Hot -______- // RPG games help

General
I really really really really really really hate, despise, repulse, dislike, detest, scorn, etc~, hot weather Dx
I can't sleep with the suffocating warmness, not even my AC does much for it, since it's in the living room and not in our bedroom...
Also, I have been playing Magna carta 2, a lot.
I despise their GUI and I am very critical on how they dealt with the battle system, such potential but they didn't make it quite the way I would've enjoyed, mainly because of the horrible stamina bar system they have... I strongly prefer an attack speed system which allows more dynamism and a faster paced Real Time Action RPG, plus their AI is almost nonexistent.
I like the game so far though, a very good cliche, and the quests are not so horribly difficult and discouraging that would make you cry, plus they didn't discard the grinding factor like other games that make killing creatures so freaking pointless that you just evade those bad ass looking monsters and go on with your quests (BorderLands! DX!!!!)
I am looking for more research since it seems the developing team (Ruick, Mister B. "classmate", and I... lol) is inclining to make an RPG "attempt" with XNA (Microsoft Indie Games).
Any good or bad (yes, I need to see what to avoid) RPGs out there that would help in my research in your opinion?
I am looking for game titles for the PS2, Xbox 360, Wii.
Rpgs, any kind of battle system, no FFs, I played them all.
Thank you!~
Miss you Winter =[

Thank you Labster~
I will try to find the games in originals, since after all... I will be working as a game developer one day, I would like to support my market :p
Thank you though ^^
For more turn based shenanigans, perhaps Legend of Dragoon, where attacking was about building up a chain of attacks that an enemy could attempt to break, causing you to hit a different button to continue the combo in time.
Oh boy... Legend of Dragoon, I don't feel like playing that game ever again XD, those 4 discs were painful
Thank you for the input! I will take a look at grandia 2 anyways =]
While the battle system in those games are not innovated and new they do execute the whole turn based systems on a fine point. Nocturne and Digital are quite difficult though but off a ton.
Devil Summoner for Ps2 are also Megaten spin offs but are more on the action RPG style :3
-Star Ocean: Til the Ends of Time
-Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
-Atelier Iris 2?: The Azoth of Destiny
-Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm
-Ar Tonelico
-Ar Tonelico 2
-.hack//G.U.
-Arc The Lad
-Dragon Quest VIII (YANGUUUUUS)
-Grandia II (It was my favorite, but it's not a very good port unfortunately. D.)
-Mana Khemia
-Tales of the Abyss
-Wilds Arms 3
-XenoSaga? (Unsure about it)
For 360:
-Lost Odyssey
-The Last Remnant
-Phantasy Star Universe
-Fable II
-Fallout 3
-Resonance of Fate (I want to say this but I never got to play it. xD)
-Star Ocean: The Last Hope
I don't know any good RPGs for the Wii unfortunately though.
Hack was a great game, I love how they get to the dungeons and their simulation of an MMORPG is fantastic =]
I checked the last remnant, it was a little intimidating... but I will check it out a bit more.
Fable II fails for the exp trick =[, but it was such a nice game until I found that :P, a lot to learn from it though!
Fallout 3 has 20 lvls Dx!!! I would've loved that kind of game with more lvls... I mean, the world is huge!
Resonance of fate looks fantastic! I was checking it out last night, some reviews and what not, I am so gonna get that game :p
I will be checking all the games that I don't know yet, thank you a lot for your help ^^
Although, the main character annoyed the hell out of me because one, "HEY! LET'S KICK SOME A!"
Two:
David Nassau: "You may call me David."
Rush Sykes: "Hey Dave! .D"
Everyone else: "UARGH!! NO RESPECT!!" Seriously.
The battle system is a little easier to get around than it lets on. Unfortunately, since there are so many people are on the stage at once, you will need to install that game.
Fable II... Wait, there was a trick?!
FO3, twenty levels yes. xD But SUPER challenging. So much to explore. But you gain 10 more levels if you get the expansions.
I advise you start looking into the Project GUST games 'cause they're actually made so brilliantly. Especially that of Ar Tonelico, which has its own unique language, known as "Hymmnos." Beautiful beautiful music. I bought it for my boyfriend, and he loved it. Here's a song from the game.
if you don't know the EXP trick, then FORGET ABOUT IT! it ruins the game and they beautiful customization system...
