Vampire lore and the goddess Sekhmet
Just another li'l piece of my stuff I've been building up for my comic I'm writing. The story is almost done and tied together quite neatly, thanks to Cesium helping me with story flow and some neat ideas (he's awesome and helped with my writer's block so much...you rock, man). So...I thought I'd make another post relevant to the vampires in it. My information journal about vampires and werewolves mentions some vampire creation lore...here it is!
Sekhmet
Vampires allegedly originated in ancient Egypt, where they worshiped Sekhmet, a fierce lioness goddess with a lust for violence and an insatiable thirst for the blood of her enemies. Curiously, she is a goddess aligned with the sun, representing specifically its harsh heat and fiery wrath. She is, however, considered to be the first vampire, embodying many of the traits that would be prominent in her children--her strength, her bloodlust, and her immortality.
The First Vampires
Sekhmet is believed to be the 'mother' of all vampires--she created them and thinks of them as her children. Like her, they were beings of war and destruction, thirsting for the blood of those they struck down, the blood becoming a necessity and their life force. Ra was very displeased with the creatures that Sekhmet had created, and as such did not allow them to walk in his sacred sunlight. Thus, vampires became creatures of the night, harmed by the sunlight.
From Then to Now
Since the sun goddess Sekhmet could no longer care for her night-walking children, she gave them the ability to care for themselves. The creatures they struck down, they could now make one of their own by showing their proper worship of the blood that was their life, the thirst their goddess had given them in image of herself. By drinking all of an individual's blood, they sated their goddess vicariously, and then placing a bit of the drained victim's blood into their mouth planted the seed of thirst--their corpse would rise with remembrance of the taste of blood and an eternal longing for it.
And there you have it, my vampire creation-myth...which isn't quite so much myth in actuality in my comicverse, but I won't say anymore to avoid giving some important plot points away. Hope you enjoyed this little bit of lore. I enjoyed coming up with it! My inspiration came from the actual ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, who seemed absolutely perfect for this.
