Let's get some DISCUSSION up in here
General
I've been watching a bunch of Disney movies lately.
So, what Disney movie is your fave? Which is your least favorite?
Keep in mind I'm talking about DISNEY here. For the sake of discussion, stuff by Dreamworks/Bluth/etc. doesn't count, nor does Studio Ghibli stuff, as awesome as it may be.
Speakin' of Disney movies, I was watching the Lion King the other day and noticed something that I've never noticed before, even though I've watched it a zillion times since I was like five years old. All throughout the first part, Scar has a dark gradient on his nose. But in every scene after Simba grows up, he has a light gradient, like his muzzle is going white with age. That is such an awesome detail!
TLK is my favorite Disney movie and one of my top favorite animated films in general. Kimba ripoff or not, it's beautifully done and you can tell that they just put so much heart into it (with little things like the aforementioned). It's the first movie I remember going to see in the theater. And while most things from your childhood lose their magic as you grow up, TLK just keeps getting better for me.
My least favorite? Fuckin' Snow White. And don't try to tell me "but it was the first full-length animated movie ever, it was groundbreaking, how can you hate that?" Just because it was the first doesn't mean it was good! It's like trying to pass off your refrigerator art from kindergarten as a timeless masterpiece. And her singing is SO ANNOYING. XD

Least favorite: Mulan 2. I mean....it was horrid. I blocked most of it out.
....most of the non-pixar sequel movies I HATE WITH PASSION THAT BURNS :<
and lilo and stitch is
and Lilo and Stitch just
is perfect
I can't believe you've never seen it!! Go watch it right now.
And of course, I agree, TLK gets better as you get older.
Least Favourite: ...sleeping beauty? little mermaid? Not sure.
I love Mulan because it's about a girl who dresses up and acts like a dude for a long period of time. I'm transsexual (FtM), so this is a natural for me. XD I also love TLK, but who doesn't in this fandom. I generally dislike the more girly movies. I was disappointed when the beast turned into a human in Beauty and the Beast. :x
And I was pretty disappointed when the Beast became a human again, too. I mean, obviously they're not gonna have some creepy bestiality thing going on in a kid's movie, but he turns back and then... oh, just another generic hunky prince. Yawn.
Close call between Robin Hood, Beauty and the Beast, and the Rescuers.
I don't know which one I hate the most though, I try to forget bad movies. xD
Both The Rescuers films but Down Under moreso because of Marahute. I'd rewind and watch those scenes time and time again.
Cinderalla because although Maleficent was scary, I loved her. And Diablo.
The Little Mermaid mostly because of Flotsam and Jetsam and Ursula.
Though the overriding reason is because my Grandad loves Disney, and watching all these movies with him or at my grandparent's house was something I remember dearly and will always treasure.
Rescuers Down Under is awesome, and yeah, that scene where Cody is first flying with Marahute is AWESOME.
Ursula is the only thing that makes Little Mermaid tolerable for me. BODY LANGUAGE! XD
Aw, yeah, watching a movie in a certain place or with a certain person can be just as memorable (if not more) as the movie itself.
I should've realised that XD They were talking about Cinderalla in an IRC I frequent.
I also didn't list a few more that I probably should have, like Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Saw you were talking about Bambi lower down, I've heard the original book is far better than the movie.
And yeah, it does. Especially right now.
Favorite one is hard to say. Have to think which makes me emotional still...wasn't where the Red Fern Grows done by Disney cause that still makes me cry.
Least Favorite: Bambi. It's a deer that loses his mom and then suddenly is grown up with no in between or reason to connect with him. Boring as hell; at least the Princess movies have a coherent plot.
Yeah, Bambi is kind of... ehh. There's nothing I really like about it, except for the mistake you can see near the end where a mother raccoon is grooming her baby and it suddenly disappears! XD
Bambi is "lookit the cwute ikkle baby aminals! OH NO HIS MOM DIED WELLP LET'S WRAP THIS UP WITH A FOREST FIRE"
also LOL wow I forgot about that mistake XD
The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Aristocats are my current favorites, but I'm hard pressed to find one I don't like.
My least favorite would have to be 101 Dalmatians. I dunno why though. :/
On a separate tangent, everybody should check out some Disney songs in different languages. "Bippitty Boppitty Boo" in Russian is pretty great. :D
I really dislike the new sequels. :<
I only ever saw Tron once and I barely remember anything from it, I wasn't paying much attention to the screen. XD
Least Favorite: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
Hmmm.. also quite fond of The Little Mermaid and Hercules
Least favourites... well, ALL the sequels XD Hated snow white too..
