Make friends who share your interests and do things with them.
Bone up on your taking-care-of-yourself skills.
Find a simple comforting activity you cana do when your idle time leads to loneliness.
Call up your family once in a while, just to catch up on each other's lives.
Check out the bulletin board in the Student Center for any clubs that might be of interest. I had a great time joining a science fiction writing club.
Take a book or sketch pad and sit out in the community area of the dorm, which they hopefully have. If there's a TV or Radio, turn it on. If not, bring a radio of your own. Have a bowl of popcorn or chips with you as well. This is a great way to get to meet other people in your dorm. Just be sure to say hello to anyone passing by. They may not stop and talk right away, but seeing the same people over time will eventually lead to getting to know people you can hang out with. A book or sketch pad helps spark curiosity and perhaps find something in common.
Don't spend all your free time sitting in your dorm room. Find events taking place and get out. I'm not talking about partying, but simply socializing at campus events. Being a part of things beyond just studying and taking classes, will really help to eliminate home-sickness.
