Honestly I see more mutts than really precise Jackals on here. It's a nice change.

But I say you should do what feels more comfortable. If it makes you feel better to be one or the other, then do it. 'S what I did with my fursona when I was changing her around a bit. And I feel so much happier with her now.

Why not just make it a jackal cross? You don't have to change the entire species if you want to add or change markings, some exceptional things happen in real life too. If it fits into a backhistory then why not work it in? :)

If you're being true to nature in regards to a jackal-hybrid, there are genetic restrictions on what can breed with what. But in the furry world, you can be a jackal/dolphin and no one will bat an eye. XD (I drew a bat/dolphin once. :x)
There's a lot more flexibility with looks if you go with a mutt/pariah dog, and a lot of them look wild-doggish, dingoish ('cept for the curly tail), so maybe you should go that route. You can keep the overall look and play with stuff more freely that way.
You tend to draw Champ with a much thicker muzzle than a jackal, so that could work out well.

Yeah I tend to draw him looking more like a mutt dog of sorts anyway, so that's why I was pondering this.

Why not make him albino with hair dye? Then you can be a sexy jackal and STILL have a believably reason for awesome markings.
