Pokemon Battles. The Essentials?
First off I am aware of Smogon.

So yeah... this is a journal about choosing Pokemon and teams.
So thought I would make this for anyone to give their input and help me a bit. I am not too good at Pokemon, I mean I only play the story and that is it and pretty much any team can beat it because trainers have a theme and you are told which Pokemon is coming out next so it just makes it all the easier.
I don't think I'd end up battling others but would be nice to know I possibly could. But it's just more for a personal goal to have a good team... that and for the battle frontier, which you can't win easily like you can the game.
I am only familiar with sweepers. When I look up Pokemon and ones I wanna keep and what moves, all I can think of is to give them offensive moves even if they are defensive and don't have too high an attack.
*** HERE IS WHAT I WANNA ASK ***
What are some team essentials? Like what are some things every team needs? Do I really need someone with Stealth Rock or Spikes? Does every team need at least that? What types of moves should I consider? Such as, should I always have an ice move on hand for off chance of a dragon Pokemon?
As I said this is more for a Battle Frontier use and a personal goal. Also for off chance I would battle others. I assume a team made to battle others would be able to do the job on the Battle Frontier.
side notes:
So... yeah... I also kind of want to see if I can be more unique than what is on Smogon. But... seems like any game where you battle one another, be it Pokemon or as with my friend, Magic The Gathering, seems you can't win easily/at all if you don't follow a set build for a character or team... or deck, when coming to cards. And trying to make your own team/deck and you lose to those who use the same Pokemon and teams over and over and over...
Battles seem so tough though against others. I tried on Smogon with a Pokemon simulator and got a taste and man... it's like you have to predict another's moves! And for me that is... gah! A false prediction costs you the match. I saw people battle each other over and over, using their same teams so they knew each others pokemon and moves and it was just a matter of predicting their moves. Such as will they switch or use Shadow Punch? Should I switch for chance they would? Course this is even HARDER when it's against someone whom you dunno what Pokemon they have. Just pure... madness.
*** HERE IS WHAT I WANNA ASK *** A REPEAT

FA+

About the Roar or Whirlwind, seems a bit cheap and hard to counter if they are fast, I bet that upsets others and to me is making me think it might be unbeatable once pulled off or something but probably not.
But yeah I mean everything is based on risk and chance it seems. To have a Pokemon with those move on off chance you come across a Pokemon with this move or type. Even then, can it be pulled off in time before he faints and you find you could of had use if you knew the opponent had that Pokemon?
It's all overwhelming. I know I am thinking in terms of fighting a real person and all but I want to think of things that way as it makes it easier rather than having to say real person or battle frontier because I think if just thinking in terms of a real person that can be used against in the battle frontier.
Also seems most Pokemon I want to use because I like are sweepers and all and that ain't good. Eh... I doubt I'd even get as far as to even start making my team anyway. I was doing that with Platinum but stopped before I got there. Was building up rare candies, got 88 of them so far, so that way when I start my team... I breed several, get the one with the ability I want. Save, use candies to get it to Lv.100, use one of those sites to find out the IVs, and since I didn't do any battles there are no EVs. If I find it is good or even bad, I reset and level up normally if good, or try breeding again if bad. But I guess I could also check if I would Wi-Fi battle someone and then I take note of the stats, if possible. That is a bit faster I guess but I don't always have someone in reach and it would be a bother to them. If only my bro didn't lose his DS... or have it get stolen by one of my sis's friends which there is no proof but for it to just vanish like that...
Anywho... thanks for the comment. It's still all maddening and overwhelming though I don't think I can handle it.
Stealth Rock is imperative since many people calculate their survival rate based on how much damage one takes from switching in since the damage is dependent on the typing against Rock (which can remove half the HP of someone 4x weak to rock) but don't fret over if you can or can't have it.
Honestly don't fret that you can't beat absolutely everything under the sun, it isn't all about winning or losing it is about having fun (unless you are against the AI where in that case the AI cheats like crazy)
2) Varied but I think if you want to keep the foe from switching a lot Spikes and Steath Rock!
3) There's a lot to think of but beware of a few moves to use, Ice, Electric, Poison, and Fire moves. They can do a lot if your not careful.
