Inspiration/Ask me questions

Over the course of the past week, some of my favorite artists have uploaded drawings which they have stated as being inspired by my works. Given that I have not even passed six months of existence here on FA, I'm quite humbled and honored to influence some of my longtime favorite artists:

Would you be up to doing badges or commissions?

At this time, I am not open to commissions because I cannot guarantee that I'll get it done in a good amount of time. Plus I am looking to improve my drawing abilities before I demand money for art: I don't know how to use markers or brushes on real media, or how to draw with computer programs without it looking like MS paint. I will probably offer commissions on a limited basis in the next six months or so. Thank you for the interest, though!

Not usually. Sometimes I might be influenced by a comment or the drawing of another, but it's hard to draw something that feels forced.

I used to. Now I live in a mid-atlantic state. I keep my current whereabouts ambiguous because I want to keep a certain level of anonymity.

I miss Portland dearly.

Your work has a quality that just feels comforting.
It's hard to define.
You take interesting views of things and your artistic style makes it all the more fun.
Slice of life is a very hard genre for a cartoonist to accomplish, yet you succeed well with your characters,

I think your dreams of being a professional cartoonist are well within reach.

If I ever become a "big name" in the industry I will be immensely appreciative and draw as much as the reader wants in their copy at book signings. Someday, Morningside. :3

why is almost everything you draw dates to 1990 and prior, like automobiles, magazines, vacuums even font styles etc?
I love retro/vintage so just curious.

It's probably due to nostalgia for my childhood. I really like the design aesthetics of the late 70's though the early 90's, and I find most current design to be boring. Or course, if this was the 1980's now, I'd probably be pining for the 1950's. Old things aren't inherently better, but they're usually rarer, leading to a sort of exoticism, nostalgia and novelty.

By ESL, do you mean English as a second language? I try not to use textspeak (lol u guyz c u later) in my written text, and I consult a thesaurus frequently. Therefore, my English may appear overly proper, if that's what you mean.

I've been drawing as long as I can remember, since my childhood years. Since the age of 9, I drew almost nothing but civilian passenger airplanes. I drew frequently until middle school, then I picked it up again in my undergraduate college years, drawing nude figures and architecture. I didn't buckle down and draw anthro characters everyday until 2008 or so, and in 2010 I finally began posting them online.

When I was young, I was a very good draftsman for my age, and it gave me a good feeling of accomplishment and creation. To draw well feels like a superpower, and I want to develop it fully.

Interesting, I can agree with you on the part about the good feeling of accomplishment. Being able to create things does feel very satisfying and sometimes it feels like a superpower!
I have another question, which would hopefully by my last. Why do you draw the way you do, as in your style?

In my youth, I was most attracted to and influenced by the art of Hergé (Tintin) and by infographic illustrations found in airplane safetycards and science textbooks. Later on, I liked the works of Jason, Jeffrey Brown and other so-called "indie" cartoonists who didn't draw superhero or manga style works. I suppose if I grew up liking manga or superhero comics I would draw in their style, but it never appealed to me enough to copy their style. This book series by the Japan Travel Bureau is also an influence: http://www.amazon.com/Look-into-Jap...../dp/4533013813 I used to be really into Japanese culture, and these books illustrate everything in an amusing fashion.

I haven't "redacted" professionally since entering college for graduate studies. In my news years, I drew little anthro characters at the bottom of news scripts during spare moments in the broadcast. I will post some of these sketches in the coming months. The scenes of the news industry come through in a few of my works in their setting and background, and I will draw on my knowledge of the industry for longer works in the future.

Is your style influenced by Richard Scarry? I was reminded of his art as soon as I saw yours and remembered how much I enjoyed his illustrations.

Yes. I loved his picture books when I was younger, and I think he and Ed Emberley laid a foundation for a love of everyday scenes.

Your style looks like something that could be very popular on comic strips/greeting cards/ kid's books, or other merchandises. Are you planning on making any of those?

I've imagined making stationery featuring the All-Wolves, and they might go well on mugs, too. It worked for B. Kilban and his cats! I have a graphic novel idea that could possibly work as a young adult's book, but I never had any kid-specific ideas for my drawings. If I drew a very serious or emotional story, I would be opposed to auxiliary merchandise. But for fun or silly stories, I'd be fine with merchandising. I'd rather put out my own stickers and pencils rather than see only bootleg images of my characters urinating on car logos.

Believe or not, I was thinking about Kilban's cats, too. I'd buy the pencils =]
Your style and the 70/80's theme will draw more of the adult's collector's though. But it's the adults who would buy cards with these thing on them for special occasions. Calendars would probably work also.
