The irony was not lost on me! I actually did a basic version of this when I was on the sofa waiting for my doom to arrive at his hands (while he did a Photoshop sheet of the game)... never having tried it since just making up the game for IZ1, I was... surprised by how difficult it was ;)

Yes, well... that was quite an experience, as well ;) And the weirdest feeling when it happens, as I found out. I think it's even more difficult when you've got that thing hanging over your head...

I've tried the durn thing 15 or 20 times now - I only average about 3. I've gotten up to 5 twice, mostly out of luck from the unmatched symbols being on the top row.

I can't think of a better method than picking a symbol, trying to find its pair, and repeating. The symbols are just too similar for my eyes to rapidly pick them out - I sometimes get more false positives than correct answers. Trying to focus on similar groups of symbols isn't working either.

Damn you. I'm going to be stuck playing this game all night until I win.

(Then again, what would be the point if the contestants won most of the challenges?)

What I found was that I eventually began to pick out the symbols that I could recognize and scan for very quickly (the dots, numbers and the various L and T shapes) which sped things up a bit... it seemed to get easier with practice, and I finally managed to do it (twice) this afternoon!

It's addictive, though... it seems to have that sense that you might get it next time :) I had made up the game for IZ1 without even trying it for myself, but it's strange to find just how... impossible under pressure it is.

Ugh.... I'm frustrated to no end over this. I'm normally really good at puzzles, but apparently this is my Achilles' heel.

I recognize most of the symbols now - I even have names for them - but my eyes just keep on tricking me and I'll fail to realize that a symbol's match is over in the corner or something.

Nothing has really worked consistently for me - not scanning by rows, not searching for related groups of symbols, not brute force trying the first row and restarting if I don't get a few.

I WILL defeat this game. Eventually. Maybe.

It seems to be at that exact point where it's really difficult but you get the feeling that you can just, just do it next time! It's strange how it's at exactly the kind of level - an easy concept to understand but increasingly difficult to do under pressure - that would really work for the genuine IZ, even though it started as something I wrote without testing it or even realizing how appropriate it would be for an apparently iconic game :)

I seem to make mistakes most with symbols that the pair is right next to... I seem to automatically check as far away as possible and ignore the closer squares.

I think it might be - though I've tried teaming up as well, without much success! You can't ever guarantee that you're not drifting into looking at (or missing) the same areas of the board...

Oh, that...! Even then it took me an awfully long time to realize what you meant about it ;)

I'd never seen them put together in a montage like that - I found it more fascinating than you would expect to see how they changed subtly each time, experimenting with getting bigger, smaller, having the trailing dots move backwards and then abandoning it...