And wow, I actually opened TLK and flicked through it to look at Scar's muzzle after reading your journal :P
Beauty and the Beast is another favorite. I love Belle. I like how she wasn't one of those dimwitted girls (apart from Jasmine) who started OUT as a princess. And Beast. I absolutely love him. His design, his character. The music was wonderful, too.
TLK is always going to be a favorite, and an inspiration. Even the sequels weren't bad!
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is another favorite. Frollo is the only Disney villian that gives me with creeps, even though I really like him. And I adored the music.
Other favorite movies are Mulan, The Emperor's New Groove, Bambi, and Pinocchio.
Those are only a few, though. I'm such a Disney person. xD
I miss the old Disney movies..
Beauty and the Beast is pretty great. I didn't like it much as a kid only because I thought the human-based stories were way more boring than the talking animal ones, but Belle is a really refreshing character. And oh yes the music <3 I use antlers in all of my deeeeecorating
I said before in a reply to someone else that TLK2 is actually pretty good. I like it better than a lot of non-sequel Disney films. I only ever watched a little bit of TLK1/2 and didn't really like what I saw, but eh, it's not supposed to be a serious movie.
Hunchback is rapidly becoming one of my top favorites. I watched it just last night and now I've had the Hellfire song stuck in my head all day. XD The thing that makes Frollo such an excellent villain is that he's not mustache-twirling puppy-kicking evil, he genuinely believes that what he's doing is right. He is incredibly creepy, that scene where he sticks his nose in Esmeralda's hair just makes my skin crawl. D: Plus he has a bitchin' horse.
Mulan is a favorite of mine, too.
You know... I don't think I've ever been able to make it through ENG in one sitting. Either I fall asleep, or get bored and turn it off to do something else. I don't know WHY, because it's got plenty of funny moments and I do love me some ancient Mesoamerican culture, but I just cannot sit through it.
My mother and I actually had a talk about Frollo, and how priests back in the old day in some areas were very sexual and such (I forget the actually details pff). So when he does the sniff to Esmerelda, I get so uncomfortable. They made him so wonderfully devious and evil. And Hellfire.. I couldn't stop singing that for WEEKS.
As for non-animal related movies: I completely agree. Animal movies were alll the rage for me. I couldn't STAND watching non-animal one's. Lady and the Tramp was a favorite, before I watched it when it came out, and I cried, and actually felt sad watching it. The pound scene tears me apart, and how Lady goes through such various changes with her owners. Parts do give me goosebumps, though. Still a good movie, but, man. D:
I think I've seen ENG so many times, and I can quote almost everything, that I really get bored watching it. I think it's funny, but I can only watch it like, once a year. xD
It's not the flashiest Disney out there, I think the art style is even a little boring compared to some others (though still gorgeous, of course) but in terms of characters it's probably the best. Frollo's voice was so well-cast, too, and now whenever I hear Tony Jay in anything else I always associate it with HELLFIIIREEEE
Ursala was.. kind of funny to me, though I did like her character and song, and her voicing.
Frollo's shape always weirded me out, too. And the fact he wasn't part animal/fish, just human, like you said. He's just pure, wonderful villian. :3
Revenge can be an excellent motive, but in an otherwise dull movie it doesn't really add a lot to it.
Those centaurs are sooo sexy...
least favorites: little mermaid, snow white, and cinderella. ESPECIALLY cinderella. >:V
Least Favorite: The Princess and the Frog
Good GOD that movie was terrible :/ I was so happy that they were returning to 2D and they let me down big time. Also, I can't remember a single one of the songs. Main character had a stick up her ass, etc etc...just all around terrible.
Least Favorite: Again, can't decide. Perhaps either "Alice in Wonderland" or "The Great Mouse Detective". Two films that utterly bored me.
When I was small I already had a great affinity with water and the sea(creatures), I even had a barbie doll shaped like Ariël. :)
With detachable tail and everything. <3
And I don't know for sure if it's a Disney production, but 'Wind in the Willows' was also made as an old animation movie, with a toad and such.
I remember being scared by the freaky eyes the toad sometimes had when he was going crazy.
Really liked that film too. :)
Little Mermaid is definitely NOT one of my favorites, though it makes sense that you would like it so much given your love for sea creatures :)
Oh, and I liked Sorcerer's Apprentice for the pure fact that my friend & boyfriend play bassoon and I wanted to learn to play it. It's the first solo I remember my friend ever having played (obviously it's a full piece, but it's also a solo I believe...or she just made it one?). Although watching it is pretty boring to me, I do have to admit that. It goes along with what I said earlier. I don't dislike it, but I really don't mind if we (whoever I'm with and I) skip it or just listen to the music while doing something else...
