I hope everyone's done harping over the last Rachel sketch. Looking over it again, I can see some cause for alarm. It's a more detailed sketch than I realized after throwing it up. Because it didn't contain anything I don't normally draw, I actually breezed through it in quick time. So what may look like a lot of "heart and soul" poured into a hate-piece, was really a way to fill up some time between tasks during the day.
I didn't expect to reap over 500 comments. :3
But I know why it was shocking to some. I sort of understand the appeal of Rachel from a "girl who'll do anything" standpoint, but she really was ugly to me, which is why I never revisited her. Women like that don't really gun my engine, to be honest. That's why the last time I wrote about a woman like that (Sissy in "Rumors"), I did it from the standpoint of teenage rumors, instead of actual events. Red Riding Hood's complete conversion is the closest I will come to that line, I think. The adoption of one new kind of life while discarding the other, instead of backstabbing as a lifestyle.

Getting comments on FA from Shawntae is like being an adult alone in the house when someone else's kid loads his diaper. You sigh and get the handiwipes and powder. You can't reason with it. It's a turd. You can't "discuss" it into being a sweater. It is what it is. And it stinks. It can't be ignored. It has to be dealt with by an adult.
There's a special place in my heart for him. It'll always be there, reminding me of the difference between those who think other's opinions are crucial to their well-being, and me.

i like your work, i really do. you are one of my idols, and i read your comics everyday almost, but i guess when you did that, people got kinda thrown off.

Face it; in all honesty a Character's creator; by definition; decides where, how, and why of each of their creations lives, acts and/or dies.
Then again; it's totally your prerogative to unwatch said artist, and hold a single-man candlelight vigil for the departed memory of said character.
Don't take this as meaning you are 'in trouble' for your actions or some such retarded nonsense; just think things through a little more. Unless; of course; you were one of the unwashed masses that didn't get the underlying reason for said image; and were constantly bombarding him with requests that shall thenceforth be denied.
Also; you can sympathize with how she lost Tommy? ... You're saying you've tried to force a nice, upstanding guy into marrying you while screwing around on the side; denying him intimate attention; and then getting on his case when he tries to leave because it was inconvenient?? She lost Tommy due to her own actions; so technically, she didn't lose him so much as arbitrarily give him up.
Like I said in a few other comments, people like this guy have a serious detachment on reality. Have you ever seen the Cynder and Renamon zealots? Now THOSE are fuckin' scary. In a very sad, pathetic way. XD
Sadly; I hadn't heard of Cynder until just now, probably because my copy of Spyro 2 was massively damaged; and as such was unable to play it; and thus continue my interest in the series...
To be fair; I'm a Renamon fan. FAN. Not OMGMUSTSCREWTHELIFEOUTOFHERBECAUSETHATSALLSHEWASEVERDRAWNFOR... *knows at least 300 people who are exactly like that* FAN.
I like her (well, technically; It's) character design; and overall original personality profile. I understand fully that she is a fictional character...unlike so many that just seem to... wow; on second thought; there's such a huge amount I could rant on about that I'll leave that be. Oh wait; you put it very succinctly: "THOSE are fuckin' scary. In a very sad, pathetic way. XD" Indeed.
And yeah regardless of the character, when people get THAT worked up over a character that ISN'T real, those kinds of people need psychological help. =/

It is we; the group who understands reality, restraint, and sanity, that I feel are the 'true' backbone here. Meaning; obviously; that we are the necessary few; without which they would just land on each other as a scary pile of fur and twisted dreams; which would either be swept off the streets; or ooze into a sewer somewhere to rot... Nah; I've gotten to know a lot of trolls; and you are quite different. You construct your argument with a solid foundation; and you choose your words carefully (something that I kinda admire, actually ^^). But of course, drama is drama is drama. A little drama now and again is a nice distraction; but definitely not something I'd wanna have to dive into every day ... jeez.

