Transformers: Not much more than meets the eye
18 years ago
This is Rumor Control, here are the facts:
Got back from Transformers movie earlier. Honestly, not terribly impressed. It was great eye candy. All the transformers looked great, the voice acting was well done, the actor choreography was beleiveable, but the plot was just blah. I realise that it is an evolution of 80's cheese (which I will freely admit is the best kind, after all, it also brought us the Duke/Reagan vs Cobra Command/Saddam showdown!), but c'mon... the "Alien invasion and the only ones who can save are wet behind the ears noobs who's only real skills is that they are undergroud civilian paragons in their field (although I can't figure out what the fat black guy's special skill was...) or else just being caught up in a whirlwind adventure and having to just survive long enough for the other characters to solve your problems and you get the girl.
The combat scenes were top notch (Although due to my unfamiliarity with the various TFs, I couldn't readily identify names, except for ones that had a distinct, memorable name and a stand out feature (such as Prime being red and blue, or Bumblebee being bright fuggin yellow.)
Another part that irked me was that they make several references to military hardware that people likely wouldn't be able to readily identify. Such as in one scene of an airstrike against a TF, and they call in some A-10s who are firing either A) Saber Rounds from its ubercannon, or B) Sabot rounds from said cannon.
In the end it makes a good action movie, but its not going to be heralded as an epic, in the same way that the LotRs movies were. And considering it cost me 20 dollars for a ticket, some nachoes, and the SMALL soda... well... it was a TINY let down.
So, in conclusion, go see it, but hold off on spending all your money on treats, that way you can afford to go see Live Free or Die Hard the next day :P

First off, they did describe later on what the rounds were and what they did if you were paying attention. Second of all, Its based on an 80s cartoon, how epic do you expect it to get? the original was focused on the energy crisis we were having back then.
LOtR was a story written during the early 1900 and has had a century to mature. (frankly, its the basis of pretty much 80% of the RPGs out there if ya think about it.)
Trying to compare Transformers to LOtR is apples to oranges. They are completely Different Genre. Its like trying to compare Akira to Aliens. Transformers is a Sci Fi movie, and the Rings are Mediveal Fantasy.
As for chips and soda, Ya do better if you bring our own stuff in, its cheaper and alot less annoying.
I think you spent so much time griping about the price of the chips and stuff you forgot what going to the movies means.
You go to watch cool stuff. everything else is a distraction.
(IE, if your worried about spending money, perhaps you shouldnt be spending any money on going to a movie.)
Also, I loved how Starscream handled himself. I thought it was great.
