So, I found out today that i am technically the victim of a crime. I believe i'm going to have to file a police report and do all kinds of annoying and time consuming things.
I was expecting a check from AAA car insurance to pay for a minor dent in my car caused by the door of someone with AAA insurance. I called the calim lady last week because the check had not arrived and it had been a while since she called to let me know they were sending it. Plus, this would not be the first time that mail didn't get delivered here. I have had previous things including a check and health insurance cards returned to sender with the note 'attempted unknown' already. It is rather frustrating.
It looks like the post office must have delivered my check to someone though.
The lady said last week to wait till Monday, if i don't get it to call again and she will make sure the check was not cashed and she will re-issue it. Monday I called, still no check. She got back to me today. Previously, the check had not been cashed. However... when she tried to stop payment on it today, the computer told her that the check had just been cashed. So, she's waiting for the cleared check to come back to find out what happened. I need to wait more for my $$.
Plus, I belive it's a federal offence to open someone else's mail. If you get mail that does not belong to you, return it to the post office. At least that's what I would do. Plus, they forged my signature on a check and managed to get it cashed somehow? Maybe they got my mail before too. How frustrating!
I have been advised to file a police report and to make sure to get copies of all of the info that AAA gets in reference to this.
I wonder how someone would really think that they could get away with such a thing. Obviously a check is able to be traced to some degree and most places that cash checks require that you have an account and if the check isn't written out to you, how would you then convince your bank to cash it?
I am sure that they will still get me my $$. However, I really can't believe that someone thinks they can get away with such a thing so i definitely want to make sure that the police take care of whatever is legally necessary. If it results in some type of financial compensation for me for dealing with all of this, that's great but I just want whoever did it to get the appropriate punishment.

I am assuming that the insurance company will re-issue the check after they know i didn't cash it.
