Argh! (also paypal advice?)
I've lost my tablet pen! I think my cleaners moved it -_-
I've been thinking about setting a paypal up this week and taking some $10 commissions but I obviously can't do anything until I find my bloody pen.
To anyone who uses paypal for part-time commission work, I have a few questions too:
-What account should I get?
-Does paypal have fees if you're only recieving small amounts of money?
-Does the customer need a paypal account? Is it easy for them to pay you?
any other tips or advice or things you've learned etc would be really great :3

And I beleive that the other person has to have a paypal too
can't I just say it's for clean art, and then note a naughty version through to my client?
IMO I've been using paypal since 04/05 and whereas you do need a client with paypal to pay - most actually have it. I have a "premier" account - as there are a few levels that have descriptions of what you'll be doing... ex: sending payments vs receiving payments and its rather straight forward.
The fees that are taken are menial, within the dollar range for small payments. These are taken off if you use their "bank card" feature as opposed to the credit card.. Again, this is all explained on paypal itself.
I just remembering hearing somewhere about an account being shut down cause it was used for adult commissions, but what paypal doesn't know can't hurt them!
There are now two types of categories for sending a payment: Purchase and Personal. Paypal does have fees for non-personal payments. While you can avoid the fees for asking people to pay under the personal category using a PayPal balance or bank account transfer (i.e. as a "gift", "payment owed", etc.), you really need to understand the risk you're taking. Personal payments CANNOT be disputed (I think; I'm having a hard time verifying this) and it is very against their Terms of Use to accept business payments like for commissions through the personal payment method. If you happen to get caught doing that, you risk losing your paypal account and possibly the money in it.
On the other hand, I've had a PayPal account for about 10 years now, I think, and I've had no problems.
I haven't used it in sooooooo long! ;<
Since you'll be selling your artwork by means of paypal, limit whatever descriptions you use to "commissioned artwork", or "commissioned illustration." If professional illustration is something you see as being a potential career for yourself, if only on a freelancing basis, then take advantage of paypals bank account services if they still have them. This will make it easier for you to keep track of expenses for business accounting purposes, and let you separate your job income, from your art income.
Best of luck to you.
Get the "Premier" account. I mean, seriously the other options (from what I remember) are for, either, big companies or dudes who are just buying stuff online.
-Does paypal have fees if you're only recieving small amounts of money?
Yes, they will at least take out 9% of every transaction. For instance. I took a commission for $5. When paypal took out their money, it was $4.55 or when I took a commission for $50. They left me with $48.25 which isn't that bad. At least, they are reliable for the most part.
-Does the customer need a paypal account? Is it easy for them to pay you?
Yes the customer will need a paypal account and no it isn't really hard for them. From what I remember (being a buyer and not a seller) I got the account, sent my stuff via the paypal option on amazon and "POOF" the internet buys my stuff. n__n
You will need to setup a separate e-mail (because being flooded in your personal e-mail by confirmation notices is annoying), unless you don't care.
Let me know if you need help. OH and I don't have money to send your box yet, but you are getting a shirt. <3
