Oh, this is pretty neat! I... I only drew two humans or so in my life and I NEVER drew from models, not even animals.

By the way, I don't know if you ever had any gesture drawing lessons, but do you (or anyone else) have tips for an absolute beginner?

My first suggestion is don't draw from photos. If you want to really get an understanding of anatomy and how it functions in three dimensions, try to use live models. Drawing from photos only gives you a fabricated and limited perspective, where live models are actually there in front of you and your eyes can see and understand true three dimentionial mass and lighting. You can also move around a model to see where and why the anatomy works the way it does. Plus you can choose the poses by discussing a set up with your model.

That's good! If you have a patient friend who's willing to pose (with clothes) for you, it would really help. Just make sure they can be still for a short period of time. They can sit, lay down or stand using a chair to hold on to for ease and comfort. If they are good at being still for an extended amount of time, have them pose with more exaggeration, like pointing or holding props (a ball, stick, etc.)

With strangers or random people, they are often unpredictable i.e. move around too much, but it's certainly more useful than drawing from photos or pre-drawn figures.

Drawn to Life is two huge books by a Disney tutor on mostly nothing but gesture drawing.

Broadly speaking with gesture drawing: Draw the story, draw what's happening, draw what they're doing and not always what you see. Stretch it, say it loud, say what's going on - straight copied poses are often a bit mushy and don't get to the point.

On a more practical level, a good first line is a curve straight from head to toe - the action line.

Some suggest you gesture from the inside out (drawing skeletons) but some prefer gesturing the contour. I like contours.
