One Bloody Retrospective
With the (hopeful) conclusion of the Saw franchise this past week, I do believe it's time for a retrospective of one of the best modern horror franchises, and the five great things that made it good.
5. Gore - Sure, haters may say that all the traps are just the writers thinking, "Okay, how do we one-up a kill from the last movie?" but there's no substitute for a good dosage of blood flying everywhere.
4. The Victims - Douchebags all, you want these people to die - preferrably in the aforementioned spectacles of viscera.
3. The Haters - People who hate the series crack me up. They constantly complain that the movies have no plot. That's the point of a good horror movie - to have just enough plot to move the story but not enough to detract from the on-screen mayhem.
2. Jigsaw - Tobin Bell portrays a delightfully twisted and evil man driven to the brink, but desperate to save people in his own twisted way. If you can appreciate that, then Jigsaw definitely belongs with Freddy and Jason in the annals of horror history.
1. "Hello Zepp" - this little three minute composition makes the franchise. Whenever you heard that telltale piano riff, you know shit is about to hit the fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhSHXGM7kgE
My dad grew up with Friday and Nightmare on Elm Street. I grew up with Saw, and they'll be the films I keep coming back to for a good scare.
