I've been seeing a lot of hybrids, in both artwork and stories and I've been wondering what hybrids are possible and what one are impossible, especially when it comes to anthropomorphic characters.
For instance would a wolf be able to crossbreed with a fox? A hyena with a dog? A tiger with a wolverine? Or can anthros crossbreed with humans?
I'd like examples of both real world crossbreeds, and fictional, I know a few that are possible, and impossible, but not all.
Possible Crossbreeds that I know of that are still fertile:
Dog + wolf
Tiger + Lion (aka Tigon, or Liger)
Possible Crossbreeds that are infertile:
Horse + Donkey (Mule)
Impossible Crossbreeds:
Tiger + Skunk (Famous example: ZigZag)
Cat + Wolf
Rabbit + Deer
Please provide your answers and examples, I'd like to hear them.

All dogs derive from the wolf so that's very possible. A fox is in the canine family, but it has its own genus and so cannot cross. (thank God - no offense meant to the Wolfs mind you)
Animals and people... it does happen but without results.

As for me, I resolve the interfertility matter by having my furries set up in two different classes: Typical Carnivores and Omnivores having 50 chromosomes each; Typcial Herbivores having 56 each. Fishes, birds and insects are not anthro, but are sentient. All capable of doing what humans can do, and then some.
Also, it seems like

Though, I've wondered how you've reconciled Iris together with the fact that female hyenas have a pseudo-penis =x
As for Iris... I have no idea,on that one,I might just say the anthro versions don't in my world, but Imight wind up with people who will agrue that fact, especialy with sexual interaction with Kinse and Night (chapter six) and future interactions between Gren and Iris.
To be honest, I never gave it any real thought, but yes, that'd be my assumption, given that I'd think there has to be more of a human DNA basis to allow for any kind of reproduction. (And even then I knew I was stretching believability!)
I have to admit, I much prefer stories where the hybrids are either possible (as with compatible species) or conjecturally possible (as with genetically engineered anthros)... Stories where characters are breeding left and right into ridiculous combinations lose me pretty fast, unless they're supposed to be comedy or something -- it just feels amateurish.

*shrug* She would just have an enlarged clitoris, I would think.
I feel the same way. That's why I have 50 or 56 karotypes. When I was doing extensive RP, I devised a fertility formula too. It's based on human and animal gestations, though it's a touch complicated. I'll share it if people are interested.

That's what I would do, but the range of portrayal I've seen varies far and wide *shifty eyes*
You got my attention.
XD
Though your character is a roo/fox isn't she?
Leopolf=Leopard+Wolf Impossible
Horse+Tiger+Lion=Higer (Lady Liberty)
Figured, any feline/canine cross would be.
Really? Your Lady Liberty is a three part mix? Interesting.
There's also the Savannah Cat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_cat which is housecats mixed with Servals.
And thanks for featuring me. I'm really flattered! :)
And you're quite welcome.
Also, I remember hearing somewhere (a long time ago, so it's plenty of time to have it mixed up!) that you call it either a tigon or a liger based on which cat was the father (that comes first) -- so a tigon was a male tiger mated with a lioness, and so on.
As far as anthros crossbreeding with humans, that's going to depend on the world the author creates, and whether that allows for believability. If, for example, the anthros are aliens, crossbreeding would likely be impossible. If they evolved alongside humans, it might be possible. If they exist because of magic, or if they were scientifically created, all bets are off -- it can go either way depending on where the author wants to take the story. Also consider not just genetic possibility, but the social aspects as well -- after all, humans of different races/ethnicities/religious backgrounds have always been biologically compatible, but many are still reluctant to intermarry because of social differences, prejudices, cultures, fear of stupid bigots, etc. Aspects like that can play more of a role than biology in terms of whether or not crossbreeding ever actually takes place.
if they were scientifically created, all bets are off.
What about your story Susan's Ark? Aren't the characters there created scientifically? (Specifically through genetic engineering of humans?)
(And, by "all bets are off," I meant, there's no obvious certain answer. Probably should have picked a different phrase.)
