Yikes! I hope this person was caught at least! I understand about your being shaken up. Burglars are frightening and unpredictable. At least (I hope) that you and your family are okay after this attempted intrusion.

A little over a month ago, someone tried to burglarize a house at the end of the block on my street one morning. He was spotted by a neighbor and the police had shown up quickly to answer the call. The thief hopped over fences through the backyards passing through another of my neighbor's yards who is a friend of mine. She saw the police through her window from inside and came out shouting that he was in her backyard. A moment later the thief hopped my next door neighbor's gate adjacent to my house because our big dogs in my backyard diverted him away. He ran into the street in front of me and my other neighbor as we were talking in the street in front of my car. The burglar avoided an oncoming van trying to escape the policeman on the street, but ran smack into a parked car in the driveway of my neighbor's house across the street when the K9 took him down. Hopefully, that thief will never come back to our neighborhood ever again.

Well at least you and your grandma are safe.
