In need of an opinion..

.. I've felt lately that, I kind of want to commission someone; but when it comes down to it.. I'm wondering.. do I want to spend more and get a really nice color commission..? Or get a few sketches instead of one? Like, my goal in mind is a "feel good" commission(s) I can look back on and kinda be like "awesome, I got a great piece of art of my character."
With that in mind.. I don't commission very often at all, and the only people I've ever commissioned were friends who were offering, and I wanted to support their efforts (and they already knew my characters and wouldn't mind drawing them)... So, I honestly don't know what to commission..
So here's a question to those of you who commission often.. What do you normally want to see when you commission someone? An artist's rendition? What an artist will do with what you give? Maybe what they'll do with what you prompt?
.. I.. I don't even know where to begin, but it's been on my mind all day.. and I kind of want to.. well, commission someone to draw a character of mine, so I could gawk over it.
... But I have no idea what I'd want someone to draw a character of mine doing. Perhaps leave that up to the artist..?
Maybe I'm just being too awkward about it, I've never commissioned someone I don't know before so.. I just honestly.. well, to reiterate my thoughts: Don't know where to begin.
Thanks for looking, thoughts on commissioning would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the thought. :)
Depends on the artist's style for whether a sketch or a colour picture would be better. My sketches are pretty crap, I try so hard to get the lines to be clean that there's no life in them, but I fix this when I colour the picture. Shading is where I work the personality and defining features in. I guess some artists are the same.
Personally, I'd find someone who's GREAT with sketches and get several pictures. Art trades are good for this too.
Thanks for your thoughts. :D
