Freecycle, seriously.

Head to http://www.freecycle.org/, find the one closest to your area, sign up, read the rules, and look at all the furniture people are giving away. Got my fold-up couch, coffee table and huge computer monitor off there, not a dime spent.

Furniture is overrated. Fill the apartment to knee level with styrofoam packing peanuts. They serve as instant furniture. You can sit or lay down on them as needed. They also make fights more fun.
