SAVE THE DAY book review
This is my first ever book review. Used to reviewing games and such, but I felt this was worth reviewing and it applies to the fandom.
S.T.D, written by D.J. Fahl, is about a gay super hero, Ted Rodriguez, his boyfriend, Jay Carson, and on some level or another various heroes and villans, mostly The Extraordinaries.
I'll ty not to spoil the actual plot here or anything but I feel one minor reveal is nessiary to get the jist of what this is about. Ted Rodiguez, known to the world as Star Coyote, the Hero of Portland Oregon, is a member of The Extraordinaries, the worlds only super hero team. He has made great friends, some as close as family on that team. But he's keeping something from them.
Two guesses folks and the first one doesn't count.
(Yes I find it perplexing that there's only the one team too.)
So, a lot of the book revolves around coming out and whatnot. But not rediculously so or anything. It is a super hero novel after all, so you can expect to learn a lot about some neat folks and read about some badass fights. Then there's also Jay. You see the book is writen from both Ted and Jay's points of view dependong on the chapter, so you also get a good citizens eye view of a lot of things as well as the gay boyfriend view on some things.
Really, this book does a pretty great job of balancing all of these things and the characters are quite compelling. My personal favorites are Cinnamon & Spice, a criminal duo of vixen sisters, Rigger, a 'criminal' that makes all sorts of oddball inventions, and Stratagem and Metalyena who are both Extraordinaries and are a badger and a hyena respectively. I also have a feeling I'd have liked Force Vixen a lot had she been around more.
Anyway, I consider this book to be well worth the read for anyone. Well, except homophobes or whatnot I guess.
I'll tell you right now that the 2nd to last chapter alone makes this book well worth reading. I was practicly jumping for joy as I read it, I swear.
If you can't take my word for it on this book being good, perhaps I can let a name drop that will likely crack you up or make you wonder...
Dr. Fabulous
The quality of the story itself aside there are a few other things worthy of note.
This book has a fair number of typos in it's 347 pages. It makes me wonder if the publisher did any proof reading at all. I'm sure the author did some... can't catch them all and all that. Unless you're as anal as I am I suppose.
The art! It's nice! The 12 black and white illustrations really work well with the moments in the story they depict. Aaaaaand while looking for the artist who did the bookmarks (
docmarcus ) I stumbled my way to the profiles of the writer (
nuwisha55 ) and the illustrator (
codyvfrost ) of the book! So, there's those FA pages for some snipits relating to the book. I believe you can even catch the first two chapters of the book on the writers page.
It seems you can order the book at http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=437 if you can't make it to a con or whatnot. Though, at least at AC, a free bookmark came with it.
So! Do consider picking it up folks! Well worth your money.
