No I wasn't thinking of living in the city. Maybe a half hour away tops like in Brandon. I don't want a long commute to work.

There's just houses and a Taco Bell in Brandon. I live in Orlando.

Traditional thing is that people move to be near their job, so I'll be planning on that much.

Fort Myers for me which is a few hours below Tampa. Can't help too much since I haven't traveled alot, the closest being Sarasota which is an hour or so away from Tampa. Sarasota is rather nice, though abit pricey from what I heard and it is right next to the beach if that's for you. Florida is too hot for me to be hanging at the beach X3

I've lived in Sarasota for the last few years (originally from Tampa), it is a bit pricey and very seasonal. It is a bit too far for a daily commute, I've been doing it all this week and it is brutal lol. But you're right it is nice but expensive.

I've been making weekly trips from Fort Myers to Sarasota which is 2 to 2 1/2 hours each way. Yeah I could see how it could feel really tiring lol Sarasota seems nice except for the traffic on a few roads. The place seems abit smaller, though it is nice. I just can't stand going on Bee Ridge lol I've seen more crashes up there than I ever saw down in Fort Myers lol

Yeah, Bee Ridge does seem to have a lot of accidents. That's a long trip to make, I've done the reverse, but not weekly. It is a little smaller, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

Let's see. Just north and south of Ruskin on US-41 are Sun City and Apollo Beach. Both [and ruskin inclusive] are large retirement communities. Be prepared to put up with lots of old folks and middle/lower class rednecks.

Further north by about 10 miles is Gibsonton and Riverview, which are up and coming suburban neighborhoods. Nice places, and it's not entirely impossible to find yourself a house to rent for about the same cost as an apartment in Tampa proper.

Brandon, further north still, is going to give you the most options in terms of finding a place, and being that it's closer to being a full city than any of the other four [which themselves are burroughs] you won't be lacking for any shopping needs. That said, though, you're only a few minutes up and down I-75 from anything you might need.

I'd suggest against moving southward into Manatee county. Having been born and raised there, I can tell you it's a county that is friendly to homebuyers, but awful if you're just wanting to rent an apartment for a while. If you feel you must, I'd say take a gander at Parrish or East Palmetto. anything further south and you'll just be paying more -and-driving further.

Have you considered renting out your condo through an agency in the meantime? Renting it out would be easier than selling it in thiis economy, and you'd have the agency running all the landlord-esque aspects of it.

You'd be good on both accounts; paying off the condoo while making money down in FL.

My dad suggests that if I'm going to rent out my condo, I need to be nearby so I can come repair things and inspect to keep tenants from damaging it. If it involves a flight back, it may be inconvenient.

Still, in this economy, it's definitely an avenue to consider.

That's the thing with the rental agencies I've been hearinng ads for. They take care of finding tenants and upkeep for a monthly fee when the renter moves in.

You can also look into a hoome warranty. My AC broke down, and the guy that came out said I had to have it replaced.. But when I called the warranty company, they came out multiple times to repair it, and all parts and labour was covered under a $100 deductable.

You've got a bunch of options these days compared with what people used to have to deal with.

Yeah, you should hire a company to take care of that if you can, even if you rent it out and live close by. Nothing like being woken up in the middle of the night cus your tenant's kid flooded the bathroom.

Sounds like you've made some decisions! Excellent. Hmm, hope the condo sells quickly for ya.

I second all of this, I'm in Carrollwood. These are all good neighborhoods in Tampa, but are just barely outside (some inside) the city limits. If you want to go a bit further you can do Brandon/Riverview or even Lutz.

I was about an hour north in New Port Richey. NPR has some nice parts, but the area I grew up was in between the ghetto and the middle class ranch homes from the 1970s. ;)
