mmmm. I find one needs a healthy dose of philosophy to appreciate life, but that doesn't produce effective, productive drones does it? I find that public education tends to give you just enough information to be considered marginally competent, and then moves on. Making Connections and seeing the Big Picture, connecting acadamia to real life takes more than memorization and work sheets, you have to want to learn. furthermore you have to care. which is not something I see a lot of.

the difference between intelligent, Savvy people, and the run of the mill human as far as I can tell is who they consider responsible for their education, a Teacher/Professor, or themselves.

A very keen observation. A great deal of learning is done by the learner. Really all that teachers do is facilitate learning. That is there main goal. I think we have turned whole generations of learners off from learning itself simply by allowing the idea of the teacher to degrade into a educated baby-sitter. Most of the time school has always been more about teaching one to conform then teaching knowledge. There are great inconsistencies in this however as many teachers and schools do teach knowledge as most would think. I think that main issue is the place of reality in the material and teaching methods being used. Ever felt weird when your history teacher was teaching about certain philosophers scholars of history and their influence on mathematics by actually teaching some math? That happened to me. I still remember one student raised his hand and said, "this is history! Not math Mister!" While I was never great at math I certainly understood what the teacher was getting at. The other guy, well, not so much.

On the contrary, I found this hilarious and genuinely insightful. Its rare I find anything entertaining from Cracked any more. The classic "chut-ups" were probably the best.

True. This article made some very good points and was pretty hilarious in presenting it. Perhaps its because it's all literally true. I still maintain that our education system still does not attach learning to reality enough, but neither does our society so I suppose everything is screwed. lol!
