Sonadow fanfic drinking game
Just a silly thing I put together to clear my head. I don't recommend doing this at home or anywhere else.
Mind that I don't find all these tropes to be inherently bad (though some make me stop reading) - they're just awfully common in Sonadow fics for some reason.
You know drinking games. Get some alcoholic beverage, put it in a large container, and for each point on the list that you find reflected in a randomly chosen fic, you drink. To do so is your own decision and I highly recommend Mountain Dew instead. :B
Take a swig if:
Sonic begs Shadow to do something/ stop doing something.
Eyes are likened to gemstones.
The words azure, ebony and /or crimson are used to describe someone.
Bonus if combined with creature.
There's a scene involving water, and Sonic is either drowning in it or being rattled near it. If it's the latter, Shadow is amused by it.
Either guy consistently calls the other "faker", to the point that it's used in place of a name.
Bonus if it's Shadow doing it to be aloof, and Sonic actually lets it get to him.
Sonic is cheeky and persistent, and Shadow is reserved.
Sonic is inexperienced (at least with guys) and easily flustered, and Shadow is persistent.
Sonic is hung up on things like your sacred first kiss, and Shadow isn't.
Sonic jumps back in fear every time Shadow gets ticked off. And still keeps ticking him off.
Blush. Nuclear powered. Bonus if it's Shadow.
Sonic is idealistic, innocent and easily moved.
Shadow is cynical, dirty minded and emotionally cold.
Sonic bottoms.
Sonic makes you think of Amy. (Clingy, one-track, jealous, pouts, prone to emotional outbursts, and on the plus side nurturing, giggly, energetic and forgiving, with a cute smile.)
Sonic has "informed confidence" - his cocky attitude is only mentioned when Shadow makes it fly out the window.
Sonic is repeatedly referred to as "the hero" but never actually does any heroics.
Bonus if his only heroic deed is sacrificing himself for Shadow in some way.
Sonic doesn't do any exploring, DJ sessions, break dancing, traveling or competing, but is satisfied curled up to Shadow's chest, indoors, through the whole story. And is frustrated when Shadow finds something else to do than seeing him.
Shadow doesn't do any thinking on his identity and place in the world, any missions for GUN, or any searching for answers of his own, because he's busy trying to nail Sonic /cater to Sonic's overemotional, spoiled self 24/7.
Sonic and /or Shadow turn on the waterworks at the drop of a hat.
Sonic goes through the whole Shoujo range of emotions, and Shadow is always either pissed off, aloof or horny.
Bonus if his default setting is a combination of the three.
Sonic's prettiness is described at length. Words like "slender" and "graceful" figure.
Bonus if Shadow gets no description save expressions.
Amy Rose (alt: Sally Acorn) is ignored as anything but a minor or major annoyance, and slips out of the story once Sonic and Shadow's relationship kicks off.
Bonus if she goes ballistic on them.
Other parts of their respective friend circle mysteriously turn into full tilt homophobes with no shades of gray (or personality) whatsoever.
Maria is only mentioned when Shadow needs to angst, break into a fit of rage, or cry. The only scenes you see of them are the one under a tree, the one by the lookout window, or the one where she dies. God forbid the girl ever had breakfast.
Somewhere in the story, someone gets raped and /or abused.
The fic is played out in a high school.
Sonic and /or Shadow is a vampire.
If the two previous posts are combined, chug the container's contents and refill.

...Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.
I remember reading it. XD But you're a guy. Most Sonadow writers are chicks. ;)
I want to read yours again and try to say something - the sex scene becomes a bit detached from the rest for me, but I liked it. You have some great mood going in the start. I loves me some denial. (one of the few Sonadow fics I do like, I think maybe I like three or four out of the flood of fics out there...)
It's got a bit more dramatic tone than my stuff, but it doesn't quite cross over into "purple prose" territory, and I can go with your description of Sonic, too (especially if you're looking to the Archie version) since I see a cocky thrill seeker aspect to him that might get him killed one day.
That doesn't mean he doesn't have soft sides or a big heart (I love how he just stays cool and realized - at least on an instinct level - what's going on with Shadow in your short there), but whenever people depict him as friggin' Sailor Moon, they lose me.