I dig the style of Ar Tonelico, I love chibi looking characters, take me back to star ocean 1 =]
Thanks again Alto!
Anyway, on ps3 things get a bit more interesting, especially if you're in the mood to give something a bit less traditional a try.
Action RPG are one of the strong points of the system. I'm talking about Demon's Souls mostly, but if you're in for some multiplayer you could give White Knight Chronicles a try! And don't forget about the strategy games, like Valkyria Chronicles (probably one of the best things on the system) and the good 'ol Disgaea.
But truth be told, out of the three home comnsoles, Wii is the one you want to play if you're looking for the good rpgs. There are some very nice FF crystal chronicles, Tales of Symphonia 2, Muramasa, Monster Hunter (why not, it's rpgish), Oopona, Shiren 3, Little King's Story, Sakura Wars, Chocobo Dungeon, Fire emblem, the One piece action rpg games.
And if you've got a little patience, Tales of Graces, Arc Rise, Xenoblade and more are coming out.
But the best RPG on wii is probably FFIV the after, you can download it from the shop channel. Square doesn't make good game as this one anymore.
Very touching too!
i was upset because i had to wait, but i almost never play games in other languages than english
Action Rpgs! are great, if not, my favorite along with the tactics.
I sadly don't own a PS3, I will eventually though :p
I have a friend hooked in Monster Hunter ._.
I don't know why I still enjoy the FFs, even VIII :p
Thank you for your input, this was a great help ^^
do pay attention to the wii titles i told ya XD
is not even mine! is the guy's who is moving in with Ruick and I, so yay! =]
Will check them all ;]
PS2:
Dark Chronicle
Grandia II
Breath of Fire V
Xbox 360:
Dragon's Age Origins
Lost Odyssey
Fallout 3
Wii:
Monster Hunter Tri
Tales of Symphonia: DoTNW
Sakura Wars: So long my love
I have a question, since you are the first one in saying it... why Dragon's age?
I will be getting Tales of Symphonia, it looks like one of those classy rpgs I enjoy :p
thank you for your input ^^
I really liked Rogue Galaxy though, and I have a friend who has it, yay :p
Oh gods I feel your pain. :(
Any good or bad (yes, I need to see what to avoid) RPGs out there that would help in my research in your opinion?
I haven't played many RPGs lately I'm afraid. No funds to spare for new games. My last RPG was Tales of Vesperia. However, you have a Wii, so that means you also have access to Gamecube titles as well (provided you have a GC controller and a memory card, that is!) and I would highly recommend the Tales of Symphonia series as well. I hear Tales of the Abyss is pretty good as well, for PS2.
Fable 2 has some nice concepts, but depending on what you are planning to create you might not be able to adapt them for your own uses. But who knows! Inspiration comes from anything and everything.
Despite not having played many RPGs recently, can I point out a few bad things some RPGs do?
-Linear game-play / story. Either they have very few or zero side-quests, and you might as well be traveling down a long hallway for 40 hours.
-Unbalanced battle system that allows you to reach the damage cap (usually 9999) incredibly quickly if you know how to manage your stats and items.
-Mage characters that are either ridiculously over-powered or under-powered at any point during the game. Under-powered spell-casters usually appear early in the game, and they become ridiculous towards the latter third. Balance in all things is a good motto here.
-Healer types with NO attack ability or lacking utility. Most healers get crappy spells for dealing damage (like a "Holy" spell line only they can learn, but its generally incredibly weak), so on turns where they are not needed for healing or support, their turn goes to waste when it could be used to lay some godly smack-down on the enemy. Some games also leave out important abilities like group healing spells, buffs (both single and multi-target), and the like.
I doubt much of that information would be all that useful since they are just general observations that are probably muddied by my own biases. But, I'm bored and figured I'd give some input on it. :P
thank you deeply for your input, I can't wait to get a white board and start writing things down :p
Knights of the Old Republic I and II (both Xbox games playable on the 360) are good, and their shortcomings tend to compliment each other. See especially the morality system in KotoR2 vs KotoR1.
