Super Sentai: Of Suits and Styles.
How be ye, all me weirdos.
So yeah, as quickly as it was just incredulously Thanos'd out of existence, one of my favorite YouTube channels 'Trouble Busters' has made a triumphant return like nothing happened. Who got all the Infinity Stones? With a name like 'Trouble Busters', you'd think they'd be some kinda Sentai group. And they kinda are in a way. Which is precisely what I'm a-gonna talk about here.
50 years of Super Sentai, and that's 50 years worth of cool stuff to talk about. The Ranger characters themselves? No, I don't wanna overload this journal, an I know I can be a windbag at times. So I'm just gonna talk about their suits, cuz that's what draws people in whenever Sentai is mentioned, right? ^^ Just giving my thoughts about the suits of the core team and ranking them on a 1 to 5 score. When I say 'core team' I mean I'm not gonna cover the '6th Rangers'. That'll be another journal. I will also do the Super Modes in another journal.
Himitsu Sentai Goranger: There's just always something about these suits from 1975 I just can't help but fall in love with. Simplistic, given the era they aired in, but still really hold up well 50 years later. But, just cuz it's original, doesn't mean it's automatically good. Only gripe I have is why Blue, Yellow and Green have black boots/gloves, while Red and Pink have white? That's just a nitpick. And if you checkout the "Himitsu Sentai Goranger: The Classic Manga collection' book that came out a few years ago, you'll notice the chevrons they have on the suits are silver, and Midoranger has white gloves. I don't wanna sound biased with nostalgia, but cuz of their snazzy look, I rank these suits a solid 5 out of 5... and in the five of them together! XD
J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai: For suits that're a playing card motif, they're pretty cool for what they are. But they don't hit AS home for me as the Goranger suits. So, they get a 4 out of 5.
Battle Fever J: I've had a love/hate relationship with these suits back in the day when I first learned about the Pre-Zyuranger stuffs. For a while, I thought these suits where the worst I've ever seen, even by 70s standards. Those thoughts have changed, though they are still a wee bit weird. But they did something right when they've solidified Super Sentai with the first ever giant robot. So for these suits, a good 4 out of 5. ^^
Denshi Sentai Denziman: Nifty design for the most part, but I ain't gonna lie, those suits do look itchy as hell. XD A gripe I have lies with DenziPink; the rest of her suit looks like a faded out pink compounding her helmet color. So these suits get a 3.5 out of 5
Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan: I just love the uniformity of these suits. Again, simple, but they nailed the look. A 5 out of 5 for these suits.
Dai Sentai Goggle-V: Simple, yet again, but the uniformity is there. The helmets take a minute to get use to. So for that, it's a 3.5 out of 5 for these suits.
Kagaku Sentai Dynaman: Ehh... I don't really have nothing much to say about these suit designs. I mean, you can tell they were originally suppose to be a baseball motif Sentai when you read between the lines. So 3 out of 5 for these.
Chodenshi Bioman: For 80s vibes Sentai series, this hits all the right notes for me; the look of the helmets, the circuitry design on the chest. Solid 5 out of 5 for these. ^^
Dengeki Sentai Changeman: Very solid helmet design. Suit design overall hits almost all the notes, but I can't help but think they're wearing tank tops. XD So 4 out of 5. ^^
Choshinsei Flashman: Love. These. SUITS! For a show that came out in 1986, these look so futuristic and cool. 5 out of 5 for me! ^^
Hikari Sentai Maskman: Overall a pretty solid look for these suits, I really don't have too much to say about them. Again, nifty helmet design. So a good 4 out of 5 with these.
