Sailing the Seas of Snark - FurBuy Community Lead Wanted
15 years ago
Apparently is has come to my attention that I am an asshole. Thanks to everyone who's pointed that out lately, I honestly wasn't aware that being snarky and loud by itself without hurting anyone made someone an asshole, but it seems I'm wrong due to overwhelming social pressure stating otherwise. Also apparently my ability to have fun and be jocular (I love that word) as an individual somehow rubs-off as injuring FurBuy's reputation because I am the current Community Lead - despite the fact that I've been around far longer than FurBuy and happen to have my own opinions about a whole assortment of things which bear zero impact on how FurBuy is operated and how well it stands alone as a business and hobby website. And I stress hobby, myself and my staff are all volunteers and we built and operate FurBuy at a pretty significant loss - not only do we invest a lot of hard work and effort into maintaining, improving and managing the site, but we all pitch in financially to some extent to make it happen and keep it running.
Which leads me to this point: I am not a PR person and don't want to be the Community Lead for FurBuy. I am not the positive face of furry fandom, I am simply a senior software engineer who happens to love furry art enough to buy it and continue improving the leading site for buying it. What FurBuy needs is a good Community Lead to be the public face of the site and handle PR and communications with users and managing accounts. The position requires daily attention to the site, checking e-mail 2-3 times a day, coming up with ideas and promotions for the site, and managing an advertising strategy. Probably a good hour or two each day. I am currently in this role in ADDITION to doing the accounting and filing for the company (a Partnership based LLC) as well as being the senior/lead engineer on the site as well. The parent company does have a profit model for the partners, and you would be required to sign papers to become a partner member of the company in order to take this position. Someone taking over the role would free up a lot more time for me to work on feature additions, improvements and additional security for the site.
So, anyone interested?

Who are the kinds of people who need to be PR'ed at? Businesses or individual buyers? I'm curious... Sounds pretty fun, though I'm not too sure I know much about advertising. More of a Graphic Designer, but willing to do research.

Advertising is just a small part of things, as a graphic designer you'd at least be good at handling the images and putting together banners and whatnot. =) Who to PR to, well there's the userbase for one - keeping them happy is job one, getting them to become contributing members is job two, and bringing in new quality people from anywhere and everywhere is job three on the PR end. There is some budget for running ad banners, for posting ads in con books, for fliers, convention or furmeet parties, whatever you think will help bring in new people and make the site more popular. The main task for the community lead is site management - basically reviewing new/updated accounts for completeness/legitimacy, applying membership status to users, mediating issues between buyers and sellers, and general enforcement of site policies and spirit of service. In a nutshell it's a matter of checking over every new auction and user to make sure things are on the up-and-up, aside from that having fun and making FurBuy a success. =)

Ah, I see! That makes sense to me. Do you want some kind of application or anything submitted for review?

Oh, whoops, how did I miss replying to this comment? No, instead of a "resume" I'd rather chat with you extensively over the course of a week or two on IMs. To be a community lead for a site you have to be on staff in the parent company, which means you have to become a partner. And I need to get to know you and explain the responsibilities and what all happens directly and make sure we can get along and communicate clearly since we'd be working together quite a bit. Becoming a partner also requires a majority approval from the other partners in the company, so I need to be able to represent you personally (or you represent yourself to them if you know them) too.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you for explaining and no problem about the wait! I have some wierd things going on with my jobs, but I still think this sounds interesting. ^^