Dragon Age: Origins (PS3 and 360) is great. Very good NPC interaction/growth, plot and story. It's especially good at taking typical fantasy tropes and turning them on their heads.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 (Xbox360) are both fantastic. Mass Effect 2 trounces the awesomeness that was Mass Effect 1, and it was a great game to begin with. Both are very immersive due in part to the well-crafted (and vast) universe of Mass Effect, but also due to the fact that (unlike KotoR and DA:O), the protagonist's dialogue is animated. Animating a protagonist's dialogue made even a ridiculous game like Saints Row 2, which was a simple GTA clone, surprisingly immersive. And in ME, you don't select an entire line of dialogue for the protagonist to deliver. You select a brief something along the lines of what the protagonist will say. Both games have well-done NPCs.
Oblivion (360, PS3) is a good example of a game that does a lot of things good and a lot of things bad. Fallout 3 (also by Bethesda) stands as a good comparison to it because with each of Fallout 3's shortcomings, the analogous shortcoming in Oblivion is probably worse. Despite highly detailed settings, both games tend to fail to be terribly immersive: silent protagonist, a very low level of NPC interaction, and the Main Quest tends to be less interesting than the Side Quests. Additionally, FO3 suffers from the fact that it ain't their baby. It was adopted from Black Isle Studios, which was making the best western RPGs 10 years ago (including the phenomenal Planescape: Torment).
Also, check out lists of RPG cliches (e.g. http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html , which is targetted at jRPGs). See how many of those stereotypes you can reverse and you'll catch your audience's attention.
For the PS2, a friend of mine has been recommending I play Shadow Hearts (particularly its sequel, Shadow Hearts: Covenant) for quite some time now, but I've not played much of it myself. My PS2 seems to dislike it and freezes in one of the early cutscenes. Maybe some others could provide more details on it.
I played FO3 though, completely, was a great game, but I definitively agree with you about the way they dealt with the npc and the mute character, what a shame, also, main quest thingie, lame :p
yay I saved the world D:
Fun combat system great story, fun and deep.
Oh yes and Exploding penguin demons call, Prinnies, Dood.
the battle system changes a lot as the story progresses, but nothing too major really, and it has a great story to it too :3
ack!!! it gets harder XD
piu grave is the best skill ever...
I would definitively add an option for long animations or short animations in the skills, cause... I would've loved to be able to skip the at first funny comments from Frederic at doing some skill.... anyways! it was a great game, I liked it =]
i also like it cause its multi-player during battle =P
it was linear, but it was sooo cinematic XD
I would never limit retries oh gawd D:!
giant swords are over rated, indeed, thank you :3
If you want today you can follow me home and I can let you try it out. (It's multiplayer)
we can try the game once we move to the new place, Berry has the Wii :p
cya in a bit!
they both rock, but trust me, tales of vesperia is superior :D! thank you!
Actually is the only RPG I play since the last three years :P
gracias x3
Tengo una idea, por que no vuelves a jugar todos los final fantasy desde el 1 de NES hasta el 13 x3. Yo haré eso, pero con los pokemon (lo se, estoy loco, pero necesito alguna manera de pasar las vacaciones xD)
like 20 Celsius, leave me atone Dx
I'm not even gonna say anything to you, you SOB.
is too hot for me regardless, I got used to my winter =]
take care you douch fag <3
For turn based RPG, I much prefer super fast battle loading, hot keys, and fast magic. My favorite chinese game, http://www.palhero.net/ from DOS era has those features. The battle is quick and fun, and if you want to level up, just press R to repeat last command or F to auto max magic. And battle loads in and out really fast, thus, bettle is not tiring. And you regain HP/MP after battle, so it is fun without worried.
Important thing is the respawn. They should not be random and respawn after certain time. Thus, you can stay around to train, or you can move on explore the massive maze (less circle the better). Put a lot of good loot in the maze would be fun and rewarding too.
For action oriented RPG, I think skill tree and customizable characters are much more important. Since you would want to experiement different class type,
I am looking to make an action rpg, fast paced and easy to use.
Thank you for your input =]
in any case, here the winter gets to be -40 C sometimes, I am really used to cold weathers now, and also... I sleep besides Ruick who is a fat bastard and tends to snuggle you when he sleeps Dx! oh the heat!!! ><