Let's say your image is different from mine, but it resonates with it. Also was nice fuel for me because it helps me take a more visual /action oriented angle to my writing of sex scenes (I'm not too focused on visual aspects in sex scenes and I get the impression that guys are, so I might want to think of that when writing). I'm pretty focused on reactions /emotional charge and such, and less on physical aspects. This may have something to do with not really being attracted to guys XD Bit of a handicap there.
A lot of my stuff tends to draw in a lot of the dramatic flair, because I love characterization and depth, but I try not to get overly wordy or verbose when it comes to slash stuff, cause well, eventually it's gotta get down to the lovin at the end. XD
My version of Sonic is a strange one, and one I"m glad you enjoy, I kinda took all the things I like about him, the ego, the thrill seeker, and hero, and kinda blended them with my own personal taste. I see him as kinda spoiled and self-centered, but over all good of heart and out for the best interest of everyone, despite his own selfish desires.
If I ever depict him as Sailor Moon, ( A show that I have to admit, I secretly like) I'd rather hang up my pen and just call it quits. XD
Hehe, I do try to focus on the visual, but I also try to incorporate the emotional aspect, however, You are right in that, as a guy the physical/visual is in the front of my mind. And it doesn't help I'm really into the guy/guy stuff. ^^
I'm sure you'll see that when my next slash fic goes up. Maybe it'll fit your taste^^ It's Blaze/Vanilla. XD
I am too scatter brained to review things right now, but yes, it is definitely one of those I enjoy :)
I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan. I just don't think Sailor Moon = Sonic. I even wrote some fan fiction on SM once... Long ago. Heh.
Getting down to the lovin' takes a while in my current Sonic x Shadow project, I'm afraid. In that respect, it fails as a slash fic. :P (it does come, have no fear, but it might take a couple hundred pages, that's all.)
I like to think Sonic is really sincere in most of what he does, and he does feel deeply for some people, he's just got a slim box of tools to express it with, so plain action is the one most often picked up. I mean, he might cross the line with being rude or thoughtless, but you can count on him to be there when you need him.
Blaze /Vanilla is an interesting one, planned in one of my comics actually :p Be fun to see what you make of it! Oddly enough I haven't written much girl x girl stuff yet... I guess I always got captured by the guy characters.
Writing for the other gender is always tricky. It's not just the whole anatomy thing (female arousal feels different, for instance) but how characters would act...
I find myself crippled when writing sex scenes for guys, because let's face it, can't check with myself... I have to guess a lot. (on that note, should I ever describe anything that's anatomically impossible or just really unlikely to happen, I appreciate being told about it. >_>)
I am trying to remember the visual when I write now (not just sex, but other interaction too) while still sticking to my "mainline" so to speak. I leave a lot up to the reader in terms of detail, but I like to give leading details, if you get my drift.
I also, Have to completely agree with your assessment on Sonic^^
For you have brought us that which is awesome...
Bear in mind that almost all I know about Sonic comes from either you or
Tomo would play Sonic. Horribly impulsive, enormously self-centred, born entirely without brakes (to steal a phrase from Joanna Lumley), she would insist on being the lead character and does resemble him to some extent...
Sakaki is the reason why I thought of this. Unless I've misinterpreted what I've heard, Sakaki's character is much like Mighty's: shy, generally caring, and not quite comprehending her own strength. Sakaki's image, however, is tough, aloof, and generally menacing and, for that reason, Tomo would cajole Sakaki to play Shadow.
Kaorin would, of course, be Amy, played very much with ShadAmy in mind.
Chiyo would be Tails, the young, naive genius.
Tomo is horrible enough to suggest that Yomi play Dr. Eggman, but Yomi would play Knuckles instead, and use hers on Tomo.
...and here I hit a snag. Osaka would probably volunteer to play Luigi only to be told that Luigi isn't in Sonic. She might then offer to play Plantman... and probably be brought in as Cosmo after figuring that's close enough to Plantman.
Bigger snag: Kagura. Kagura is actually closer to being Sonic than Tomo is, since she actually cares about what's going on and will do something about it, but Tomo would have already taken that role. She's also too much of a tomboy to want to be Sally Acorn. Who would Kagura be?
Or possibly Wave; she seems more competitive. But competitive =/= tomboy, to me.
But Sally is a tomboy in that she's tough, takes command and doesn't seem to bother about "staying girly".
