People Hate Icon Memes

Fun fact: People hate icon memes.
That includes those swaying icons, Lady Gaga icons, the condom icons, the derp icons, the Justin Bieber icons, etc. At best, you come off looking like someone who is so boring you've gotta latch on to some existing trend to be memorable, at worst you come off looking like a complete jackass.

fun fact: Fun facts are true x3
But yeah, at first they are kinda funny, but after everyone leaps on the bandwagon it gets stale.
Sure it's 'unoriginal' but most people just get them because they think they're cute/funny and aren't putting as much thought into it as you think. Not everyone's out to get attention or be a jackass by getting an icon meme.
But the swaying ones I would adblock because the movement got on my nerves. And Lady Gaga I simply do not want to see, period.
You forgot a few though, like some of the "here's my butt" type icons, which typically fall into two categories. One involves the animated walking thing with the tail going back and forth far enough to reveal the entire butt. The other isn't moving, but it usually has the tail lifted with a heart just below it. Now I enjoy gay sex as much as the next homosexual, but having an image that basically says "I love taking it right here" as an icon? That's just terrible.
This kind of monkey see monkey do logic is true, but it's a subjective view on how you perceive trends. It's like mainstream culture, a lot of people like Lady Gaga genuinely because they enjoy her music, the rest may follow the herd to fit in, like you said, but it's not in good taste to cast a blanket like that.
