Ronald Reagan would be a Polar Bear because that is the only thing that the Russians are afraid of.

Horse, fits in with his fame as a cowboy movie star before his presidency, otherwise an animal you'd associate with the simple, clean good ol' American theme that Reagan sold himself on during his presidency.

I like the idea of a horse, but I've gotta confess, I don't know if I'm skilled enough to try and transpose a human's facial features over those of a horse. Making brand new characters from horses is a fun and cool challenge, but I wouldn't know the first thing about making a Reagan horse that doesn't just look like some random old horse.

You could always just draw an ass instead. I figure it would get the same effect. :D

Believe it or not, Shawntae Howard already kind of did that in The Extinctioners.

An old tabby cat with a prominent jaw and obvious hair piece. Quick question, have you figured into the story other prominent 80's politicos and important figures like George Bush, Oliver North, James Baker, etc... or even a Gorbachev appearance!?!?

I really want to give Gorby a try, but he doesn't really make it onto the scene until the late 80s and the comic mainly takes place in the early 80s. George Bush might make a cameo as the veep, and Ollie North might make an appearance in those days before he got caught. World leaders and dictators in the comic will mainly serve as a historical context, but I doubt very much that Fred will personally meet with any of them.

Nice. You are right about Mikhail and i'd love to see a snarky North before the trial. If it ever gets to 1984, I think the most epic political cameo would obviously be Walter Mondale on TV and polls talking about a "close race" when in reality he would only win Minnesota and D.C. :P

From what I've plotted out in the comic, the affairs of the Cold War seem distant and immense compared to Fred's life, but Fred runs into situations that are oddly prophetic or are products of that particular moment in political history. Among the elements are suicide bombings, AIDS, drug wars, the expulsion of the PLO from Beirut, and the ongoing civil conflict in Guatemala. Bigger events like the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and the Falklands War are simply part of the background- at least for now.

But seriously, an Irish setter or mixed dog thereof would fit based on his ancestry. Pick a dog breed from that area that's especially overrated, and you've got a real winner. :-P

Believe it or not, a Great Dane. I wanted something jowly, but not absurdly so, and the problem with really furry breeds is that it's difficult to convey the wrinkles and age lines of an elder onto them. This ruled out Rough Collies and German Shepherds, who were candidates because of their role in old US TV and film.

the system I've heard for old furs is grey fur on the muzzle and face. Not sure how well it works.

I kinda see him as a floopy-eared hound dog of some sort :p Maybe a golden retriever or bloodhound.

Most folks seem to have chosen a dog. This isn't terribly surprising, given both the fandom and the fact that dogs make good candidates, so I've chosen one.
