On the 29th of october, 1923, Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk" (father of the turks), declared the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the declaretion of the Turkish Republic, after four years of waging a (defensive) war against Britain, France, Greece, and Italy. Against the odds, the Turkish army defeated a better equipped, larger opponent, and drove them out.
The Turkish anthem, "Istiklal Marsi" was written in honour of this occasion.
