NaNo Novel: Here Falls The Thunder
When I first joined the fandom, I was under the impression the fandom was a group of socially accepting people who had an alternate look on things and a different lifestyle.
There are only two words that can describe the truth:
Utter. Bullshit.
The hypocrisy I run into on a regular basis makes me steam and broil. Social acceptance my ass. The fandom is made up of a number of tightly knit social groups, who consist of people who all live generally local to each other, or have the ability to see each other semi-regularly.
These said social circles, are closed, knit tightly, in such a way that prevents any sort of outside interference or intrusion from anyone. Unfortunately, what qualifies as intrusion is broad. Merely attempting to engage in interactions with these individuals can qualify as being desperate and invasive.
Now, if this were limited to merely the internet, I would be willing to laugh off this entire thing and poke fun at it. But this extends outside the internet as well. I'll admit, I've fortunately never had the problem of anyone reacting negatively to me, but it's bound to happen.
The sheer hypocrisy of it makes me snarl. I try my best to be more outgoing, to be more open. But I can't help it when the times I'm with such large groups, everyone almost immediately forms their circles and talk about stuff. There's little room for me to get anywhere in there.
And people wonder why I don't like big parties, and why FC is so nerve-wracking.

Some of the artists here keep close-knit groups simply because it keeps out a lot of the people who go overboard in their appreciation, or would try and mooch free stuff off of them constantly.
This doesn't justify shutting out everyone, but it is some reasoning as to why it happens.
