Foreign Films: Yes or No?
15 years ago
I dig foreign movies. Foreign horror is often pretty rad (REC is one of my favorite movies), and I've always been a sucker for Japanese monster movies. Kaiju eiga in the house, what what holla.
Well, today I found The Orphanage with an outrageous discount and decided to buy it. While I was checking out, the cashier kinda... stopped me and said, "You do know this is in Spanish, right?"
I told him it was no big deal, a good movie is a good movie and subtitles aren't that big of a deal. He shrugged and said, "Well, I don't see how you can stand not knowing what they're saying, but it's your money."
Which, you know, people have their own tastes. If you don't like it, you don't like it. If you do, you do. Some people have pet peeves, and I guess reading subtitles or dealing with horrendous dubs might push some people's rage button.
I'm just curious. How many of you dislike foreign films? Or like them for that matter? Do subtitles bother you? What about horrible English dub-overs (which, in my opinion, make Godzilla movies BETTER)?
Also, I know I ask a lot of questions, ahahaha, but I like to talk and get people actually talking back. X3

I hate english dub overs -- more often than not, the english actors really don't feel for the character at all and it shows, especially in dramatic scenes where they sound like they don't give a shit rofl -- so if i have access tot hemovie in its original language, that'll be what i watch.
And aaaahaha, my mom used to get like that too. She'd be doing something and trying to listen, and every five seconds, "WHAT? WHAT? UGH, CAN'T YOU WATCH IT IN ENGLISH?!"
Then I made her watch the Spanish version of the 1931 Dracula, and she never complained again. XD
BRB SEARCHING FOR PLACE TO GET IT.
Planning on getting it reconnected sometime in the future. If I do, it better still be playing. Or I will cry. ;n;
We've got the DVD lying around here somewhere now.
I mean, sometimes a dub can be good (yeah, I'm talking about anime as well as movies here), but more often than not, the original (voice) actors were chosen for their roles for a reason, y'know?
Anyway, speaking of foreign films, my favorite non-anime thing has to be Pan's Labyrinth. o3o
UGH SHUTTING UP NOW.
BUT, sometimes you run across a movie like The Killing of Satan and English is mandatory. Speaking of which, if I ever find that movie you and Katherine are watching it. Ahahahaha. |3
And ffff. Pan's Labyrinth. The Orphanage is actually directed by the same guy. :D
And yes, sometimes English is mandatory for BAD MOVIE reasons. XD (Or in some cases they're actually better, like in Pokemon. Seriously, James's voice actor in that is dull, and that's...just wrong. =|)
Have you actually seen Pan's Labyrinth? 8D
Thathandmonsterugh.
I just watched one recently with some friends and I'll tell you right now, I've never screamed in my life but MY GOD this movie

And, yeah, I get the "OMG I CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU" thing. I used to watch television with closed caption on and I turn subtitles on most English movies because I get sick of having to backtrack on DVDs or whatever, trying to figure out what I missed. I have a miserable time hearing. X_X
Also afhjkdhgdhgkj, I now need to put that on the list of movies I need to see. Because it actually looks good, and that's a rarity anymore. ;n;
I'm excited for his version of The Hobbit.