I can't believe no one has mentioned either of them yet. Yea Snow White isn't good but thous 2 are worst. I mean at lest Snow White has an excuse people didn't know what the hell they were doing. There is no excuse for either of these 2 movies.
Favs: Emperor's New Grove/Aladdin
Emperor's New Grove cus god damn it's hilarious honestly probably one of the funniest Disney movies I've ever watched. Aladdin because I rather liked it a lot as a kid and was an avid watcher of the TV series that followed it.
I remember the old Aladdin TV series! Good times. :D
Also I hated how all the main character dinosaurs looked like my friends dad: all long in the face and tight lipped.
hahahaha
As for my favorite, I'd probably have to go with The Emporer's New Groove. John Goodman and David Spade in a movie together - Awesome. I also really enjoyed Sleeping Beauty because it's artistically amazing. Plus the fairies remind me of my aunts with how they act. :D
My least favorite would probably be Robin Hood. Why? It's so cliche, the animation is scratchy, and this whole fandom made me realize it's kinda creepy.
I'd list Tron and certain Pixar films as some of my favorite Disney films, but they aren't technically Disney so that's not fair.
Sleeping Beauty is better, and it does have a really unique and appealing art style, but it still kind of bores me. Most of the Disneys based on old fairy tales are dull because the characters never really get developed much, it's all just "OMG A CUTE PRINCE!"
Holy shit, Aladdin was meant to be a direct-to-video release? I never knew that! I can't remember if I went to see it in the theater or not, but wow. That's crazy. I still like Aladdin a lot, even though I've been kind of soured ever since I learned how much of Jafar's character was ripped from Zigzag in The Thief and the Cobbler.
Holy crap. I never realized that until now. Wow. It all makes sense now. >_<
(And I have to admit, I did enjoy the poor chewtoy Nuka in the sequel...not much else, though.)
Rescuers Down Under gets a special mention not only as a bird lover, but if I remember correctly it is the first movie done with CAPS and it is easily still one of the most VISUALLY BEAUTIFUL movies they've done with it, period, the end. And again: MARAHUTE.
Least favourite: Bambi. I saw it back when I was waaaaaaaaaay little, but totally forgot, but I always heard the jokes about "BUMBI'S MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" (one of my favourite Animaniacs segments ever, btw) and figured it must be OH SO SAD. Actually, no! It's OH SO BORING! I can't get myself to CARE about any of them! Of course, cutting to happy birds in a stream right after his mom's death and having him all growed up then may not have helped....
There are a LOT of things about how L&S was made that I would've hoped Disney would've learned from, but oh well. (The story being handled by the SAME STORY TEAM DURING THE WHOLE PRODUCTION? Why, that may JUST KEEP THE ORIGINAL GOAL OF THE STORY INTACT! Among other things!)
I also liked Emperor's New Groove. I find it hilarious that Disney was going to make one movie but ended up scrapping it and taking the pieces to make Emperor's New Groove and Atlantis. I thought Atlantis was weak (I liked the imagery and the secondary characters, but all else...way weak) but the pieces they used to make Emperor's New Groove into a totally un-Disney comedy movie? AWESOME! Talk about a step in the right direction I wish they would have stuck to. It was happy accident I'd say!
I personally LOVE Atlantis and think it's rather underrated, I remember it taking SO long to come out on video after its theater debut and I was afraid they'd never release it. D:
I said in an earlier reply that I can't watch ENG all the way through without getting bored or falling asleep, but it's been a while, I think I need to give it another chance.
The other characters... ehh. Simba suddenly became a huge asshole, Kiara is a dumb bimbo, Kovu and Zira are just rehashes of Scar, Nala went from being a badass in the first movie to having all the personality of a rock, Timon and Pumbaa are the same old comic relief.
Oh, god, and the cringeworthy "UPENDI MEANS WUV HURR" line. ugh.
But in spite of all that, I still do enjoy it. It has really good songs for a sequel film, especially One of Us, oh god that song gives me chills.
CAPS? I'm assuming that stands for Computer Assisted something-or-other or something else having to do with CGI? It really shows on some of the buildings, but it's still a really beautiful movie, and so many awesome Australian critters :D And yes. MARAHUTE.
LOL oh god I miss Animaniacs.
I liked TLK2. I hated Kiara though. Also..Kovu was supposed to be Scar's son but Disney changed it b/c omg INCEST and it made the story way disjointed as a result :/
I honestly just often see TLK2 as a LOT of wasted potential. They could've done some really great things with the base ideas they had! Oh, who knows.
