I don't use McAffee, so I've no idea what that is. I've got the default thing that came with Vista, but apparently the subscription lapsed, so I had to renew it. D:

get AVG. its free, gets regular updates and the only thing it cant do is stop stupidity. i have it, never had a problem since....(at least on its part. I opened an e-mail that contained a trojan. it blew up my hard drive)

I really like the system that I have. The only reason it failed me was because the subscription lapsed. I just sprung for "lifetime" protection, though, so now it's doing its thing.

Antispyware Soft, actually. It's pretty good. This is the only issue we've had, and I got the computer back in 07.

yea i know what you mean. That trojan ruined my gaming comp hard drive. figures the one time i use the game comp for and e-mail i get hit. ah well. you wouldnt happen to know where i can get a cheap hard drive would you?

TigerDirect. It's where we get most of our gear.

The computer I'm on now is actually the first computer we've ever had that wasn't bought from there, because I wanted to be able to build it myself, and you can't really do that with Tiger.

But you can get cheap refurbished computers there, which we've done a few times with no problems at all.

If you do get something else, (and getting more than one AV program is a good idea, sometimes one will miss things) don't get AVG or McAffee. They suck.

Go for Malware Bytes. It has no active protection feature, so it won't block viruses if you go and get yourself one, but it's got one of the best scans out there. Also, free.

I typically use a combo of Spybot and Malwarebytes, and have yet to encounter any problem.

As for bug detection (talking about actual viruses, not malware and the like), in my personal experience AVG has the highest detection rate of any AV program I've used in the last fifteen years. Plus, it's so lightweight that you don't even notice a performance hit until it actually runs a scheduled scan. You can fully automate it, so you don't have to lift a finger to do anything, unless you get the itch for a manual scan.