Choju Sentai Liveman: Even tho Black Bison and Green Sai appear in episodes 28/29, I'm gonna count them here for the core team. Very solid design for each. Blue Dolphin is my favorite with her helmet (And simply blue XD). That said, my only gripe is Yellow Lion. That lion on his chest bugs the hell outta me; like someone took a kid's elementary school drawing and put it on the suit. Minus that discrepancy, a good 4.5 out of 5 for the suits ^^
Kousoku Sentai Turboranger: Solid suits. Solid helmet designs. I don't got really too much to say about these suits. They even have a nifty white Powerless version of the suits. 5 out of 5 ^^
Chikyu Sentai Fiveman: Another cool uniformity with the suit design. I especially dig the symbols on the helmets' foreheads to show off what these five siblings, whom are teachers, teach ^^ So 5 out of 5 for these. ^^
Choujin Sentai Jetman: While I'll gripe on this show being put too high on a pedestal, and especially that damned ending, I will NOT deny that these suits are so frickin' cool! ^^ I've always loved birds, so these really hit home for me. 5 out of 5 ^^
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger: Y'all should know these suits all too well. Been a staple in Power Rangers since its conception. 'Course there's always that stigma of the Rangers having their respective dinosaur emblems on their chests in media other than the show! XD Love the helmets, love the diamond patterns on the suits. 5 out of 5 ^^
Gosei Sentai Dairanger: I half-agree with so many that we should've gotten these suits in season 2 of Mighty Morphin', brand-recognition and all that. Helmets and suit design... ya can't beat 'em. 5 out of 5. ^^
Ninja Sentai Kakuranger: First ever ninja motif, and they are glorious! And cuz of the helmet designs when they showed up in 'Alien Rangers', they really did look a bit alien to me. Probably cuz we were getting other footages that weren't Zyuranger or Kibaranger exclusive! XD 5 out of 5
Choriki Sentai Ohranger: I've seen people harp on the helmet designs, especially with the lips, but I don't see anything wrong with it specifically. The late, great JDF didn't like the star on his helmet, I still think it's rad. I especially love the circuitry designs on the suits. A solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Gekiso Sentai Carranger: Always loved the design of the suits. Lots of chrome on the helmets XD Nothing too much to say here, so 4.5 out of 5 .
Denji Sentai Megaranger: Simplistic design, but it does lend itself pretty good for the look. Didn't know that the five colors on their chest was suppose to be for the longest time, till I found out that Megaranger was a videogame-motif Sentai. I do kinda wish there was a little detail design on the gloves/boots, but otherwise another 4.5 out of 5 ^^
Seiju Sentai Gingaman: People have called these suits the 'Charlie Brown Rangers', but I've never minded that in the least even back in the day. The designs lend themselves well, so these suits get a 5 out of 5 for me.
KyuKyu Sentai GoGoFive: People still have an issue with the patterns on the chests looking like a pinwheel. I knew once that it's suppose to represent something, but have forgotten. But still, simple design, but prove to be impactful. So 5 out of 5 for these Five ^^
Mirai Sentai Timeranger: The helmets really sell me on the design. Not to mention it's the first suit to actually show a henshin device on the suit. 5 out of 5 ^^
Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger: I might sound biased, I haven't had an single issue with these suit designs once in almost 25 years since I saw these designs. From the sash-like design on the chests, the animal badge, the helmets. A solid 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger: I've got no notes about these suits. The silver parts on the arms really sell the ninja-motif for me. 5 out of 5.
Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger: I do love the suits, especially the helmets, but the gold symbol on the chest kinda clashes with the while diamond patterns. I dunno, it's always bugged me. AbareBlack's suit pulls the look off so much better since those patterns are gold. So these suits get a 4 out of 5.
Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger: How can you NOT fall in love with these suits, man? Tell me how? Tell me why? XD Need I say these suits get a solid 5 out of 5?
