-when the TFing person is trying to hide that they're TFing they're just like nah man i just got a haircut its cool its fine these long ears? dont know what you're talking about
-when the TFed person is teased for what they were TFed into
-when a person is TFed as a punishment

You're destroyed and rebuilt through all your nightmares coming true and passing beyond them, proper magic.
I AM ALSO a fan of more bodyhorror transformations! My friend Phantastus wrote a really good one once of a man slowly turning into a dog and his teeth fell out in the sink!!
As for me, I like a mix. Like I do have one character in my Zahaho setting who turned himself into a dragon permanently but most of my stories where TF happens, it's usually just a temporary thing or an ability they have.
I did have an idea for a story where a person gets turned into some kind of hoofed animal and how their life changes and how they have a house built specifically to adapt to their unique needs. A million BILLION years ago I read a MLP fanfic (this was G1) that described a human visiting ponyland and the way it described how all the furniture and tools were made specifically to be used by the ponies with their mouths and hooves and stuff just fascinated me.
in my zahaho headworld two of the main sentient races are sphinxes (i'm gonna make them more unique and come up with something else to call them eventually) and centaurs (called hrasae) and I had the idea of what if sphinx furniture was like... cat towers and stuff since cats love being up high
Like who are you when you're unmoored from the most fundamental parts of yourself?
But also it's the perfect dream and power fantasy, the ultimate form of self actualization. Turn yourself into the exact "you" you want to be.
And so it was the best mechanism of story telling, because what would you be if you could be anything?
I love it when characters get what they always wanted but they've never confronted the reality of it and they're more terrified of being disappointed by it than anything, but they still like it.
Like when I first bought a motorcycle I'd been terrified it would awful, that I'd be terrified and hate it after decades of wanting a motorcycle. And then minute one I was like "this is the greatest thing ever, I never want to drive a car ever again!"
That's TF to me, turning into a slobbering, accursed monster and realizing, to your immense joy and unfathomable horror, "Oh no, this is the best thing ever and everyone will hate me for loving it! I'm cursed to never be normal and I love it!"
But then we see a thousand stories about not accepting the world as it is, getting what you wish for, and regretting it all.
I always wondered, if I could remove that part how much of me is actually me? How much is just my disorder?
If I could turn into another thing would that even be me in the body? Would I even care, or would I be glad that man was now dead?
Standing up out of my own corpse, bloody and grinning knives, mad and happy.
- Voluntarily TFing into their significant other's species to be closer to them, strengthen their bond, become biologically able to have children, and so on
- Joining a tribe, pack, or some other tight-knit society by literally becoming one of them
- Switching sides in a conflict between two species as a result of TFing into the opposing species (really want to see the mental shift in detail here)
- "Earning" a species TF by winning a powerful being's favor (the dragon covenant from Dark Souls, for example)
- For werewolf-type TFs, feeling the "animal side" within oneself and getting to know it better
coping with a new form
mind alteration and competing instincts
either clothes too small now or clothes way too big (its funny/fun)
oh yeah the curse/punishment angle is peak
