Ive just completed the main storyline myself, and gotta agree with pretty much everything you wrote, especially regarding karma, it pretty much stays on neutral the whole game unless you really go out of your way to be the saviour of new vegas or kill rape and rob every single person you meet
I dont know if its any better/worse on the PS3 I got mine on the 360 and its buggy as hell. One bug thats really kicking my ass is every now and again when you walk through a door, it goes to a loading screen and then goes to a black screen, forcing you to reset, then when you try and re-load the game you get a message saying "autosave file corrupted, could not load" Thankfully it doesnt affect your manual saves...
Not too sure about the iron sights either, its a nice touch but I never seem to be able to hit a damn thing with them.
i never have trouble with autosaves like everyone else seems to, but i'm getting obscenely long loading times... like up to 5 minutes for a small room (like one of the bungalows in novac, for instance)
Do NOT trust Bethesda's Autosaves...they corrupt easily... either learn to save often, or get a mod that does it for you, Casm for Fallout 3 did a good job of it, not sure about NV yet though.
Got it for 360, so mods won't really do the trick...
also, bump the load time up to 8 now, lol. i tried clearing my cache, and i played a different game for a little bit (in case that had something to do with it? i unno) but i'm entering camp mcarren now, and i entered it, logged into FA, read a couple comments here, wrote one below somewheres, and im still typing as it hasn't loaded...
stupid loading times... i know camp mcarren is big, bit it didn't take nearly half this time the last time i was there
It seems loading time varies for everyone.. dont know why though. I thought the 1-2 minute load times when Im in The Strip or going into Camp McCarren was bad, but yours seems worse.
1-2 min isn't too bad, it could be better, but it's a lot to load, i get that...
but when you can put the game down, go make something to eat, finish it, open a soda, walk back, and still have time to get comfortable before it loads, you've got a problem...
but hey, i'm sure they'll have an update that will fix any bugs. I bet it's some loading bug or something...
it's probably the game engine itself. Fallout uses the gamebryo engine which is the same used by oblivion while pretty is not the most efficient engine around in terms of resource use. Also how bethesda constructs their games has a lot to do with it. instead of using tricks to make it look good while keeping poly count low, they go apeshit on the polygons even for 'clutter' object like rocks and shit. There was a mod project that worked to replace all the high poly crap with low poly stuff that actually looked better. Clever use of textures and bump mapping with good lighting to fool the eye is what you have to do. Yeah their games are good but often get slapped together and needs ridiculous amount sof bugfixes.
i've had the freezing problems on my PS3. Especially if there's alot of action going on constantly it will freeze up on me or on the flipside i'll be running across the desert and it will randomly freeze. It's to be expected of games the size of Fallout and especially if they're the first batch, i got mine at the midnight release. Though i don't believe i've completed the main storyline, i know i've done a good portion of it though. Can be tough to get my gaming in around my house, especially when i have to battle over my tv and playstation with my nephews, the 3 year old wants to watch spongebob, the 12 year old wants to play Modern Warfare 2 and i wanna play NV all at the same time it seems.... the 3 year old usually wins, thanks mom : /
yeah I hear ya I love big screens but sometimes if you want to get your game on and the whiny three old gets his way too much then you get what you can afford. i had the same problem growing up except it was my little sister and no offense to anyone but she was and is a bitch. You could take turns like you're supposed to but she'd scream, cry and carry on and my mother would just make me let her watch whatever she wanted. And to top it off she knew she could manipulate everyone to get her way. And she'd do it too! But I got the last laugh. She's now a high school dropout with four screaming babies, and always broke. Bwahahaha! karma can be such a bitch eh? I got nice things and she got what? Mound of diapers because she was dumb enough to sleep around!
i sense a little family resentment there. I get annoyed with my nephews yes, especially when the 3 year old is playing Skate 2 and winds up in the Playstation online store and buys a couple full games and videos >.>
how he do that? I thought you can password lock that? or had to do something to verify it. I hope at least they're compensating you for him buying games he shouldn't be buying.
You really should fix that, especially if it's gonna cost you a lotta money. Little kids aren't the most considerate especially if they want something.
The transition loading problem seems to mostly be a problem for me when leaving the store in Goodsprings (360), other than that I just get weirdly long loading times once in a while.
Agree completely about the karma, though.
Why the crap do I get good karma for killing Feral Ghouls? They are TRYING to EAT me.
But that's the point!