Mahou Sentai Magiranger: Once again, I am in love with these suits. I know Edna says 'NO CAPES!', but dammit, they look so good here. It's the right design where the capes aren't a hinderance, and the uniformity is FIRE in the design. 5 out of 5 for these ^^
GoGo Sentai Boukenger: I've heard complaints about these suits, but I dunno. There's something industrial about the look that I can't help but like. Again, very cool helmets. So 4.5 out of 5. ^^
Juken Sentai Gekiranger: Complaints about the suits not having a belt buckle, but who gives a crap? I love these suits! 5 out of 5. ^^
Engine Sentai Go-Onger: Simple look, but it all coalesces so well with the motif and fun energy of the show. I especially love the number-animal symbols on their chests. A 5 out of 5. ^^
Samurai Sentai Shinkenger: What could I possibly say about these designs that I never liked about these suits? The kanji symbol-visors really sell it for me here. Another 5 out of 5 ^^
Tensou Sentai Goseiger: As much flack as this show gets, I really love the ornate design of the suits. Really nails the majestic, angelic look. However if there's one gripe I've always had is that Gosei Blue is the only one that has the water-based 'Seaick Tribe' symbol on his chest. I sound like Death the Kid here for this, but it throws off the symmetry when you have two Skyick, and two Landick Goseigers. So a 4 out of 5 for these.
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: These suits haven't stopped being awesome since 2011. Only gripe I have is that I'm surprised the suits don't have a holster for their pistols and cutlasses. Just saying. Despite all that, these suits are a solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters: Very sweet look design-wise, though I can't help but always think how hot it must've been working in those leather suits. XD A 5 out of 5 for me with these. ^^
Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Still rad suits for me today. Design, motif, the fun, and the energy all make these suits a staple in Super Sentai. A BRAVE 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Ressha Sentai ToQger: Ok, I WAS skeptical of the suits when I first saw them; thought it was too simplistic, and the rails on the visors worried me. All that changed when I saw them in action. Still a simple design, but the lend themselves well. So a good 4.5 out of 5 for these suits.
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger: Very cool design, and once again, the helmets save the day. But why the black gloves and white boots though? So 4 out of 5.
Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger: Again, a simplistic design, but the animal faces on the suits makes it. And once again, the helmets are fire. A 5 out of 5 for me. ^^
Uchu Sentai Kyuranger: I. Friggin'. LOVE these suits! Each suit just has a very unique flavor for each Ranger. The wings on Aquila Pink are a little off to me at first, but that's nitpicky. A massive 5 out of 5 for me with these suits ^^
LuPat: For Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger; I really love how the phantom thief tophats are the helmets' visors. The suits overall are just a breath of fresh air. So 5 out of 5 for Lupinranger. For Keisatsu Sentai Patranger; I love how the cop hats are the visors, and you can see the necktie designs of the suits. Not quite as striking as the Lupinrangers, but will get a good 4.5 out of 5.
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger: The helmets really sell the knight-look. If I had once gripe, I wouldn't have done their emblem design look like it's pointing right down to their crotch. XD A good 4 out of 5. ^^
Mashin Sentai Kiramager: Love the looks, love the crystal motifs. Shine on, I say. A 24 karat 5 out of 5 for these suits. ^^
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger: Man this one's gonna be a touch call. 4 of the 5 are based off old-school Sentai Mechs; weird at first, but so awesome. Zenkaizer himself is just so dang cool! OK, 5 outta 5! XD
Avataro Sentai Donbrothers: Wacky designs that are totally awesome. But, oy, what brings it a bit down in Inu Brother and Kiji Brother. Again, their CG rendering looks so rough. Overall a good 4.5 out of 5.
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger: Holy crap, what don't I like about these suits?! Armored look, helmets, regal regalia... they all hit home for me. Easily a 5 out of 5. ^^
Bakuage Sentai BoonBoomger: Yes, I'll be the first to admit, and agree with others that the tires on the helmets was a thing to get use to. Still kinda is. But I'd be lying in saying that I didn't think it made these suits unique. The rest of the suits are very nifty. So these get a cranked-up 4.5 out of 5 for me. ^^
No.1 Sentai Gozyuger: Oh my giddy aunt, these suits are just dynamite! ^^ Just so pleasing to the eye to look at. Yeah, I like it... guess I'll put a ring on it. XD 5 out of 5 ^^
So there you have it. 50 years worth of cool Super Sentai suits. And here's to 50 more, baby!
Let me know in the comments what's your favorite Sentai suits in the comments below ^^