Either way, Rachel was a character you intended her to be, a total hoe bag. Some people are turned on by the drug addicted and pregnant whores who'll do anything for a $5 bill. It's sexuality, ya really can't explain it all with logic. And the way you ended the character was very much along the lines of what would be expected of a girl like her.
Honestly, comments like "You're characters are as deep as a puddle" is not a critique, it's intentional badgering, the user who posted that may try to hide behind criticism but anyone with a functioning brain knew the users intentions were not positive.
Not to mention Rachel seemed like she could lick a mean butthole.
I mean, you can do it if you want, she is her character, kill her off if you like.
Just saying that if I would've done it, I would've chosen a less spectacular (and less squickish) way, like a simple bullet to the head instead of killing a pregnant woman and let her filthy, cum soaked drug filled corpse lie on a toilet. Since she doesn't really deserve such a dramatic and uprising death as such a shallow character, even as someone you wanna hate.
Yes, he doesn't like the character, but it still has fans. And just forthe fact that they're fans of a character HE made and that HE hates and that HE posted more porn of her then of all other of his chars because she is the easiest to sell character, sold to those fans, he now punsihes them?

And I know wallowing in one's own self-indulgent indignation is fun and all, but try--for just a second--to understand it from Fisk's perspective. He makes this character to fit a specific role for a specific story, and it's the sort of person he HATES. But he makes the character, because it's pivotal to the story. He humors the 'fans' a bit more, makes a two short pay-to-view comics to tie up loose ends, and then gratefully washes his hands of her. The demand increases again and he has ZERO desire to deal with this character again.
Whether he meant it as a punishment or not, I think those that get their panties in a bunch over a drawing of a FICTIONAL whore-rabbit ODing on drugs after getting gang-banged are deserving of their reactions if they ACTUALLY get worked up over something so stupid.

That made me laugh more than it should. I never really understood the appeal of Extinctioners, furry nerds go crazy over that shit but it's just so bad. I don't understand why he's so butthurt all the time, I remember he censored a porn pic for attention and wrote these big multi-paragraph replies to everybody, it's just...what.
Some of the points I do have to agree with though, Rachel was one of the only standout characters that didn't rely on her man for everything. She wanted dick, she went out and got it. She wanted a tongue up her ass, she got it. With Lucy or one of the other girls, it's almost like they're joined at the hip with their boyfriends. So really instead of being two characters, the "couple" is a character in and of itself. Split them up and they're not as interesting or compelling as someone who has a broader and richer storyline, like Rachel. But yeah man he's just doing it to fuck with you.
My opinion? She's YOUR character, you can do what you like with her. A lot of people, I'm sure, liked her because she was a vessel for easy sexual stories, and most of the people (not all, but pretty much most) on FA are porn-mongers.

TL;DR - Just because someone with a connection to a character is sad now, doesn't mean they will be later. Let him have his few days of sadness.
I ask this only because my own Character; Kage Kitsune, grew from his particular RP into my Fursona; and his lover's character quit and killed her off. I will never forget the RP,and time we shared; and every so often I do kind of reminisce, as out RP sessions were very fun ^^. But now that her character has gone; I have since incorporated that loss into his backstory; essentially fusing her memory into his history; and as such, giving him more dimension.
By no means am I trying to gripe; I was just curious if it was a make-or-break portion of that particular RP.
Would have been neat to have met ya back then; when I used to be in the old CrossOver RP (Which is still on hiatus; but may return)

The big reason I thought you might have drawn it from people you knew was because that's what a lot of authors and artists do, and your characters are as lifelike as the best author's and artist's characters. More so, often times. So... it just seems like you would have drawn inspiration from people you knew. Sorry for the wrong presumption.

As for the Rachel fans, if you want to stare at some slut chick all day and that's your main reason for watching someone, there's one or more of three things going on. 1) you're a forty some year fatass virgin who's too damn lazy to do anything but live with their mom and jack off, 2) You think of women as toys and your only purpose of looking at them is to find the ones that are easy (Aka, Rachel) and contemplate how you'd fuck them over and over again before leaving, or 3) You're exactly like Rachel's character and think that you can relate to Rachel. In any of these three cases, it's kind of important to get the hell over it and move on with your life.

Thankfully; this nifty thing in my head, known as a BRAIN; which allows this neat sensation called FREE THINKING; lead me to read Better Days and become a solid Naylor Fan; much to the chagrin of the ignorant.

