each other for years after what happened lol.
- It's even weirder when they had that fight because of something the movie never explained what it is. We don't know even if it exists or when our characters met it they are high as fuck or whatever xD. And besides, when we find out by the end of the movie that Leopold himself never saw it, so forget about having captured it, what was his plan for asking the two mice to capture it? This only really makes sense if he knew they were failing to do what he failed to do back then, but he hoped they would bond during their journey and want to work together as the leader by the end of it. And there was no way that he knew that was going to happen by the end of it, when that same journey ruined his relationship with Alex.
- That was the worst part of the movie imo. So by the end of it, George and Gerald decide to both become the leaders together, which is just the easy way out and almost makes the whole movie feel like a waste of time. They were already good friends, to begin with. If that was an option, why did none of them suggest it from the beginning or something lol. It would make way more sense than Leopold asking them to go on this journey that just risked their friendship being ruined, as it's what happened between him and Alex, only for something that they could have just suggested from the start, to begin with. I do wonder if this makes more sense in the picture book. Maybe the idea was to teach the kids to work together or something, but as the plot goes, it doesn't really make sense when you think about it.
KEMONO SCALE JUDGEMENT
Now that we put that out of the way...it's KAMIKAZETIME!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqNDvkSyeCM
Aside from the gorgeous animation, there was one other thing that
caught my attention when I first heard about this movie. And that was the design of the characters!
All of the characters have amazing, cute designs. And I don't mean only the main cast. Take a look at some of the "NPCs":
https://imgbox.com/g/gTOvWokzIe
https://ibb.co/JWY3b7X1
https://ibb.co/MyrCQ2DD
See? 90% of them are so good and detailed that they could either have joined the main cast or been part of the "extended" main cast, as say most of the hamsters of Hamtaro. One of my favorites is the mouse with that eye patch on! And yes, maybe I have a thing for furries with eye patches xP.
I dare say those designs are just as good as the Hamtaro ones, if not better, though certainly better than the guys from Gamba no Bouken. But then again, I think the guys in that anime had that rough-looking design to reflect the harsh world they live in.
The designs alone are so good they're wasted in this movie, as only the main cast are real characters that talk and such. It's part of why I think maybe this movie was technically a pilot, and we would have seen those other mice in a series later. If that's the case, it's a big shame that it never happened.
It is curious that aside from them, we see a cat, an owl, and a weasel, and that's it, but only the owl talks and acts as a real character and not a normal animal. It's a bit weird and similar to what happens in Gamba no Bouken as well, where some animals act and behave like normal animals, and others act like "anthros".
Not that it's a problem, though. The focus is still more on the mice than on anyone else. And yes, that is a world that has humans. Not only do our heroes live in a big manor in the woods, but we briefly see one man who we presume is the owner of it. But that's the only time we ever see a human in the entire movie. The focus is on our main cast, and all of them are furry!
It's not a perfect movie, but honestly, the short length of it, the gorgeous design, and the great animation are enough of a reason to recommend it for any furries and even more if you like cute rodents. Maybe the ending isn't perfect for the reasons I talked about in the spoiler section, but it's not so bad that it ruins the whole thing or something.
Also, as a side note, given that not only do we see cubs in the movie, but the characters don't behave like cubs at all, I think that while cute and small as mice are, they aren't cubs. Just like the guys from Gamba no Bouken and Hamtaro, heh. And given the short time those guys are on the screen, as this is a short movie, they sure are very charismatic! It would be better if they focused more on other characters too, since only George and Gerald are focused on most of the time, but that's part of the movie being quite small to begin with. What we end up with, though it's still a good anime movie! And even more for fans of furry stuff!
So, for those reasons, Nezumi Monogatari: George to Gerald no Bouken deserves to be the first to get a...*turns around and points dramatically at the movie* A FIVE OUT OF FIVE OF LOF IN THE KAMIKAZE SCALE!!!
Not only do we barely have a human in the movie, but the characters are way better than most furry out there and cuter than needed to get a high score on the scale. Plus, the entire movie is about them (well...two of them), even if it has a short length and the ending isn't anything special. This is the sort of movie you will watch for the characters and not the plot, anyway.
The best furry character this time is...I think it's a tie between George and Gerald! So hard to choose between one since both are so good, though for different reasons!
The "kemono in the refrigerator" this time is...maybe we can consider all the characters aside from the main cast to be a bit wasted since they're all just NPCs despite their wonderful design? xP
Aaaand that’s it for this one! Hope you guys enjoyed reading this review. Please don't hesitate to leave your comments and opinions about it, especially if you happen to have watched it already, or maybe wanna check it out thanks to this review xD. I want to leave those journals as a place where people can discuss the respective things being reviewed here!