I mean, if you put a bunch of serial killers and a full SS command in the middle of a zombie infested city, and they had to kill all the zombies to get out, and they did, that wouldn't make them good people.
That'd make them people who wouldn't mind killing zombies to survive, and that applies to pretty much everyone.
Yeah, I really love New Vegas. It feels a bit different, like it was a bit harder when you first start out since most of the good armor and weapons don't really show up. Overall it has to be my top fave.
Bethsta games rock, however Bethsta games always are released with a fuckton of bugs... lol
Will also say Karma is kinda pointless now o.O As being the fact each and every area has it's own feelings of you that arn't to heavly affected by karma.....
And there seam to be a lot less people that respond bassed off Karma and less Karma checks in conversation....
Ive only just started playing it on the pc. and i have noticed already that the Karma thing is just like heh..
Also noticed that the Mags are like a part time buff kinda thing now instead of before where they permently increased your stats.
one thing i am liking tho is the ability to mod your guns. now thats fun.... will be more so when i can find more mods XD
The mountains on the west side of the map suggest to me that they ran outta time of what they were going to put there. That, to me, seems very lazy, but it gives me hope that a future DC will put something in there.
Reputation seems to be bugged for me. I'm accepted with all the good guys... but it seems that I'm still on good grounds with Caesar's Legion... despite murdering half an army of their dudes.
And the bugs... oh the bugs... They have gone slack over that aspect of trying to fix anything, even with half the world cut of because of mountains.
so far it´s a 8.5 to me, there a few nit pick things I don´t like so I can´t give it a 9 or more, but in turn it´s made my old score for Fallout3 drop from a 8.5 to about a 7.
Loving New Vegas myself so far. I love the new workbench and ammo station stuff. I like the weapon repair kit quite a bit, and my new favorite weapon is the Incinerator. x3 Flaming death rained upon my enemies, it's a good thing.
Well written man. I always figure the loading times that were severely long were always because of my broken Hardrive being replaced by a 2GB memory card. But maybe its both. I still manage to play it, but my goodness, I made myself dinner waiting to load the Vegas Strip.
i love new Vegas and i've only ran into one bug didn't know there were any till the patch came that fixed alot of them. the only thing i hate is that they still didn't put a drivable car in the game because waling every gets boring tho i could just turn on fast travel but that's no fun either. there was a car in fallout 2 i see no reason there can't be on now there plently of room to drive around.
I'm still playing through it myself, mostly exploring now and finishing up some other quests before I actually finish the game. So far the only bug I've really encountered is the terrain thing which is quite annoying when my companion keeps trying to attack random cazadors stuck in a rock.
I need to start pumping my energy weapon skill so I can get the laser commander perk. So far my two favorite weapons to use have been the plasma caster and then gobi campaign scout rifle. That rifle just absolutely wrecks everything I come across when I have the ammo for it.
I did run into some glitches in F3 but they were laughable like the sky turning white and such or not being able to see a portion of the field I was on, occaisonally getting stuck, but nothing major... NV seems to have more glitches, Ive gotten stuck a few times in places, I've had enemies just dissapear and my dog float in the sky for a little bit... and not to mention the load times....
I can't give my full opinion in FONV yet myself, since I'm still playing it. But at least now we know that there are some items that were sellable loot before can now be kept for a better use.
I love the Fallout series to give an honest to god review or opinion but I can say that it is buggy.
I've come across a major bug in an unmarked Train Tunnel that causes you to fall through the map and spawn at the other end of the tunnel. As well having a not-so random encounter with old lady Gibson at the back exit of HELIOS One where she and here dogs just appear out of thin air about 5-10 seconds after your character exits the door. The encounter is a glitch due to her action of sitting when appearing and there being a numerous amount of random invisible items on the ground.
I've had a few minor bug issues, one on the quest I Don't Hurt Anymore where Corporal Betsy won't allow the initiation of conversation. Luckily that is the only major glitch that has caused me troubles. So overall, the 360 version is pretty good but like Fallout 3 can be dam full of glitches; especially an non-patched one.
I've experienced the bug where the enemies are halfway in the ground, unable to attack/be attacked, but still able to be locked onto with VATS which can be very irritating when you have a swarm of VERY pissed off giant wasps after you and you keep locking onto a radscorpion that's little more than scenery. Also, I dunno if you've had this glitch yet Fisk, didn't see it mentioned in the link, but I've had it where I'm walking along a cliff edge and all of a sudden my guy JERKS forward about 15ft ahead of where he just was, VERY nearly killing me twice. If you haven't had this glitch yet, here's your forewarning that it does exist.
