Not sure how soon this will go into effect, but I'm very excited about this. Sure, I don't have a same-sex partner, but the new rules will help more than just homosexuals. If a person has no family or hates their family, a close trusted friend can have visitation rights and even help make medical decisions if the person is incapacitated. Many people have friends who have been closer than family for more than 20 years!
As one saying goes, friends are the family that you choose.
