well, a popular one (that seems to work for many artists) Is the Wacom Graphire. it apparently is your basic tablet, my boyfriend has one and so does my friend, and they seem to last. That's what I'm going to get when I get a tablet ^__^

I have a Wacom Graphire too i love the thing very durable and they work great too http://www.wacom.com/graphire/6x8.cfm i have this one love it and once you get it i have a game that will sharpen your skills with it and its crazy fun too and yet at the same time it makes you want to punch whoever made the thing too

Odd suggestion here, don't get one that's TOO big. I've got the 9x12 Wacom Intuos and it hogs up all my lap space. 6x8 is a really nice compromise and you can still each reach your keyboard around it.

I dont even have a desk right now, just a table with a broken leg and a fold-out chair. Keyboard goes on my lap.

If you are in the market for a new computer as well, I would absolutely recommend a tablet PC. You could get one on ebay for maybe double the price of a big tablet. If you do go that route, HP/Compaq TC1100 is a fantastic choice, mine has served me well :)

Also, my 6x9 Graphire2 (for my powerhouse laptop, which is sans-tablet) is mavalous. Either route is a good choice, IMO, and you'll be happy either way. I just recommend the tablet pc because its does a great job transitioning people from analog canvas to digital.

Pretty much like everyone else said, I'd look into a Wacom Graphire. Cheap, light, and really easy to use. I personally find 6x8 the best size. Gives you plenty of room to draw, but not so big that it's like carrying around a drafting table XP
They last like forever too. I have a Graphire3 that's still hanging in there. I've had it for...3-4 years now. It's survived airports, trainrides, car rides and college XD and only had to replace the pen once because I used it soo much, the pen gave out :P
