Looking at reference seems to be 'uncool' or something in this fandom. Hence all the generic furries in the art.

I completely agree! This boycott on referencing is not just illogical, but completely against any form of artistic growth. It's sad that this is so shunned in furry.

Everyone on this site seems to just draw dogs. I never get commissions from people with characters that look like the animal. Just dogs.

The reason why furries draw bats as dogs is the same as why furries draw birds with penises and lizards with breasts.

I think a lot of folks take a dog, make some minor adjustments and make them other animals. Likewise a skunk looks nothing what-so-ever like a cat with a whit stripe, yet plenty of folks seem to think that will do. Shame on those PepeLe Pew cartoons.

This is so true, for bats and various other species. I've also seen plenty of ferret art that just makes us look like rats. Personally my bat character is one of the dog-faced species so it's not as bad, but it still bothers me to see bad anthro art.

Because all furries care about is dicks, the face is never important.

Flying foxes really do look very canine, but the rest of the bats...yeahno. Not even remotely canine.

I really hate it when people draw or make fursuits of felines and give them a fatter, shorter version of a dog's snout too. Feline faces slope downward; they don't jut out like a dog's!!

There's really no exuse for that, since when you draw something cartoony, you can make it look as human as you want, without making it look like a dog first. I might even say that realistic bats DO look more like humans than realistic dogs. At least they share more common characteristics with humans that dogs do.

In all seriousness, I think it's just because dogs are the most familiar animal face, and already the most common. People just tend to draw what they now.

Well, there's the fact that many species of bats look like scary wrinkly old men with radiation mutation.... and most people want shiny bigdick pretty boy characters. I'm not going to lie, I'm guilty of it too, but it's mostly because I've always leaned more towards a human face on that particular character. I love me some doofy batfaces :3

there's lots of dogs and foxes on FA, so poeple get to practice drawing them loads. when they come to draw something else, they forget what makes that species unique and just stick with what they know...

I know old journal is old, but I can sort of see why people prefer more canine/cat faces, I personally don't like the bats with the spade shaped noses, I like the fruit bats most of all that's why I draw bats with more dog like faces, although I do fall into that category of drawing them with more feline faces, I just prefer those. I think many bat pics fall into several categories of "laziness" "bad referencing" and "personal preference" the first two being the more prominent

Except that there's bazillion bat species that don't have spade shaped noses, but just normal snouts where it really makes no sense or excuse to make it any more dog/cat-like.

Dooood. Okay, first of all, you're talking about new-world bats versus old-world fruit bats. The fruit bats are the ones with the longer snouts. However, they may still have leafy noses and ugly ole ears, depending on the species. Secondly, really do a side-by-side comparison of a canid face versus a fruit bat face: they differ quite substantially, even from a slimmer canid such as a fox.

Third and final point, there are NO bats that resemble cats or mice in any way, shape or form. Thank you and goodnight.

you are quite right that there are no bats with particularly cat like faces but there are plenty of bats with foxy/canine like faces, why are people not allowed to draw bats with foxy/wolf like faces? I'm sure if you did a side by side comparison for all the animals you see drawn, you would find a vast majority don't really look 100% like their counterparts and are in some way stylised, why is wrong for someone to draw a bat with a fox/canine face given that there are bats that have similar features, why is it that you feel bats have to be drawn in a particularly realistic way?

I don't see the reason they should, if they want to draw canine faces, there's hundred canines to choose from.
Nor do I really don't get the need to draw an animal while making sure that it doesn't look one bit like the animal it's supposed to be, where's the fun or appreciation of the animal in that?

I personally won't say it's wrong but I just can't understand why furries seem to enjoy failing at things they are supposed to like.

well I get that it's frustrating if people don't draw the animal in a realistic way but again I think it just come down to personal choice, some people just prefer a more canine face and obviously wish to draw their characters or their fursona in such a way, I don't think it shows a lack of appreciation for the animal you can appreciate something without drawing it overly realistic, for the most part I don't think it's failing although I'm sure there are plenty of people who just haven't researched bats thoroughly but for a lot of people I think it's just a personal preference to go with what appears most aesthetically pleasing to them which more often then not is a canine style face.

I'm not talking about "overly realistic", just that furries seem to only know how to copy Batty from Ferngully, and finding a bat character that's not almost a copy-paste of Batty's face tends to be an exception to the rule.
