Probably a suicide by cop incident. It's fairly common for someone to want to kill themselves but not have the guts to do it personally, so they'll commit a crime or put themselves in a situation where a police officer is forced to kill them.

But...there are just better ways to go about doing this! What if the cops were pro snipers and shot only his leg and got him medical attention before he bled out? Then he'd be an injured, jailed/mental ward criminal. Mission failure! D:

Ok, rephrase: pro sniper cop aims for the head and miraculously misses so horribly that they shoot his leg? Well I guess it wouldn't be a pro sniping cop anymore but...still!

I don't blame the officer for defending himself when he had no other choice, and he DID use every other option he had first. He did his job as best he could.

I will celebrate the death of any human who has the audacity to believe he has the right to try to kill one of my brothers for the simple fact that they are who they are. Someone who believes that automatically becomes less than human in my mind.

No, someone who believes that is out of their friggin' gourd.
He didn't want to kill a police officer as much as he just wanted to lash out at something, and since the police are an easy target he just picked them. He was wrong, he was crazy, and he needed to be stopped-- But the instant they become "less than human" is the instant you go just as crazy as them.

That's the sucky thing about doing things the right way; you have to play by the rules, even for those who don't deserve it. Learning how to still consider these sick people as still human is one of the hardest thing for an officer to learn. Hell, most people have trouble with it.

Societies NEED police. They NEED people to "Serve and Protect" precisely because people like this exist.
But Cervantes put it best: "It is vitally important for those who hunt monsters not to become them in the process".

I do love how people are saying that the cops should have done something like aim for the legs. Are they aware that getting shot in the legs is actually one of the worst places to get shot? He had a better chance of living getting shot in the chest than if they shot his legs.

At any rate, it's clear that this guy was hell-bent on getting owned by the cops, and he got his wish. Normally, I would say that they should have used nonlethal methods, but given the circumstances (and multiple attempts at using said nonlethal methods), they acted appropriately. If this guy was so deranged and motivated that he'd rip out tazer lines and still keep going, nothing would stop him except... well, being stopped.

tldr: Giggity go, NYPD.
