Super Sentai: Primary Mecha ^^
Well howdy do!
Super Sentai didn't HAVE to this. I mean, dudes in spandex suits kickin' ass, and blowin' up a monster with a combined weapon that makes a big bang? Conservatives might say that's more than enough. But a battle will escalate, you'll wanna fight fire with fire. And as my boy Graveheart from 'War Planets' once done said, 'Big Problem require big solutions!' And that's what we're talkin' about here. The cherry on that cake make has made Super Sentai worthwhile, that all started with the Japanese Spider-Man show, the Mecha.
For this list, I'm just going through the 'primary Mecha' from each show, cuz I'm sure we all know, there has been a LOT of Mecha in each series. Some more than others. So all the 'Secondary Mecha', '6th Ranger Mecha', 'Evil Mecha', and 'Ultrazords' will have their own separate lists. And I'm scoring them on a 1 to 5 scale.
Without gilding the lily and with no more ado, starting with:
Himitsu Sentai Goranger: Variblune - I wasn't sure if I could count this as a Mecha. It's a big ol' plane, not a robot. A fortress if you will. The Variblune is a very nifty 70s design, lookin' like a flying tiger. If they ever made a 'Shin' Goranger movie, and make Variblune turn into a transforming robot, count me in. It's a pipedream, but it would be neat. Hopefully when we ever do get a SMP Gokai-Oh, it'll come with a Variblue, so they can combine. So this gets a good 4 out of 5. ^^
J.A.K.Q. Dengekikai: Sky Ace - another plane, but unlike the Variblune, it's just... OK. It just feels like something you'd see in an old school Gundam show, with style tho. But that style doesn't really save it, so it gets a 3 out of 5.
Battle Fever J: Battle Fever Robo - the first robot of Sentai. Though it doesn't transform, it has a very nifty look for the 70s. Just a big frickin' samurai robot with a vicious assortment of weapons, along with a sword with a sheath. How can you get any better? This guy gets a 5 out of 5 ^^
Denshi Sentai Denziman: DaiDenzin - the first transforming robot. A very nifty design that's blue. Gotta love my blue. Woulda made the helmet a different shade of yellow, but that's just a nitpick. A good 4.5 out of 5 for me on him ^^
Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan: Sun Vulcan Robo - the first combining mech. The helmet design is invocative of old school tokusatsu designs, but it all coalesces into the design that's pleasing to the eye for me. A solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Dai Sentai Goggle V: Goggle Robo - first off, the name is just yeesh. Second, reminds me of one of the vehicular Voltron design, and the head's way too big on the suit. I dunno, this one just doesn't grabs me. 2 out of 5.
Kagaku Sentai Dynaman: Dyna Robo - it comes off much better than Goggle Robo, and has a multitude of weapons. I really don't have to much to say, so he gets a 5 out of 5 ^^
Choudenshi Bioman: Bio Robo - Oh boy, this design is so nice. The black, silver and red just WORKS. And I am all in for the helmet design ^^ You wouldn't think this can turn into two jets. A solid 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Dengeki Sentai Changeman: Change Robo - it looks way to similar so Dyna Robo with a mix of Goggle Robo. I would've loved a mecha that fits better with Changeman's mythical animal aesthetic. So this gets a 1 out of 5 in terns of design. I do love the shield where you can draw the sword from.
Choshinsei Flashman: Flash King - wouldn't be my first choice name wise, but it more than makes up for it in the design department. I love the three vehicles that make him up, and again, the look is so pleasing to the eye. A flashing 5 out of 5 ^^
Hikari Sentai Maskman: Great Five - the first 5-piece Mecha combo, though I wouldn't have named the vehicles 'Maskys'. Overall great design, would've done up the face part a bit better, so for that, I'll give him a 4.5 out of 5.
Choju Sentai Liveman: LiveRobo - the first animal-themed Mecha, and it works pretty awesome here. The Jet Falcon is my favorite part for this combo. A very live 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Kousuko Sentai Turboranger: Turbo Robo - Its feet are cars that'll skate circles around ya. What more do you want? XD A very cool look for the predecessor of car-themed Sentai. So a 5 out of 5 ^^
Chikyu Sentai Fiveman: Fiverobo - it's three vehicles make a cool 'trailer' mode, and a badass-looking bot. Another design that's so pleasing to the eye. 5 out of 5 ^^
Choujin Sentai Jetman: Jet Icarus - Again, I may not enjoy this Sentai and call it the 'greatest Sentai of all time', but I'd be lying in saying that Jet Icarus isn't worthy of any kind of praise. The five Jet Machines themselves have awesome designs, they form into one big fortress-jet, and the robo design itself is just so damn cool! So a 5 out of 5 for me on this ^^
Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger: Daizyujin - y'all should know wo this is. It's only been a staple in Power Rangers history since the beginning; the original Dino Megazord, baby! XD Yeah, I couldn't tell you what it is; the overall look, that chest design, or the helmet, Daizyujin has always been an epic bot. I hate its Dino Tanker mode tho. It's never looked good to me. So for that he get's a... solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Gosei Sentai Dairanger: Dairen'Oh - I said this in another journal that I never hated the look nor the transition from the Dino Megazord to the Thunder Megazord. I mean Ryusei-Oh goes from dragon to a robot mode, and the other four form armor around it. How could I hate the look of that? Lookin' like an ancient armored Chinese warrior. So a solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Ninja Sentai Kakuranger: Muteki Shogun - it looks like a big robo-castle with a origami crane helmet, awesome! He's pretty bulky, and I do think Kakure Daishogun is better, so he gets a 4 out of 5.
