Rotoscope is the technique of drawing over previously prepared imagery to create animation. Usually used in reference to filming someone then drawing over them frame by frame.

It's how the force-lightning was done in Return of the Jedi.

Rotoscoping is an animation method whereby someone draws an animation using another animation as the base. In this case, drawing over a scott pilgrim sprite.
Examples include the recent film of A Scanner Darkly, and the Ralph Bakshi version of Lord of the Rings.