CAPS is generally what replaced cels. The Little Mermaid was the last film that used actual physical cels. I make note of the CAPS specifically because...well, I've seen it used REALLY BADLY. I mean, to the point where it looks like they used dodge-and-burn instead. The buildings were probably done more similarly to, say, the clock in The Great Mouse Detective.
As for Austalian critters, I have to admit I was sad as a wee little 'un that you only got spare glimpses of the platypus. But that's just me and my love for semi-aquatic egg laying mammals. XD
Yeah, they had so much they could have done with it, they had one of the best movies ever to use as a foundation.
One of the things I loved most about Rescuers Down Under was just all the creatures in the background! Like the FAT LITTLE MULTICOLORED WOMBATS OMFG
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leiPvxuNop4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POiuesibKH4 (If they could only keep ONE THING...I wish they kept this)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoctlRyGdf8 (I can understand why they cut this, I can hear the parents screaming now...)
That third one... holy shit. That was absolutely chilling.
The last one was way creepy.
I wish they left both of those in! The first one, eeeh don't care.
...Although it does remind me of my theory of how Scar got his...well, Scar. "BAWW NO ONE LOVES ME EVERYONE LOVES MUFASA!" *gives himself the cut with his claw* "NOW SEE YOU MUST NOW CALL ME SCAR TO REMIND YOURSELVES OF WHAT I DID DUE TO MY LACK OF LOOOOOOOOVE" or something.
(This theory is also applicable to Anakin Skywalker's scar in Episode III. Yeah, yeah, Clone Wars cartoon, but I like the self-given emo scar theory better. :| )
And Nuka's already got the goth black eyeliner and everything. XD
I can see Scar injuring himself to try and make it look like Mufasa did it, or something like that. They never gave a solid reason for the scar, did they? I know there's a story about it out there but the canon is questionable.
oh man, don't even get me started on the Star Wars prequels.
But from what I remember I fuckin love the Lion King, liked Mulan and Beauty and the Beast.
I could never get through the Black Cauldron tho...
Yeah, Black Cauldron is a weird movie. It's so gritty and gloomy and it feels so LONG.
The Book of 3 and The Black Cauldron are excellent books as is the rest of the sires (I loved those books growing up). The Chronicles of Prydain would make great movies if they were done right.
The Lion King
Bolt
Fox and the Hound
Brother Bear
Oliver & Company
Aristocats
Least Faves: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White.
I am glad Snow White is the most commonly disliked movie in this thread so far. I loathe it so much >:c
most of the early princess movies are just so... boring.
As for least favorite, I'll just be cheap and say every straight-to-video sequel that was ever made. XD Seriously, the message they used has been told many times in many forms. There are a few exceptions such as Toy Story 2 and The Rescuers Down Under. Speaking of which, I absolutely could not stand The Rescuers. I'm sorry, but the late John Candy won me over in the sequel. =D
Some of my faves are..
Jungle Book (my favorite as a baby, or so I hear)
TLK
Aladdin (I remember this & tlk in theatres.)
Fox & the Hound (Used to watch this all the time as well.)
Lilo & Stitch (I liked that the characters had curves...)
I'm sure I'm missing loads. I need to watch Hunchback of Notredame or w/e again... It was a good movie from what I can remember, but I've only seen it once so I don't remember much!
My least favorites have to be Alice in Wonderland, Little Mermaid (it was my sis's fave so I had to watch it over and over, till it killed it for me), hmm, a lot of the princess movies. I was Belle for Halloween once though.
Or we'll have some gratuitous bathroom humor thrown in for the kiddies.
That said, I do own Lilo and Stitch. I love it that much. Everything is cute and squishy... yet also filled with explosions and sibling rivalry. It's adorable, yet has enough bite to it so you don't die of cute.
For hate: Dumbo. It comes with Dumb in the title!
What's not to love about Alice? Mulan was a visual wonderland.
Faves: Robin Hood, Beauty & the Beast, Rescuers Down Under, Lion King, Brave Little Toaster
Least: The Jungle Book (ever since seeing as a child, I was outraged by what they did to Kipling's classic)
Hall of Shame:
Lilo & Stitch
-failed to live up to a year of the beat-ya-over-the-head hype from Disney
-had a really good idea behind it, with potential for more great character development & interaction that were utterly stomped on by the need for MARKETING MARKETING
I really need to get around to seeing Lilo & Stitch one of these days. :P
i love song of the south and pete's dragon.
lets see.. i love most of them, faves including brother bear, alantis, the lion king of course, loved monster's inc, hercules, tarzan, hunchback, and treasure planet!
least fave i would think would just be all those stoopid princess movies, they are not sequals but are like.. i dunno, spin offs of the princess movies. i never much cared for any of the princess movies, but loved maleficent!
