BEFORE ANYTHING: GO INTO PERSONALIZE, SOUNDS, AND UNCHECK THE WINDOWS STARTUP SOUND.
Step one: Download this little goodie: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Progra.....e-Editor.shtml SAVE THIS TO A FLASH DRIVE, as you will need to run it on a different computer.
Step 2: Go into C:\Windows\System32 and find imageres.dll. Copy it to your desktop and save a second copy onto a flash drive.
Step 3: Take the audio file you want and convert it to wave format. If it's .wav and not .wave, go into DOS and enter rename (insert filepath here) 5080.wave, like this: rename C:\GTintro.wav 5080.wave. Then take this and copy it onto your flash drive.
(5080 is the startup sound for Windows 7 computers in US English)
ON A SECOND COMPUTER:
Step 4: Run XN Resource Editor, Open the imageres.dll file you copied, and click "Resources," then "Imput User Resource." Select your renamed sound file and insert it. Then, right-click on the "English (United States)" file and select "Delete Resource." Save the file. If you do this on Windows 7, it'll give you an Error 50. You could also dual-boot XP, if you have it.
Once you're done editing imageres.dll, take your flash drive to your Windows 7 powered rig.
Step 5 is tricky, and I'm not completely sure how I got it. You're going to need to change permissions, which Windows 7 is notoriously picky about. You'll find that only "trustedinstaller" can mess with System32 files. What you need to do is go into DOS and enter the takeown command, which is shown here:

You may need to change the permissions throught the GUI (right-click, properties, security):

Step 6: If you've done it right, you should be able to go into dos and rename the original imageres.dll to imageres.old, and copy your imageres file with your custom sound into the System32 folder. Trying to replace imageres without renaming it first will give you a permission denied error.
Step 7: Restart to save changes.
Step 8: Go into personalize and recheck the Windows startup sound.
Step 9: Restart again.
Step 10: If all is well, you should hear your custom sound. If not, go back and try again, or post here for help.

Mine now plays "Praise The Lord (Opium Of The Masses)" by Dying Fetus, with a fade-out after 15 seconds. It plays a little long, but holy crap...that's a brute force sound coming from a startup.
Thanks for the tip! I'd been trying to do this for what seems like forever. :D
