art clones
I have a love/hate relationship with artist clones. I'm not really talking about using a professional style, like Disney clones and the like. I'm more talking about artists who are a little too influenced by other independent and small-scale artists.
Usually, the clones gain popularity after their influence disappears from the scene. And then I end up in the position of missing the old artist's work and liking anything that resembles the appealing style while being disappointed by a lack of variety or creativity.
I walk a fine line of judgment since I and most of us in this community cut our teeth using a Disney/Bluth/Amy Brown/JTHM/whatever style. But when someone copies an artist who lacks mainstream recognition, it's kind of... ehhhhhnnn. Idunno. I don't have anything against any artists as people, and I'm still a fan of their work, but I feel kinda flippy floppy about it.
Thoughts?

"Good artists borrow; great artists steal."
Are you talking about popufurs here or in general?
I think the ones that get me are the ones who get noted that their art looks like someone else and fans/friends jump on that person saying their art looks NOTHING like the other persons when it's clear that it *does* right down to the anatomy, coloring style, background and the like. That's something that troubles me.
And when you start seeing fifty million copies of a style it's just not...Fun anymore to look at? I don't really know.
like you said, if it's a heavily overused and famous type of style i really don't care (maybe because the influence is OBVIOUS and the borrower isn't receiving credit for the 'unique' style like some lesser known people), but when it's on a smaller scale it almost feels like MAYBE they think they can get away with something if nobody recognizes the style ... EHHHH .. this is one of those taboo subjects that i usually don't speak up about but it really does annoy me quite a bit
Also how dare you publicize your social observances. man, what a crime D:
FA it's very prevalent to me - DA on the other hand, not so much - since the ones that come off the top of my head right away are mostly just influenced by certain shows/styles that are based with actually professionals.
I'm all for artistic expression and if you want to use someone else's style to try and create your own, but I suppose it defeats the purpose to look like a carbon copy style, right down to the lines, and dare I say even the line width. Colors, stylings...the works.
Ah well, if that is the way they want to go with their work, then so be it - i've basically stopped watching a ton of people because of this, I still think they are good artists, yes, but it's just a depressing sight to see their original style disappear into oblivion.
and when people actually copy a particular picture, I'm amazed that no one else sees it, or at least doesn't say anything. I think I've got a pretty good eye for it when they change a few things up just a bit. I'm really shocked more people don't notice.
I really don't know where my style is going, everything I finish is pretty different at this point, well maybe not but I really don't have my own style yet so maybe I shouldn't be talking. I'm not trying to copy a style, I try to draw to my liking but i don't know where it''s gonna go or how different I'll really even be.