One of the main reasons I loved Better Days was that it had such a perfect way of describing life as it was in the 80s and 90s; complete with all the little details; levels of personal respect; and the sheer depth of the characters' dynamic personalities. I could be wrong about the analogies to the time period; but it was a nice trek back into my own past; remembering the lessons learned and the values of those days.
Personally; Fisk became my hero back when he took up the baseball bat and defended his mother. He did what he had to do to protect his own; and THAT; above all else; earned the lion's share of my respect for his character.
I know what you mean, in terms of the depth of the story and character. I think Beth is and always has been my favorite character... it's my personal opinion that Beth and Fisk should have ended up together, especially after that scene in the cafe where she said she would be willing to deal with him traveling, and pretty much proposed going steady. That scene really touched me... I was a touch disappointed when he chose Elizabeth, but hey. That's the way the cookie crumbles, and I've developed a sense of respect for each and every character as they progress, except the ones that warranted no respect, like Rachel.
Have you read his other story; about sailing and all that? I devoured it myself; up until it kinda went on hiatus; and then seems to have disappeared from his site.
I never did read the sailing one... honestly, I'm so busy with school that I tend to hop on the computer, fave a few things on FA, then drop into Original Life to see the new page before I"m off running again.
And I understand being WAY too busy all too well. It was very ambitious; and very entertaining; it sucked me in almost as fast as Better Days. I'd love to read it if it ever continued... ^^
But really, it doesn't bug me a lot- pretty much in-character for her!

... well, if you're into necrophilia, drugs, cutting, and the abuse and exploitation of fictional rabbit girls, it would be a turn-on for you. But at that point you may want to consider getting help, inclinations towards that sort of thing are kind of... unhealthy.
I've noticed a lot of comments from people who seem to not have even really LOOKED at the picture, they just see a bunnygirl sprawled out on a toilet seat with fluids gushing out of her and think "ooh sexy" and completely miss the razorblade, syringe, bloody nose, and other telling details that it wasn't meant to fap to.
As far as Trolls go, they lose their power when you ignore them. I had one troll whom somehow got my phone number, tried upsetting me by saying allot of distasteful things. But yeah that's the same way I used to deal with bullies and cliques in high school - they'd start making fun of me for whatever and I'd laugh right along with them and suggest other things they could make fun of about me too, and it really made them lose enough steam to stop because I wasn't getting angry and that's what they wanted.
I handle internet trolling the same way though I don't get much of it myself. It's really the best method IMO.

Seriously though, furries are lovers if minutiae. Think about how much crap in the fandom centers around Minerva Mink or Lt. M'Ress, both characters so minor that they don't even appear on the box art of the DVD release of the show. Think about the innumerable piles of Sonic fan-fiction. Think about how furries spend hours and hours putting crappy, irrelevant details onto already over-designed characters whose personal history is more convoluted and nonsensical than that of Solid Snake.
I guess the same sort of mental error that makes one predisposed to be a furry also makes one latch onto the irrelevant with peculiar firmness.
In the end you just gain more popularity and reputition, no matter if the attention is positive or negative, it's publicity.

Come on. everyone have a motive to everything they do. While you did it for the right reason some will question why you made her in the begining. Trust me I been riddled with questions of why I made a certain character and rarely draw her at all.
And I'm generally guessing it got such a high amount since it was a somewhat radical and "fresh" thing to do, t'was sumit ya normally didn't draw.
Personally I think it was a kinda "funny" picture, it was just so different from the usual, and a rather good "stop asking for more porn with her dammit!".