Choriki Sentai Ohranger: Ohranger Robo - Still love this design to this date since I was a kid. It's ornate-ish look, and interchangeable helmets really win me over. A solid 5 out of 5. ^^
Gekiso Sentai Carranger: RV Robo - five really sweet cars that lend themselves very well in a robo design that's, again, pleasing to the eye ^^ A solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Denji Sentai Megaranger: Galaxy Mega - love it love it LOVE IT! Did I mention I love it? It's all about that blue, baby! Its body is a kickass spaceship, its head is a slick shuttle, I can't love this robo any more than I can without simply simping for it XD A solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Seiju Sentai Gingaman: GingaiOh - Five living giant animals that can transform into five mechanized animals that combine into a pretty kickass design of a robot. For the bot itself... is a 4 out of 5. It's Armor Shine super mode gets a 5 out fo 5 ^^
Kyukyu Sentai GoGoFive: Victory Robo - it feels simplistic, but at the same time dynamic. I can't really explain it. Its five vehicle designs are sweet on their own, and the main Mecha is just a neat look. 5 out of 5 ^^
Mirai Sentai Timeranger: TimeRobo - a very sweet futuristic look that has two different modes; alpha and beta. ^^ When we do get the SMP model for TimeRobo I may have to get two; one for each of the different modes XD But yeah, a solid 5 out of 5 for me on this. ^^
Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger: GaiKing - and boy is this guy a king! The sheer multitude of different combinations and overall look is why GaoKing is one of my favorite Sentai Mechs of all time. Another solid 5 out of 5! ^^
Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger: Senpuujin - another pretty excellent design, though I think I like its 'Hurrier' mode more. A very cool array of different weapons from the Karakuri Balls, but among them, I never liked that serpent sword. Overall, a good 4 out of 5 ^^
Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger: AbarenOh - much as I've always liked the design, I do think the Ptera is misplaced on the chest. I dunno, it's just always bugged me. Love the drill tail attack. So a 4 out of 5.
Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger: Dekaranger Robo - five badass DekaMachines that become a sweet-lookin' robo. Why do we NOT have a SMP model of this yet!?! 5 out of 5! ^^
Mahou Sentai Majiranger: MagiKing - from the five actually becoming their individual mechs, from four turning into an awesome dragon mode, to all making up a magician-styled robot with a wizard's hat and awesome wings?! Yeah, that's a 5 out of 5 for me.
GoGo Sentai Boukenger: Daibouken - some may call this the 'Minecraft Megazord', what with having a shovel and a pick axe that form the sword.... and I wouldn't blame you for making that joke. XD He's just a nifty industrial-looking bot. So a 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Juken Sentai Gekiranger: Gekitouja - three cool kitties forming a kung fu-based bot? Absolutely! Easily a 5 out of 5 for me. ^^
Engine Sentai Go-Onger: Engine-O - the Engines are fun and cool characters on their own, and the first three's main Mecha combo is something else for me. Yeah, the vehicles having anime-esque eyes will... and have... made people do a doubletake, but the appeal and charm of the show makes this Mecha design so fun for me. A 5 out of 5 ^^
Samurai Sentai Shinkenger: ShinkenOh - always loved origami, and making that a mech was surely no walk in the rock garden. But they did. ^^ And I really love the look and feel of this guy. A 5 out of 5. ^^
Tensou Sentai Goseiger: Gosei Great - much flack as this Sentai gets, I gotta say this Mecha is pretty Great. ^^ I ain't gonna get into the 'Headder System' of this, but the ornate look and killer sword makes it up for me. So a good 4 out of 5 for me.
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: GokaiOh - oh boy this is gonna be tough for me. I do love the design of this guy, but I think it shoulda just been a robot that could transform from the Gokai Galleon like Galaxy Mega. I've mentioned this before in another journal. The other four vehicles just feel so superfluous, and you don't even use all of them in the ultimate combo. So sorry to say this, guys, but this is a 3 out of 5 for me.
Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters: Go-Buster Oh - Go-Buster Oh boy, this is one of those times where the show does it far better than the toy. But even that; this design never sat well with me. Yeah, the Mecha designs is one of the main reasons I haven't gone back to rewatch this Sentai. For fans of this Sentai, nothing against you, but this gets a 2 out of 5 for me.
Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: - Kyoryuzin - there's always been something so pleasing to me about this design; the big stomping T-Rex feet, the T-Rex shoulder, the head design, all the above. Another minagary of different combos that lends itself well with the tone and aesthetics of this Sentai. A 5 out of 5 for me ^^
Ressha Sentai ToQGer: ToQ-Oh - get your phallic jokes out of the way, we all know you're thinking about them cuz of that one scene. Regardless of that crap, another pleasing-to-the-eye look and design that leans into the 'Rainbow Line'. So a 5 out of 5 for me on this ^^
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger: Shurikenjin - interesting to say the least. Got the main red bot controlling the rest of the main Mecha like Ripley with the Power Loader from 'Aliens'. However, like those mech suits in the 'Matrix' sequels, it leaves you pretty open and vulnerable. It's just okay, so he gets a 3 out of 5 for me.
Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger: ZyuohKing - once again, insert your own Minecraft joke here. A pretty simplistic design, what with the stacking of blocks and all. But all that really makes it work for me with this design. Weird, yes, but I can't help but like it. So a good 4 out of 5 for me ^^
Uchu Sentai Kyuranger: KyurenOh - where do I even begin and why the hell do we not have an SMP model of this yet? I love the Voyagers, love the aesthetics, the look, the combos. Yes, it's a 5 out of 5 for me! XD
Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger: For LupinKaizer - phantom thief hat, gatling gun, and a saw blade, and I especially love the face. He gets a 5 out of 5 ^^ For PatKaiser - I really dig the bulkier look for this, with a built-in club and cannon-arm. Yeah, 5 out of 5 ^^
Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger: KishiRyuOh - gotta say, this is the most athletic Mecha I've ever seen in a Sentai! XD the Lego-like system this has is pretty something, if not odd, with certain combos. So this gets a good 4 out of 5 for me.
Mashin Sentai Kiramager: Kiramaizin - five different vehicles that can make two different bots. First time a Sentai uses a vehicle as its main weapon XD The face design is what makes this for me, so this gets a 4 out of 5 ^^
Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger: ZenkaiOh - two different forms of this, so lemme break it down. For ZenkaiOh JuraGaon, the half-dino/half-lion really lend themselves well... I mean they have to XD So a good 5 out of 5. For ZenkaiOh VrooMagine, a pleasing combo of pink and blue, though I would've put Vroom's wheels in a different spot. So a good 4.5 out of 5.
Avataro Sentai Donbrothers: Don Onitaijin - A big-ass Samurai mecha that's always hilarious when combining. XD He gets a 4.5 out of 5. If anyone brings up DonZenkaiOh, since he was in the first few episodes of Donbrothers... with no explanation of where the hell he came from, of course I seem to be missing a good chuck of media for both Zenkaiger and Donbrothers. Otherwise, that design is OK. 3 out of 5.
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger: King-Ohger - no I didn't repeat that name, the Mecha's called 'King-Ohger', and the team got its name from that ^^ I love my insects (most anyway), and this is just a badass design. A solid 5 out of 5 ^^
Bakuage Sentai BoonBoomger: BoonBoomger Robo - cars combining with the curry-making awesomeness that is Bundorio Bunderas, makes this mecha design so pleasing to my eyes. So he gets a 5 out of 5 ^^
No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger: TegaSword - boy this is actually gonna be hard to score. Not only is this the teams henshin device/primary weapon, but can grow and turn into a giant robot? That idea alone will give it a 5 out of 5. But as of present, I'm not watching this Sentai, and only seen clips of these Mecha in action. I'm waiting to March to get it all on DVD to stream it all. Plus, it's not your traditional standard five-piece combining mecha, but five that has different armor/weapons that represent each Ranger. So I'm not gonna score this. Nor will I score any of the other mecha f Gozyuger in future journals till I see the whole series. Buy as of late, besides TegaSword Red, my favorite look is TegaSword Black. And who knows what the SMP version of this will be in the future XD
That's all I got for this edition. Lemme know in the comments which is your favorite primary Mecha in the comments ^^
Thanks for your time. ^^

I'd have to give it to Dairenoh, and maybe Muteki Shogun. Also Victory Robo. Really all of the mecha from the 90s are solid in my eyes. I kinda wish we would get more mecha just like them in terms of aesthetic and simplicity.

Yeah, but that ain't to say I haven't been enjoying the modern mecha stuffs. Kyuren-Oh is an absolute fave ^^

idk as far as the modern mechs go, I tend to gravitate more towards the secondary/sixth ranger ones. GoZyuJin, King Express, and Tarantula Knight to name a few.
