Agreed, as well as the concept that social stigmas probably kept people to breeding with their "own kind" for a long time, as did the difficulty to cross long distances, as it was an issue before automobiles were common.

I would think that if people kept it within the same general species, like cats with cats, and dogs with dogs, and rodents with rodents, etc, it'd be fine. So you'd probably have groups of species that would more commonly have pairings, and then small pockets of mixed species couples, which would probably be frowned on by society as a whole, since it might cause genetic mutations.

In my world, as a writer, I only use certain animals in anthro form. And they only can mate with whatever animal they could in real life. For example. Wolves can breed with all dogs, coyotes, and jackels, but not foxes or cats. I have non-anthro critters running around, too. They get eaten. Brandon Wolf, in his interview states that he could never eat another sentient being, but he has no objection to eating hamburgers and hot dogs.

I guess most furries tend not to include the non-anthro animals in thier worlds, leading to the pred/pray thing.

Well, no. What I'm saying is that they're all the same species, but with different variants or mutations within. Like how you have teacup chihuahuas and St Bernards looking quite different, but still being dogs.

I've got two different furry worlds that I use when I'm writing fiction or drawing something.

One is the "realistic" universe, in which furries evolved from their basic animal counterparts. For example, all canine furs evolved from a generic "wolf" ancestor. Meaning that despite all the variations, all canine persons can interbreed and produce offspring. Same with felines, equines, mustelids etc. Members of the same family cannot interbreed. There have been rare cases of inter-species breeding, but the offspring that result are often horribly disfigured and/or suffer multiple medical problems, especially if the parents are from a completely different family (wolf/deer, tiger/rabbit, that sort of thing.) Scientists believe that this is caused by fluke genes in the parents where there's a big fuck-up with the chromosomes passed on during babby making. (Yeah, I'm not even going into depth because my pseudo-science is so fucked up.) But for the most part people stay within their own taxonomic families.

Then there's my "oh fuck it all" universe where furries are a man-made creation. They're all the same species so they can all interbreed, and the genetic differences (wolves, foxes, deer etc.) are purely "extra bits" tacked on by the scientists. Though some groups in this universe believe in keeping certain bloodlines pure, cross-breeding is unavoidable and widely accepted.

My character is a dog (English Springer Spaniel) and her husband is a dog, too (Shetland Sheepdog/English Setter mix). Buuuuuuuut... they aren't having kids. XD Plus, the husband is schizotypal, among a myriad of other mental disorders (and really, my character has that, too), so yeah. Probably a good thing they aren't planning on kids. :3

The parents-in-law have a kid, though, and they're all dogs! \o/

In my other stories, species can only mate (I hate that word so much) with their own kind, such as others posted above. Also, reptiles and birds are never anthropomorphic in my stories. Only mammals. Now, anyone can pair up and marry any species they like, but they won't be able to produce offspring unless they are the same species. Felines with felines, canines with canines, etc.

isn't that why there are so many hybrids i mean yes there are a lot of single species's furries but there are still a LOT of chimera's

You have to remember in a world of furries, you will have many that will only mate with their own kind. Only a small number will mate outside of their own kind and create something new.

Really? Have you seen half of the artwork on FA?

I have been seeing furry art far before there was a FA. Believe me, when I say we are only seeing the tip of the furries. Many still do go for their own kind, but have no problem playing around with the others.
