Y'all have any movie recommendations?

General
So, come the end of every month I'm always swamped with a grotesque amount of work from my job. Long story short, I'm breaking up my work by watching movies for intervals between each thing that I do.
I've burned through a ton of great shit in the past 2 days, but living abroad doesn't really help someone stay in touch with good moviedom. If you guys have any recommendations, I'd love to hear 'em!
WATCHED SO FAR:
No Country For Old Men
Last House on the Left
500 Days of Summer
Paranormal Activity
Rec <- holy shit, I was scared of lanky violent zombie girls being in the house for hours
Let the Right One In
Atonement
Requiem for a Dream
Gran Turino
Joy Luck Club
Good horrors (PA, rec) or movies with beautiful cinematography (No Country, Right One) always do well in my books, but tell me about anything that should be seen at least once before death.

FA+

Yeah, good horrors are good, lemme know what they were.
No torture porn unless it's "Martyrs" though :(
Actually, I hated drag me to hell. Evil Dead is an accidental masterpiece. I hated feeling like Raimi was trying to fabricate the same feeling with this one.
Here, I'll just put the ones I have downloaded in the last months. See if something catches your eye:
Cirque.du.Freak.The.Vampires.Assistant;
Family.Guy.The.Movie.2005;
Ultraviolet;
Master.of.the.Flying.Guillotine
Aeon.Flux;
Day.Watch[2006][Unrated.Edition];
Resident Evil:Degeneration;
Wanted;
Kung.Fu.Panda;
From.Dusk.till.Dawn.1996;
Shelter;
District 9;
Carrie (1976).
If u had asked for animés or series I would have more titles, but oh well XD
Hope u like at least some of these. c ya.
I don't think I'm the kind of person who can't just have a fun time at a movie, but I felt like if Robert Downey Jr wasn't there, the movie would have been forgotten within minutes of viewing :/
It's from the '80s, and so it has that '80s look and is scored by Tangerine Dream.
In a nutshell, it's about a wrong phone call to a random phone on the street (remember they had phonebooths back then!) and a frantic message that leads to....well, I shouldn't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but you're left wondering if the call was a prank that went horribly wrong (causing the events by creating the situation among the chain of people the information passes to), or was it a real warning and it was all already in-motion?
It follows the receiver of the call (Anthony Edwards) and how he reacts to the information he's received.
I've always enjoyed the strange feeling and unanswered questions this movie leaves me with. It also has a totally un-Hollywood-like ending!
Another one I'd suggest is The Quiet Earth (1985).
It's British (so may be a little hard to find, but it IS on DVD), and it's about a man who wakes up to find he's the last man on earth.
How would YOU handle that?!
Hope this gives you some enjoyment for a few hours.
I haven't seen any of the sequels, but I gave 4 and 5 a brief look and wasn't feeling it. Needs less cast, more cabin fever.
Actually, maybe Cube would be right up your alley. Cube 2 and 3 really arn't as good, but 1 is my favorite movie of all time.
Great concept, not just in plot, but in good movie business. One freaking set for the whole movie! Think of the dinero they saved.
Worst - Watchmen, Bruno + Avatar
Up is Pixars best to date, I think... Really amazing work, on a lot of levels. Star Trek was a nice surprise too.
I'll check out Coroline!
And yeah, I, too, didn't think Watchmen was nearly as bad as everyone says it was. The opening cinematic alone was brilliant.
I never knew of the comic before the movie.
District 9 was a nice surprise too! If you haven't seen that, I'd highly recommend it.
I wouldn't say the movie was perfect (though I'm grateful they didn't try to integrate the Tales of the Black Freighter arc, since I don't see how that could have been done without taking the movie to an unholy length), but as far as conceivable film adaptations go, I think they met the goal of telling the essential plot and keeping things enjoyable.
Thinks I would keep: Guy who played Rorschach. The only role I thought would be impossible to cast.
Things I would lose: Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, and the over-the-top fight scenes that dulled the 'these are normal people in fancy costumes' aspect
Even so, I just didn't think it's flaws added up to an altogether terrible movie, and I'm overjoyed that through hollywood exposure a lot of people who wouldn't have read one of the greatest achievements in graphic novels and the super hero genre (if not THE greatest achievement of the latter) probably picked up a copy.
I love Eastwood, but I think Million Dollar and Unforgiven place higher in my heart than this one, purely because those asian kids don't know how to act (see Joy Luck Club for more details on that)
Horror/Scifi
Quarantine
Alien (and sequels)
The Terminator (and sequels)
Stylized Action
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2
Sherlock Homes
Fantasy/Adventure/Action
Back to the Future (and sequels)
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)
WaterWorld (Director's Cut)
Tank Girl
Exciting True Stories
Slumdog Millionaire
Changeling
Valkyrie
Family Adventure
Horton Hears a Who
Neverending Story
Finding Nemo
Bolt
Fantasy-Adventure
Big Fish
What Dreams May Come
Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Comedy
Airheads
Groundhog Day
Anyway, Waterworld is actually very good if you watch the director's cut. The theater release is garbage.
I see I'm not the only one who thinks that. Nice. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the director's cut.
If you want to be uncomfortable for an hour and a half, check out "Eraserhead". It's a movie more about how it makes you feel than what's happening on screen. It's surrealist.
For good films anyone with an interest in good cinema should see, I always recommend Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1952) and Fritz Lang's "M" (1932).
Kurosawa is a genius, and Seven Sam's is worth a rewatch, but I've never seen M. I remember reading that it was based on the vampire of dusseldorf though, which is a seriously depressing bit of serial killer, so... I'll wait until I'm in that "I can deal with child murder" mood before catching it~
Being as old as it is, "M" is not explicit as to the nature of the crimes committed against children, nor does it show them. It deals mostly with the reaction of society to that kind of criminal in its midst and in so doing deals modern sensationalist news media a much deserved kick in the teeth.
I'll definitely give 'M' a go though, assuming I can track it down. I have no enemy who brings out my sarcastic face more than modern media. I've been properly baited by your words!!
Ignore all the screaming naysayers (who I'd bet haven't even seen it)... Quarantine, the American remake of Rec, is actually really good, too.
The Legend of Hell House
I'm too lazy to write it again, but in point form:
- Loved the remake as a kid
- Now wishes death on lili taylor for whimpering and shuffling to and fro for the entire movie
- Can I watch the original without my feelings of ire for the remake interfering?
Up
Kung-fu Hustle
Red sand
coraline
Hamlet
Hamlet2
Love Up and Kung-Fu hustle <3 Stephen Chow is a prince!
And if you can, find the original japanese version of the film Pulse. Avoid the remake.
Jacob's Ladder was absolutely stunning. As were Pulse and the Japanese TV release of Ju-On.
The Passion of the Joan of Arc (I think that's the proper title, it's an old silent film - French)
Haxan (Another old silent movie, this one with witches & Satan & furries)
Orlando (Artdecade recommended this to me, it was fantastic)
Amadeus
Adore that movie. My ex used to sing that song while he accompanied himself on piano. It might have been the entire basis of my love for him.

