Furries and Tattoos (I need your thoughts!)

Its something that has been on my mind for some time.
So if most furries have fur and wear tattoos, how did they get them?. What I mean is how do you give a furry tattoo? On humans they have naked exposed skin, thus the tattoo can be seen, but most furries are covered in fur. A tattoo would technically be impossible to be seen or given for that matter.
It seems picky and ridiculous but I'm actually thinking of the probability for this to happen. So I want everyone's thoughts on this topic. How can you explain this so that furries can have tattoos? Honestly I'm looking at this issue and I can't find a way for this to work.

Alternatively, with very short hair they could get a regular tattoo.
Seriously though you think that with short hair the tattoo could be seen? What about if the hair is longer of thicker?