yep..ran across glitches myself..freezing..game console suddenly restarting itself..
but ya know my only real gripe?
the multitude of different types of ammo.
i know nothing of guns..so that whole make your own ammo thing just confuses the hell out of me.
no matter what weapon i try..i still do very little damage to the critters and people in the Nevada wasteland.
i cannot kill giant wasps..i cannot kill death claws or giant scorpions..the situation is made worse that now the damn things attack in packs.
While I have my own share of glitches, mostly just constant freezing, my load times are good and the nightstalker stuck beneath the railroad tracks is the first I've seen of its kind. IT still sucks how much my game freezes... like, once or twice each session of playing time for me. I typically stop after it freezes on me >.<
My question for you fisk, is, do you like it more than Fallout 3, or at the very least aspects of it?
I got my hands on this game as well ( I totally loved F3 so I wasn't going to skip F:NV ), and i ave to say that i lovedthe new approach as, lke it has been stated , the Vault 101 part was quite boring. It's just like "Go there, do there, blahblahblah" but well this stuff is jut worth CoD-like games, not in F3 but whatever. I liked more htis quite mysterious aproach of te game itself as it gave to the character way more mystery and backthoughts to the player. WHat I also loved is tha the fact that enemies aren't harmonizig their level to yours ( I got owned by some Radscorpions and Deathclaws at my own surprise ) so it makes it more like "I think first and shoot after " than "I kill anything on sight andthen go ahead". Also the hardcore mode is an interesting addition but justl ike it got stated by many players ant testers it's a little more like a nice addon than something that can make the game really hardcore.
Now on the bad points is the bugs thing. I haven't encountered any yet ( and just one in F3 near the robot factory ) but I assume that a bunch of players will have these issues. Also the world is indeed less limitless and quite more walled. The other negative points are the cahracter's expresisions who are quite android-like, and I wished to see this issue fixed. Also the crappy textures are aback and it's a shame ( gah the wall textures just look like someone threw paint at the walls ), but it's the main things I noticed that are bad so far ( I didn't got really far in the game yet, as I play a ton of games lately ).
So well my final note is that F:NV is a quite cool game but that some really annoying bugs and stuff could have been fixed up duringthe development. I was actually wishining to see a chaange of game engine ( For the CryEngine 2 or 3 maybe, I don't really know) that would have enhanced the game experience quite a lot but whatever.
Just like Fisk said "If you liked Fallout 3, you'll like New Vegas" as the games are similar but if you're just jumpinmg in the Fallout saga you might be a little disappointed by it.
I think you were a bit too generous about the loading times, coming from a fellow PS3 user. While some of them aren’t too long, they’re long enough to take you out of the emersion, and unlike Fallout 3, if you return to the previous area you wouldn’t get a loading screen. I guess that’s what you get with a game which has more in it.
Completely agree with the whole mountains things! Took me like 2 bloody hours to navigate round the bloody thing! >.<
The problem I have is it's too much like Fallout 3, so I feel like I've already played it before. I've got to the bit where you "choose your path" but I don't really care anymore.
I'm not lying or exaggerating or "being generous" about load times. I'm accurately conveying my experience, while saying some people have complained about a different experience.

kinda sucks o.o
If your known as being a law abiding goody twoshoes saver of all ect ect ect ect
The powder gangers shouldn't let a despincer of judstice like you just stroll on up and say high... they should be KoS on you!
At the least they should be way more suspicious of you
It usually is done by Publishers in order to gain more people to buy from their company.
Also noticed that the Mags are like a part time buff kinda thing now instead of before where they permently increased your stats.

also....FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BETHESDA/OBSIDIAN, MAKE THE EYE PATCH A LOOTABLE ITEM!
but, i've yet to find one

I'm saddened that you can't break down Powder Mines.
I need to start pumping my energy weapon skill so I can get the laser commander perk. So far my two favorite weapons to use have been the plasma caster and then gobi campaign scout rifle. That rifle just absolutely wrecks everything I come across when I have the ammo for it.
Some enemies also somehow go into the ground as well, like the Bark Scorpion, for instance. So that's a bit of a clipping issue.
I've not had the thing where the texture goes bland but I do find the clipping issues here and there.

I did somehow manage to kill a Bark Scorpion while it was half-way into the ground. Sneak Attack Crit.
but ya know my only real gripe?
the multitude of different types of ammo.

Someone should really introduce Bethesda to QA!
I also thought the Fisto encounter was... interesting. XD
