Susie and Kris are honorary Gen-Xers (and/or Xennials)
I declare Susie and Kris to be honorary Gen-Xers! Or Xennials if you prefer (which are now also called "Goonies"). Although they're teenagers in the year 202X, a lot of the challenges they face are just like what Gen-Xers and Xennials went through back in the day. Or "latchkey" types of any generation, really, but people usually use that term in reference to Gen-X and Xennials. Also, I don't think Toriel is a bad parent, but that might be because I went through the same thing Kris is going through when I was 13, except I was GLaD to see both of my parents moving on. For me, my late-but-still-great meemaw was my Toriel, whereas my mom is more of an Alphys-like person (which is probably where I get my own Alphys-like traits from).
I've often said that Susie is basically the "John Bender" of this "Breakfast Club," but she's written better, and she's given more opportunities to be rebellious in ways that are more genuinely heroic. You know what that means, right? That means John Hughes got nothin' on Robert "Toby-Go-Nuts" Fox! Fwug Life, represent!
It surprises me that so much of Toby's fanbase is as young as they are. I'da thunk Undertale and Deltarune would appeal mostly to people born between 1975 and 1995. Not just because of their retro aesthetic but also the nitty-gritty, heavy-duty, punch-yer-SOUL-in-the-gut subject matter they explore. And I'm not talking about the esoteric symbolism, though if anyone younger than 30 has the know-how and the fastidious nature to analyze that stuff, I can only give them kudos (which is a singular word with a hard "s"). Most people just don't have an interest in that sort of thing, but I do, partially because my grandpa (who was of the Silent Generation and was basically a real-life Dr. Andonuts) was a 32nd-degree former Freemason. He rejected it in his twilight years because he rightly viewed their traditions and rituals as rigid and pointless pomp and circumstance. But I've gone off on a tangent, haven't I? I can always blame that tendency on my "inner Alphys" that I inherited from my mom's side of muh fam.
