Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is Six hundret and sixty six."
Revelations ch. xiii v. 18.
Let´s see if you can guess where I took it from ("The bible" ain´t the correct answer! ^oo^)!
Note: Here, the spelling mistakes ain´t my fault; I originally transferred them from (insert answer here)!
Iron Maiden basically copied these from the English Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
"Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short..." is from Revelation 12:12b.
"Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is Six hundret and sixty six." is from Revelation 13:18.
Yes, they definitely misspelled Revelation, as there is no 's' in the name of the actual book, in any version of the Bible I've ever seen.
Just as the US says, "color" or behavior" and the UK says "colour" or "behaviour", the spelling of "hundred" varies from region to region as well.
Considering where Iron Maiden is from, the word "hundret" is not actually misspelled. It is from a dialect used in Norfolk, England, and some other counties in the area. Iron Maiden was formed in England. So, their only mistake was in misspelling the name of the book, and in failing to properly cite where the first half of their quote originated.
Just to make it clear for the others, of course originally it´s from the bible; that´s why I claimed out that point.
I have no clue why, though, I always thought it was Revelation. xD
The Methodist church I grew up with used the KJV, and I've seen some Methodists preferring to use the NIV, both of which have Revelation without the S. Which Bible is used in your church? It may be one to add to my collection. I often like to compare between the various versions when I look something up, as it helps to understand things better, even when there may be disagreements among some of the translations.
The theory I subscribe to about the number is this:
It's the hebrew mathematical code for disguising names. The greek translation of the same code is 616, the hebrew version is 666.
I also subscribe to the theory that they were talking about Nero, and so I tend to completely ignore the last book of the Bible, which has earned me alot of anger among the more conservative members of my church who interpret everything in it literally. x3