I love how it begins with the frenetic music video touch and it has a really cool ending that just kind of lets you down easy
Imaginarium of Dr Passusdfsfsfsfs something
The Salton Sea
Coraline
Role Models
i have several hundred more i could suggest.... but no
I've ne'er heard of ink, but it's made this journal twice so... I GUESS I SHOULD!
Lord of War
Das Experiment (german but awesome)
Sky Blue (Anime)
12 Angry Men (1957) <-- another fantastic film
City Of Lost Children
Super Troopers
The Number 23
Cypher
Chopper
Flatliners
Lords Of Dogtown
Bringing out The Dead
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
thats all for now
Don't bother: The Wolfman, Shutter Island
Also Will Farrell NO THANKS
event horizon
Is triangle the prequel to cube?
Even though I disagree with the morale nowadays, haha :D
It's still a terrific movie. Gondry is a supoib director. The climax/childhood flashbacks get me all misty, everytime.
Not all of my recommendations will be in the horror genre, but they are still among my favorite movies.
"Closetland"
"Ju-On" (Japanese TV release)
"Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" (if you're not familiar with Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', you may wish to watch Mel Gibson's performance of "Hamlet" (pretty good) or Kenneth Branagh's version (excellent))
"Oscar" (A very funny comedy of errors starring Sylvester Stallone)
"Jaws"
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
"Twelve Angry Men" (This move is the reason I LOVE getting selected for jury duty. Watch the original black & white version)
"Thelma & Louise"
"Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension"
"Brazil"
"The Dark Backward"
"Lola Rennt" ("Run, Lola, Run")
"Othello" (Lawrence Fishburne's performance is excellent)
"The Prophecy" (with Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel and Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer (*orgasmic*))
"Sunshine" (with Cillian Murphy)
"Naked Lunch"
There are hundreds more I could list....but those should hold you over for now. Hmm....I listed three movies with Richard Dreyfuss ("Jaws", "Close Encounters", and "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern"). Innnnnnnnnteresting.
Oh!! I forgot to add "The Cell" to that list. (Vincent D'Onofrio is fantastic in this film)
I still haven't seen Run Lola Run... I probably shouldn't be admitting to that in public.
Heh! Yeah...his performance was a bit lackluster. However, I seem to recall some mention of that in the commentary. That he was specifically told to do it that way. I could be wrong, though.
Haven't seen it. Is it small enough that I can catch it on youtube?
The setting is during WW2, but Pan's Labyrinth is much more than a movie about war. (Besides: there even were no Nazis, only facist spanish people, rebels and innocent people)
It's about a little girl, trying to escape our world and find her sanctuary in a fantastic world... though both worlds are dangerous and cruel.
Oh! The movie won 3 oscars btw.

See you around!
Also Paranormal Activity was AWESOME! =]
Love the twist ending
Felt like Resident Evil -> RezEvil 4. Making the jump from tension based horror to action packed general scariness.
God it just a fun movie, actually poignant at times, and as much as I hated the lead actor in whatever that stupid movie he was in before (superbad i think it was...which is a good description of it) he was fantastic in this one ^_^
The humor is flippant and fun at times, serious at others, and just...well just really well done.
A deep thinking masterpeice? No. But it wasn't designed to be
Buy beyond that movie, i, unfortunatly, cannot recommend Wolverine: Origins. Mostly out of personal bias on how they F*cked it up
Also great is Primer. Two engineers run a sort of "inventors club" in their spare time in their garage, but one day the project they were working on turns out to be something very different, and very, very important. I won't say what it is because I think it'd be best to go into it blind, but you can investigate it further if you wish. Caution; it's very, very dry.
Consider Primer on the list!
Try getting your hands on the first Nightmare on Elm street and the first Friday the 13th.
With more explosions than ever.
I don`t know any good movies that came out after that so far. A good comedy movie is Superbad, you gotta watch that before you die for sure!
I also really liked "Up". I know I might sound like a pussy, but when I first saw it in theaters I cried like a bitch!
