I've had a few people do this to me actually when I took a couple of large orders. It's understandable that people want to know what's up with their orders, but they also have to realize that the artist they paid has a life beyond the computer and art software.

Usually an assertive response gets most people to get off your back for a while. If they're insistent about it, I'd just refund their money and tell them to have a nice day.

Yes I agree with you, it's important to let the commissioner know how it's coming along as you work. :) This is the first time I had to deal with something like this and I had to say good bye.

I normally don't feel the need to give an artist a deadline, so long as we both understand that after 3 month marker I start inquiring if you haven't been keeping me up to date with information. It is a business proposition, it's not friends tossing money to help a buddy out and getting a nice piece of art as a thank you. So I whole heartedly agree with your stance on commissioning, however, if you aren't the type of artist to give updates every so often, I am the kind of commissioner who will inquire at the 3month mark of no status change, with no updates from you, and nothing to show for progress. At 6 months I'd start inquiring once a month ( I don't feel this is too often) after 9 months yeah at this point it's refund + the interest I would have made had that money been in my savings account, (commission total + .05%, since I'm not a charity and you basically held up my money for this long, and you also aren't the IRS) or the artwork in full. After a year, you get the privilege of going on my "watch out for these artists journal). Though all of this has only happened 3 times so far in my history of commissioning ;p and I don't actually think it'll come to this, mostly it doesn't as most artists keep that honest open communication open.

The above also only comes into play if I prepaid the commission. Artists usually prefer that I prepay in full when they start my commission so the clock doesn't start ticking too soon ;p Only a handful have required I prepay before entering the actual queue as I ALWAYS pay my artists in full, some even wind up getting tips based on timeliness and quality of the final product.

I've personally been patiently waiting for you to reopen. I don't do auctions, ever. So if that's all you'll be taking as far as new commissions I'd have to be sad.