Good god, storytelling is about making the audience put pieces together. Jay doesn't have to show you EVERYTHING for the story to work. Letting your mind do the work allows for a more fulfilling immersive experience. Personally, I find not having closure for her character other than the snapshots of her life (like the one with her mixed brood in tow) much more interesting, because it reflects how in my life I know some people that have kinda fallen out of my view, but I can tell even from a periphery what actually happened to them (things like suddenly seeing them with a baby before they graduate high school and such). I don't need to know the details, I can fill in the blanks myself. BECAUSE I HAVE A BRAIN THAT ACTUALLY PROCESSES INFORMATION.
Here is a brief analysis for you all...
If he has to tell us EVERYTHING he is doing it wrong. If he can tell most of the story in a few pictures with tidbits of info, he is doing it right. ie. Showing Rachel with mixed pups means she still sleeps around everywhere, and she has another in the oven already. The kids seemed to act like brats, so she probably isn't that great a parent. Her glazed over expression shows weariness with a whole life that she has picked (and you could possibly say that she blames Tommy for it all, because he dumped her and he was her "happy ending" scenario.)
Then you take the current Rachel picture, she is using every drug imaginable, literally has a whore jar right in there, is in a bathroom stall, looks literally to be f***ed to death. Putting the pieces together, her life went down the tubes completely, and it is evident that NOTHING has changed for her. WHICH HAPPENS A LOT IN REAL LIFE. In fact, more often then not people DON'T change... Artists write and draw redemption stories because it feels good, because it doesn't happen often, and that is why we celebrate it all the more when it does. Jay obviously prefers to not sugarcoat everything, except of course his core characters.
I'll end my rant there, because I doubt anyone will read this, or those that OUGHT to will likely not change from it, because, as I stated, people don't change. Often. We can hope. Yup.
Though I'm reminded of this part of 8-Bit Theater. Guy gets cloned due to timeline screwery. One clone gets killed, other is stoned. People come up with a myriad of ways to bring him back. White Mage ends up deciding to rez the guy already. Unfortunately, the top of the statue got eroded away over time...so all that happened was he went living fountain. The comic title? "Okay, you can shut up now."
You show a girl who's pregnant dead on some gas station toilet and it looks like she was raped to death. Get a woman being raped and killed, and especially when that woman's pregnant, and you'll have the feminists and the white knights out in full force. They might have not noticed the needles lying around her, and even then I would be uncertain to whether she died of an overdose, or if she was raped to death, or both.
Still, it's a pretty shitty way to go.
Which is a pretty accurate perception of his position- so there's not a lot to argue about. Anybody who insists on considering every person to be (at least potentially) a beautiful and unique snowflake, really kinda picked the wrong artist. Some people (Tom Clancy comes to mind also) do seriously believe there are people who just plain ought to be killed in the most sordid, prompt manner possible. You don't really change that attitude by crying about it, doing so just tends to lump you into the category of 'ought to be killed'.
Now, what gets really interesting is the way each person maintains their own list of double-headshot-worthy-unpeople. Some refuse to ever add anyone to such a list, others seem to have pages and pages of entries. When you're a creator, you get to act on such notions with quite a bit more freedom than people are usually offered :)
I'm actually not aware of anybody in the Naylorverse who's in that category and still 'alive' at this point- various pimps etc have been killed, and now with Rachel, I'm not sure there's anyone left. It's not arbitrary, it's the artistic indulgence of a moral position, like a statement that certain kinds of wrongness shouldn't be allowed to exist, and the decision that you can take responsibility over it. Once you're certain of that, it's just down to making the list.
What a pity. I will never understand why authors like you, like Jeremy bernal, or like Chochi, make these very strange decisions of killing elements (in your case) , not drawing sex or drawing few "cause it's difficult" (in Bernal's), or refusing to depict the most popular characters they have in sexual acts (in Chochi's, and I'm not referring to lovely pets) cause "I don't think it'd work" (that's what he told me) (...).
For my mind, is an strange choice even only for the business aspect when you do it for a living. And I am truly sure that Rachel was incredibly popular, cause a lot of people kept asking you to draw another story about her and cause even if someone likes to come here and say "Oh yeah I hated the way she behaved" cause she reminds them of the last girl they had cause they're stupid and just look at the mere beauty, the people like me who buy your porn comics LOVE this kind of girl.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED when you, in your sketchbook, depicted her hugging those two kids and them looking at her ass, I SWEAR I hoped for days that you one day could draw a story where she had sex with them ! REALLY ! I would have bought it the same second you had put it online ! For any price. And I'm not joking.
I'm happy for you cause this means you are so wealthy that you can even not care about killing one of your most pervert characters, but it hurts, Jay. Really.
And no. I'm not kidding. You're REALLY THE BEST FURRY WRITER-AUTHOR-ARTIST on the web, and maybe you don't notice, in your daily routine, but hundreds of people like me who follow you are deeply tied with your works, because, after all these years, they have become like PART OF THE LIFE.
I know you decide and I know I can do nothing to change it. But just drawing a sketch without even a short story to conclude it is just.....rude.

It's very sad. I FEEL sad. And always remember that it's us, the commotion-oriented idiots, the majority of who keeps buying all of your artwork without an esitation cause they depict the characters we have strong feelings with. Not the intellingent men that pass one time, see a character they like and buy just that story cause they like dogs.
I keep hoping. Even if you told the contrary. We're men. Humans. Our decisions might change during our lives. Maybe one day you'll decide to tell us what's before that end, and maybe (hopefully) in other adult projects. Or, more hopefully, that that end was a...premature decisions....
You're on a higher level than the other furry artists, Jay. You managed to make your characters REAL.
