Online Gaemz (a.k.a. "The Hell's Wrong With You?")
I was walkin' with a friend of mine today and, because we never outgrew the raging geek thing, the conversation quickly turned to video games. I recently installed Guild Wars on my new computer after a two year hiatus, so we started talking about GOOD OL' ONLINE RPGS.
Somewhere in our reminiscing about the stupid/silly stuff that we used to do and the ~crazy hijinks~ my old computer used to pull, the conversation took a sour turn. A turn towards, "I seriously hate playing with strangers because they take the game too seriously."
Which, it's true. My ex was a prime example; he's the one who initially got me playing the game, but the amount of fun he had with it was probably in the negative numbers. He did nothing but scream at me for being incompetent, scream at others for being incompetent, scream at the game for "fucking me over," and he seemed to believe that his in-game money was coming out of his wallet.
I honestly didn't start HAVING fun with the games until I started playing on my own.
And my friend is a healer on WoW, a priest. Lots of people tanking for her casually "forget" that she's not geared and has a lower armor rating, run right up to her while they're being attacked, and then scream at her when she gets killed because "you should have moved" and "I do NOT mess up." Despite the fact I've seen her try her hardest to run away, only to have these morons tail her until she gets targeted and mauled. Or they die, and it's her fault for running.
I gotta ask, does anyone play these games just for the fun of it? Or is this really some obsession worth getting so bent out of shape over? I mean, I get pretty fanatical and defensive about some of my fandoms, yeah, but I have yet to beat somebody with a controller for making me lose at Death Ball on JSRF. I mean, it's a video game, implying something to not be taken seriously. Implying something fun, you know?
I don't think they were made with the intention of turning players into vicious, perfectionist assholes who hate one another.
Ahaha, forgive me I'm RAMBLING LIKE WHOA. But what do you guys think?
---
Also, as a side note: Any of you play Guild Wars and don't mind a necromancer who spends waaaay too much time trying to fill their map? :B

Honestly, many people take online games way too seriously. I had a friend crying on the phone to me a few weeks ago because he wasn't allowed to go to a raid for a week. (Massive 25 person dungeon)
You're not rambling either, you have an good point. x3 I play the games for fun, and if they get boring, I take a break and try them again later.
I mean, I get frustrated sometimes (FUCK YOU NINJA GAIDEN; EVERY INCARNATION OF YOU FROM THE NES ON), but I will never understand this PERFECTIONIST FLAWLESS WARRIOR OH MY GOD I MAKE NO MISTAKES IT WAS ALL YOUR/THEIR/THE GAME'S FAULT mentality. XD
Gimme my JRPGs any day. XD Although it's mostly just because I haven't tried one before, I guess.
Because, honestly: They are fun, it just depends on who you play with.
LIKE, I play classes that shouldn't tank. Then I get impatient and try to tank. To be fair, my necromancer can take a few blows because he can summon an army and knows a lot of buffs, but... I still always die. XD
Because NCsoft won't tell me. >:C
SOMEDAY.
He made me make a Monk on Guild Wars for the sole fact that you can make them "unbeatable" with this... very, very touchy build (that they later made it to where it won't work) where you lower your health down to 5 max, cast a bunch of restorative buffs and damage-reduction spells that you had to maintain, and you acted as decoy while a ranged magic character killed all the enemies. And everything would be good until you fought a Mesmer who could break your buffs.
GUESS WHERE HE ALWAYS MADE ME GO.
GUESS WHO ALWAYS GOT YELLED AT FOR DYING FIRST. :|
But I have this feeling we'd both end up as thieves. XD (I'm no good at mages because I tend to charge in headfirst. xP)
Thieves or rogues. BEST KIND OF CLASS EVER.
But I once was randomized onto a tem with people I didn't know, and I accidentally came over and got the last hit on someone one of my team members had gotten the rest of the health off of. Never mind that I had been shooting at the guy for just as long and just missed everything but the last hit because I sucked, never mind that I was like UH SORRY to him as soon as he got annoyed, he spend the rest of the game hogging the chatlog with.
Over and over.
KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER
Forever.
We got out of that game (I think my team won) and back to the main menu thing, and within seconds, I am sent a chat message.
KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALER YOU FUCKING KILL STEALER
Meanwhile, I'm going to the help stuff to figure out how to block someone, and just... continuously...
THAT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT YOU STOLE MY KILL YOU FUCKING KILL STEALER KILL STEALER KILL STEALERRRRRRR
YEP.
LIKE A LION
HIDE YOUR KILLS IN TALLER TREES NEXT TIME
PRETEND I ACTUALLY THOUGHT OF SOMETHING WITTY TO SAY HERE.
Oh my god, something like that happened to me. Kind of. It was in the second expansion of Guild Wars, and I was trying to find a party to take out the final boss because I was getting my ass handed to me solo. So I assemble a team, and right before the fight, my computer wigs the fuck out.
So I end up lagging so far behind that the gate to the boss closes on me and I can't even get in there.
When everyone but me dies, one friendly guy is like, "Oh, there you are! We figured your connection died so we kinda went ahead without you. Sorry. :C"
And this other guy just starts going on and on, "YOU STUPID BITCH YOU LET US DIE YOU FUCKING WHORE HOW COULD YOU HAVE DONE THAT WE CAME ALL THIS WAY AND WE WOULD HAVE WON IF YOU DIDN'T ACT LIKE A CUNT UGH I HATE YOU LOG OUT LOG OUT AND I AM NEVER PLAYING WITH YOU AGAIN HOLY FUCKSHIT YOU JERK."
And I just leave.
And then he privately messages me, "YOU STUPID BITCH. >:C"
For, like, a week after that I would occasionally get messages from this dude, just telling me, "YOU SUCK."
WHOOOOORE
I MUST HAVE MISSED THE BOSS BECAUSE I WAS OUT ON A STREET CORNER SELLING MYSELF.
UNFORTUNATELY, they haven't yet figured out how to get him away from the game. XD
