"Weren't you guys supposed to be conquering the world?"

I finished watching the first season of Astro Fighter Sunred recently (been watching it on and off for the past several months.) I really want to recommend it to everyone, but it's kind of hard to describe what I find so appealing about it, and it's definitely not for everyone, as almost all the people I've shown it too haven't really gotten into it.
The series is sort of a parody of the super sentai genre, (think Power Rangers et. al) where the monsters are a normal, accepted part of society, who cook, clean, do chores around the house, and have ordinary day jobs. For the most part, they're very polite, and get along well with their neighbours, and it seems like their only motivation for trying to kill Sunred and take over the world is because they're monsters, and that's what monsters do.
Sunred, as shown in numerous flashbacks and the opening sequences, (of which there are a few variations even within the first season) took his job seriously at one point in time, but is now a jaded, bitter, unemployed slacker who spends all his time playing pachinko with his girlfriend's money. He doesn't take the monsters seriously anymore, not even bothering to show up in uniform to fight the monsters. He does keep his helmet on at all times, but as he, and other heroes, are never shown without them, and can somehow manage to eat, drink, and smoke with them on, it seems as if he was just born with a helmet for a head. He doesn't even know where his old tools of the trade are anymore, and is seen trying to pawn off his kamen rider-esque bike for less and less with each episode's opening.
The show's really very charming, and its humor comes from the interactions of the characters and their quirks, very reminiscent of Azumanga Daioh, rather than the "lol so random" type of humor in something like Excel Saga. Chances are, if you liked Azumanga, you'll probably like Sunred. You can watch it streamed or however else you want to, The first episode is slow, but it picks up soon afterwards, and the episodes are only 15 minutes long. If by the the end of the third or fourth episode, you aren't digging it, you probably won't like the rest of the series. If you stick with it, though, let me know! I'd love to have more people to talk about the series with, especially with the second season still ongoing! C:

Fave character by far is Tiser. He's so damn funny.
Did they ever say who the third Weather Fighter was? I don't think he was featured at all except a brief mention of his name. Perhaps in Season 2, if there is one in the works.
